Cantwell named Max Preps national male athlete of the year

NIXA, Mo–Nixa Eagle and future Miami Hurricane offensive tackle Jackson Cantwell was named the Max Preps male athlete of the year. Cantwell is the number one football recruit in the country for the class of 2026. And last month he committed to play for the Miami Hurricanes. Cantwell also won the state discus and shot put competition last weekend in Jefferson City. Jackson Cantwell picked Miami because he feels that the Hurricane coaching staff can prepare him for the next level, the National Football League. In his social media account, the 6-foot-8 junior said he was blessed and humbled by this award. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Nation's No. 1 Player Calls Out ‘False Narrative' After Miami Commitment

Class of 2026 five-star offensive tackle Jackson Cantwell is headed to Miami after committing to the Hurricanes over Georgia, Oregon and Ohio State on Tuesday. Cantwell (6-foot-7.5, 300 pounds) ranks as the nation's No. 1 player by both On3 and Rivals. He plays for Nixa (Missouri) High School, where he earned Gatorade Player of the Year honors in December. Advertisement The anticipation surrounding Cantwell's decision began to heat up in recent weeks, with the consensus belief, according to industry experts, that the elite tackle would end up at Georgia. Miami, however, wasn't counted out of the race. Head coach Mario Cristobal's Hurricanes reportedly offered Cantwell the most lucrative NIL package worth around $2 million, according to On3's Pete Nakos last week. "Sources have said that Miami has the most lucrative first-year deal on the table, sitting around the $2 million mark," Nakos wrote on May 7. After announcing his pledge to Miami, Cantwell spoke with reporters and called out the "false narrative" that money was a factor in his decision. Nixa High School offensive tackle and Miami Hurricanes commit Jackson Papes/Springfield News-Leader / USA TODAY NETWORK "Well, I think my response to it is that it's not the same narrative that people like Pete Nakos are pushing right now," Cantwell said via Dawgnation. "I think there's just a false narrative that that's why I'm choosing (Miami)." Advertisement Leading up to his commitment, Cantwell revealed that Miami was recruiting him the "hardest,"and the potential development he could receive under Cristobal and offensive line coach Alex Mirabal was a key factor. Cantwell doubled-down on that belief when sharing his insight on Tuesday. "I think relationships won out with Miami," he said. "That's what kind of did it for me. They spent the most time with me – they put the most effort into recruiting me." When pressed again on the NIL situation, Cantwell pushed back on the narrative that Miami went above and beyond with its offer and acknowledge that his agent Drew Rosenhaus has been responsible in negotiating for fair compensation from each of his top schools. Advertisement "I've got a lot of skin in the game with all these schools, as far as getting represented by Drew and making sure that I'm going to be fairly compensated," he said. "And I think that every school has done a good job with being accommodating to that, and I think that anyone that would say otherwise of how I've done my recruitment has been misled." No. 1 College Football Recruit Sends Clear Message After Declining Georgia

Jackson Cantwell, the nation's No. 1 overall recruit for the Class of 2026, surprised many on Tuesday when he announced his commitment to the University of Miami. In the process, he spurned heavy favorites Georgia and Oregon for what he described as 'the best situation for me to grow and develop, not only on the field as an offensive lineman but as a person'. Advertisement On3's Hayes Fawcett also noted how Cantwell credited head coach Mario Cristobal and offensive line guru Alex Mirabal, whom he called the best developer of offensive linemen in college football, as the driving force behind his decision. Standing at 6-foot-8 in and weighing in around 315 pounds, Cantwell has dominated both the football field and the shot-put circle at Nixa High School in Missouri. In 2024, he set a national sophomore record with a 74.975-ft throw and earned Gatorade Missouri Player of the Year honors in both football and track & field. Rated a five-star by On3, 247Sports, and Rivals, and even carrying On3's highest 'Plus+' designation, Cantwell was the most coveted lineman in the country. Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart.© John David Mercer-Imagn Images Miami, which finished the 2024 season 10-3 under Cristobal, saw its campaign end in heartbreak fashion with a 42-41 loss to No. 18 Iowa State in the Pop-Tarts Bowl. Advertisement Despite that setback, the Hurricanes climbed as high as No. 4 in the polls during the regular season behind Heisman finalist quarterback Cam Ward. Cantwell's commitment marks a seismic shift in the college football landscape, signaling that Miami is back in the national title conversation. Sting Factor: Georgia, Oregon, Ohio State regroup after Cantwell decision

Five-star offensive tackle and No. 1 overall prospect Jackson Cantwell committed to Miami over Georgia, Oregon and Ohio State on Tuesday. Here is a look at the sting factor on a scale of 1-10 for the three programs that didn't land Cantwell. MORE CANTWELL: Miami pulls off a stunner | How often do No. 1 prospects flip from their original commitment? | coverage MORE GORNEY: Recruiting Rumor Mill | Commitment predictions for five-stars CLASS OF 2025 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State CLASS OF 2026 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State CLASS OF 2027 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State TRANSFER PORTAL: Full coverage | Player ranking | Team ranking | Transfer search | Transfer Tracker Cantwell took his sixth visit to Georgia over the weekend and the feeling was very much that he was crossing the Ts and dotting the Is on his commitment to the Bulldogs, not searching for answers to questions. Coming out of the weekend, the feeling was very strong in Athens that the Bulldogs were way ahead in his recruitment. But so often in recruiting, those final hours before a decision are the most important as Miami won out for his services. Cantwell loved coach Mario Cristobal and position coach Alex Mirabal and felt very close to those guys, a crucial part to the Hurricanes winning out here. A fat NIL is reportedly in place, too, and that can't hurt. Georgia has not ponied up the big bucks like some other programs have in NIL as coach Kirby Smart has leaned on his massive success, national championships and NFL development to curry favor in recruiting. One wonders if this situation makes him rethink that strategy or just get more fed up with the current model. Sting Factor: 9 SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH GEORGIA FANS AT There is always going to be some serious intrigue between the top players in the country and Ohio State, especially coming off a national championship, and while Cantwell was interested in the Buckeyes it never seemed to get to that serious of a level. The Nixa, Mo., standout had a good relationship with former position coach Justin Frye and only met new OL coach Tyler Bowen once. It went well but there were better relationships established across the country. Ohio State has commitments from four-star in-state standouts Sam Greer and Maxwell Riley and went to Arizona for high three-star Tucker Smith. The Buckeyes will be just fine. Sting Factor: 4 SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH OHIO STATE FANS AT Only a few weeks ago there was some speculation that Oregon could land five-star offensive tackle Immanuel Iheanacho and Cantwell, and have bookend stars in the coming years. Iheanacho is still very much in the picture for the Ducks and that can soothe a lot of issues as the North Bethesda (Md.) Georgetown Prep standout could make an argument for the No. 1 offensive tackle spot in this class when all is said and done. But it's been a surprisingly rough few weeks for the Ducks, who are not used to losing any recruiting battles. Five-star quarterback Jared Curtis picked Georgia. Four-star receiver Kayden Dixon-Wyatt picked Ohio State. Four-star Kodi Greene flipped to Washington. Even five-star defensive end Richard Wesley, who committed over the weekend, didn't tell his family it was happening and other visits are still being planned. Oregon needed to land Cantwell since the Ducks can sell the football aspect but also the track considerations in the area and the Nike connections. But it didn't fall into place in the end.
