McVeigh stars as Boomers prove too strong for Koreans

New coach, new captain, new squad, no problem. Australia have preserved their unbeaten record in the Asian Cup with a resounding 97-61 win over South Korea to begin their 2025 title defence in promising fashion in Jeddah. A new dawn beckoned at the King Abdullah Stadium under Boomers mentor Adam Caporn, the former assistant to Brian Goorjian who led the team at the Paris Olympics. Australia have never been beaten in the competition since their inclusion in 2017, so all eyes were on Caporn and his young brigade with an average age of just 24. There was plenty to like in Caporn's first match in charge as the reigning champions sent an ominous message to their Asian Cup rivals. Tough defence and impressive three-point shooting were the cornerstone of a convincing victory. Player of-the-match Jack McVeigh led the scoring with 20 points, with contributions also from Jaylin Galloway (12) and William "Davo" Hickey (11). Captained by Will Magnay, the Boomers' early aggression caught the Koreans napping with Xavier Cookes landing the first basket in the opening seconds. Then moments later Galloway added the first three-pointer to signal Australians intent with the shell-shocked Koreans forced into taking an early timeout with the score just 7-0. But it helped the Asians regroup with former Illawarra Hawks wing Hjungjung Lee leading their fight back. Lee (20 points) was a constant threat as they ended the first quarter eight behind with the score 25-17. But it was the second quarter that would have pleased Caporn as his charges took control of the contest. The Boomers opened up a match-defining 17-point gap to lead 48-31, the margin largely constructed by resilient defence and brilliant three-point shooting from McVeigh. McVeigh, who had 15 points alone in the first half, found his range from outside the circle as Australia were white hot (62 per cent) from the three-point line as opposed to the Koreans' four from 19 attempts in the first half. The Boomers' athleticism eventually wore down South Korea and entered the final quarter 68-47 in front. For good measure, Caporn then threw on 17-year-old rising star Dash Daniels, the younger brother of NBA star Dyson. It was a glimpse into the future as Australia build towards the 2027 World Cup in Jeddah and 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the youngster didn't disappoint. Next up for the Boomers is Lebanon on Saturday at 1pm (AEST). BOOMERS' REMAINING ASIAN CUP POOL FIXTURES: v Lebanon, Saturday 1am (AEST) v Qatar, Sunday 6pm (AEST)

Youthful Boomers add Dash and dare for Asia Cup defence

Dash Daniels will become the youngest Boomer since Ben Simmons and won't be alone in pressing his case for bigger things when Australia put an unbeaten Asia Cup record on the line. Australia begin their campaign in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Wednesday against South Korea as two-time defending champions, 12-0 at the tournament since the Oceania powerhouse was granted entry in 2017. The spectacle has become a tool for Basketball Australia to blood youth and develop leadership in more established players, with the 2027 World Cup and 2028 Los Angeles Olympics firmly in mind. New coach Adam Caporn has handed Paris Olympian Will Magnay the captaincy, while Jack McVeigh, Jack White and Xavier Cooks are the only other players in their late 20s. Daniels, the 17-year-old brother of NBA talent Dyson, will be the youngest Boomer since 17-year-old Simmons debuted against New Zealand in 2013. US college forward Harry Wessels and highly rated college graduate Reyne Smith, who has signed with Cairns for the next NBL season, all bring down the average age. Ben Henshall, 21, will also play after opting out of the NBA draft and re-signing with Perth. Long-time Boomers assistant Caporn, currently on the Washington Wizards' staff, will lead the team in a tournament for the first time since taking over from Brian Goorjian. Goorjian took the team to bronze at the Tokyo Games and was in charge at last year's Paris Olympics, the Boomers crawling out of a tough pool before losing in overtime to Serbia in the quarter-finals. "There's a lot of value in the Asia Cup; it's a chance to prove you belong at a level like this, opportunity for those young guys and role players to carve out and define what they can bring to a higher-level team we'd bring to a World Cup," said Magnay, who has rekindled his career with Tasmania. "I want to push this program forward to achieve the highest highs. "However we have to do that ... if that's me stepping up and doing more, then yes. "If it's taking more of a back seat, being a bench dude, then yes. "I just want this program to continue to move forward." Caporn brought in Boomers great and new Sydney Kings assistant coach Andrew Bogut as an adviser for the side's Gold Coast camp, where Josh Giddey, Matthew Dellavedova, Johnny Furphy and Dyson Daniels all participated. Guard Sean MacDonald (knee) was a casualty in their only pre-tournament game, with forward Josh Bannan elevated in his absence. Former Illawarra Hawks wing Hyunjung Lee is one of South Korea's key men, while Saturday morning's pool clash with Lebanon will be a replay of the 2022 decider, won 75-73 by the Boomers. Caporn to begin Boomers reign with college warm-up

