Target expands same-day delivery to 100s of retailers

What's your favorite thing about large supermarkets and grocery chains? One of the reasons large retail chains are so popular, besides the obvious (many offerings at one place, affordable prices, etc.), is their continued focus on customer satisfaction. Today's competition in the retail industry is fierce. Businesses are also facing challenges such as a post-pandemic economic climate and rising inflation, among others. To stay competitive, retailers must innovate with their offerings and promotions while maintaining consistent quality. Do all this, and customer loyalty grows. Related: Walmart issues urgent message about the alarming cost of food Target (TGT) , the seventh-largest retailer in the United States and a component of the S&P 500 Index, frequently upgrades its offerings. In March 2024, the retail chain launched "Express Self-Checkout" across close to 2,000 stores. It set up a strict 10-item or fewer limit to make the lines quicker. With this faster self-checkout system, Target addressed one of the issues consumers hate the most: long frustrating lines. Fast forward to one year later. The strategy proved successful, with overall transaction times across both staffed and self-checkout lanes improving by almost 8%. What's more, customers begin to report a better overall experience. Target's Net Promoter Score for wait times increased by 5 points, and its score for team member interactions jumped by 3 points. Now, Target has another surprise for loyal customers. Image source: Universal Images Group via Getty Images The retail giant revealed on May 19 that it is removing price markups on same-day delivery from over 100 popular retailers and grocers outside of Target. While same-day delivery from Target has always been free from price markups, this upgrade will also make same-day delivery from many more retailers more affordable. "From the start, Target Circle 360 has been about building strong relationships with our guests and growing with them to deliver more value and ease. We've never charged markups on same-day delivery from Target, and now Target Circle 360 members can exclusively enjoy this no-markup benefit from more than 100 retailers and grocers across Shipt's network, too," stated Cara Sylvester, Target executive vice president and chief guest experience officer. "We've built a true digital shopping center experience - making your Saturday errand run easier, faster, and more affordable." More on retail: Popular convenience store makes major expansion in new statesCostco solves key problem for parentsStarbucks faces new threat from China rival set to enter US market Target Circle 360 doesn't limit its members to a single retailer. Rather, it offers them unlimited same-day delivery from Target and Shipt's curated marketplace of over 100 retailers and grocers. These include CVS, Lowe's Home Improvement, PetSmart, Hy-Vee, Giant Eagle, Lowers Foods, and more. The latest upgrade makes Target Circle360 into a digital shopping center. The company estimates that members can save seven hours a month and more than $300 a year on average. Not everything has been running smoothly at one of the biggest retailers in the U.S. Risks emerge with each new decision, and there's no way to be 100% certain how Target's large customer base will react. In 2023, Target saw a huge boycott from consumers over its Pride collection, due to backlash over items marketed toward children. Since then, Target's diversity, equity, and inclusion policies have been under scrutiny, and even its sales have been affected for several quarters. More recently, the retail giant scaled back its DEI initiative, which caused more protests and lower store traffic. Target discontinued its three-year DEI goals and ended programs supporting Black employees and businesses. While CEO Brian Cornell admitted mistakes and tried to assure employees about the company's core values, new boycott threats, most notably from The People's Union USA, are scheduled for June. Target Circle 360 members can now shop same-day delivery with 100+ retailers

This story was originally published on Retail Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Retail Dive newsletter. Target Circle 360 members can now order unlimited same-day delivery 'without price markups' from more than 100 other retailers and grocers in Shipt's network, the company announced Monday. The update is intended to turn the program into a "digital shopping center.' Target Circle 360 (which has a membership price of around $99 annually) and Shipt's marketplace of retailers includes Petco, PetSmart, Lowe's Home Improvement, CVS and more. New signups for Target Circle 360 can get $20 off their first order of at least $75. The deal excludes alcohol purchases. Target Circle 360 members who also shop at places like Giant Eagle, Office Depot and more can now do it all in one place. "We've never charged markups on same-day delivery from Target, and now Target Circle 360 members can exclusively enjoy this no-markup benefit from more than 100 retailers and grocers across Shipt's network, too," Cara Sylvester, executive vice president and chief guest experience officer at Target, said in a statement. "We've built a true digital shopping center experience — making your Saturday errand run easier, faster and more affordable." The expansion of Circle 360's offerings comes a little over a year since the paid membership program launched, an offshoot of the Target Circle free loyalty program. The paid program competes with other store memberships, such as the Walmart+ $98 annual membership and Amazon Prime. The paid membership changes add onto Target's larger strategic shift. Target in March launched its product revamp, which includes a focus on private label brands, with a strategic goal to reach $15 billion in sales growth by 2030. The retailer, for example, announced last week that it would add about 10,000 items to its website and stores through August, specifically for the summer season. The company has struggled with consumer backlash to DEI initiative changes this year and indicated in March that consumer and tariff uncertainties are likely to impact profits in the first quarter. The retailer is expected to report its Q1 results this Wednesday.