Adam Caporn's reign as Boomers head coach will begin when the side tunes up for the Asia Cup against the University of Colorado on the Gold Coast. The low-key July 31 contest comes before Australia aim for an Asia Cup three-peat in Saudi Arabia from August 5-17. It will be Caporn's first games in charge since taking over from Brian Goorjian, who stood down after last year's Paris Olympics. "I couldn't be more excited to return to Australia and get on the floor with the group," Caporn said. "I see the Asia Cup as a critical first step in building our system and re-establishing the Boomers' culture." Caporn was on Goorjian's staff and is currently an assistant at the Washington Wizards. The Boomers' Asian Cup squads are traditionally made up of NBL, Asian and European-based players and do not feature any of the country's NBA talent. Thon Maker was the star when the Boomers beat Lebanon in Jakarta in 2022 to defend their title. Washington Wizards assistant Caporn hired as Australia's men's basketball coach

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — Washington Wizards assistant Adam Caporn will take hemisphere-hopping to a new level after being hired as head coach of the Australian men's basketball team. Basketball Australia on Thursday said Caporn would continue his coaching duties with the NBA's Wizards and that Dean Vickerman of the National Basketball League's Melbourne United has been appointed to a new role as Boomers associate head coach. Vickerman will take over the head coaching responsibilities if there's a clash with Caporn's NBA schedule. The 42-year-old Western Australia-born Caporn was head coach of Basketball Australia's center of excellence at the Australian Institute of Sport from 2014-21 and has also worked in the U.S. as head coach of the G-League's Long Island Nets and as an assistant at the NBA's Brooklyn Nets. Caporn also was formerly a coach at St. Mary's College in California. Caporn worked under previous Boomers coaches Andrej Lemanis and Brian Goorjian at the last four major tournaments, helping Australia to an Olympic bronze medal in Tokyo in 2021. Australia lost in overtime to Serbia in the quarterfinals at the Paris Games last year and Goorjian left the national team soon after. 'It is an incredible honor to be part of the Boomers program. To step into the role of head coach is truly a dream come true,' Caporn said in a statement. 'I want to extend a special thankyou to Andrej Lemanis and Brian Goorjian for bringing me into the Boomers coaching staff — your mentorship and contributions to this program have been truly inspiring." Australia also has a similar setup with its national women's coach, Sandy Brondello. Last month, Basketball Australia said Brondello would continue as coach of the Opals until the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles, extending her involvement with the national women's team to a seventh Olympics. Brondello, who guided the Opals to an Olympic bronze medal in Paris last year, helped the New York Liberty win the WNBA title in October. Basketball Australia also hired an associate head coach to lead the program while Brondello has WNBA commitments in New York. Basketball Australia said it conducted an extensive selection process over the last six months before hiring Caporn, consulting with a panel of specialists that included former NBA star and Boomers player Andrew Bogut. On Wednesday, Bogut was appointed as an assistant to Goojian, who now coaches the Sydney Kings in Australia's NBL. ___ AP sports: Dennis Passa, The Associated Press