Target Circle 360 members can now get lower-priced deliveries. Here's what to know

Target Circle 360 members can now get lower-priced deliveries. Here's what to know Members of Target's paid Target Circle 360 subscription same-day delivery service are getting a new perk: lower-priced deliveries. Subscribers to the Target Circle 360 program ($99 annual fee), which the retailer launched in April 2024, get free unlimited same-day delivery on orders over $35 from Target. However, there were price markups on orders on products from the 100+ Target retail partners delivered through online delivery company Shipt, which Target purchased in 2017. Target announced the removal of same-day delivery price markups on Monday, May 19. That means when there's no markup from the store price when Target Circle 360 members order products from any of the retailers and grocery stores in Target's Shipt network – CVS, PetSmart, Lowe's Home Improvement and local stores such as Hy-Vee and Giant Eagle are among them. The Buc-ee's empire expands: Where is the beloved convenience store opening next? Product price markups vary, but Target says Target Circle 360 members will save nearly $20 per order with this new perk. (Some items from alcohol retailers are exempt from no markups.) 'From the start, Target Circle 360 has been about building strong relationships with our guests and growing with them to deliver more value and ease,' said Cara Sylvester, Target's executive vice president and chief guest experience officer, in a press release. 'We've built a true digital shopping center experience – making your Saturday errand run easier, faster and more affordable." What is Target Circle 360? The subscription delivery service is a competitor to other paid membership programs such as Amazon Prime and those launched by competitors such as Costco, Sam's Club and Walmart – all meant to cater to consumers wanting faster, free deliveries. Target Circle 360 is different from the free-to-join Target Circle loyalty program, which gets you deals and rewards for shopping at Target. Target Circle 360 includes all those features, plus faster same-day deliveries (your order must add up to $35 or more) and free 2-day shipping on many items. Other perks: No-rush returns, early access to deals, and freebies on the first of each month. The cost: $99 per year or $10.99 monthly. If you have a Target Circle credit card, you can get a discounted $49 annual fee for Target Circle 360. New Target Circle members get an additional perk: $20 off their first order of $75 or more from Shipt's network of retailers (one per member; not valid on alcohol purchases). Target unveils genius strategy to boost seasonal sales

Target has experienced a slight slowdown in various areas of its business over the last few quarters, causing net sales to decline by nearly 1% for the full year of fiscal 2024. To keep customers engaged, the retailer is prioritizing newness, increasing product offerings based on customers' needs while continuing to serve as a one-stop shop. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter In an effort to boost sales and gain market share, Target has sealed multiple partnership deals with brands from various sectors, including a collaboration with the fitness company Peloton and a multi-year partnership with the apparel brand Champion. It also increased its Target Plus portfolio to over 1,500 partners and grew its marketplace. With all these changes and improvements, Target aims to drive more than $15 billion in sales growth by 2030, as the company said in an announcement unveiling its multi-year growth strategy. Target (TGT) stated its customers' willingness to spend on newness in its latest earnings call, despite the current softening in consumer spending due to inflation and economic uncertainty. It claims it has seen the highest sales when new seasonal products are released, like during Valentine's Day, which led to record-high sales. "Shoppers turn to Target for the most important seasons and celebrations in their lives - and for all the small moments of discovery and delight that make the everyday extraordinary," said Target's Executive Vice President and Chief Guest Experience Officer Cara Sylvester in a press release. Related: Target makes bold move to answer Walmart, Amazon To continue the seasonal shopping momentum, Target launched its new spring marketing campaign in April, along with the release of various new products, to encourage consumers to shop at Target rather than its rival retailers. As an incentive to all shopaholics, Target is expanding spring and Easter offerings by introducing many trendy products across multiple sectors, including apparel and accessories, home, food and beverage, beauty, and more. The best part is that most items retail for less than $20. Target wants to get customers in a festive mood by transforming its stores into an immersive "garden party" experience with festive spring-themed displays and decorations. It is also revamping its digital e-commerce platforms to channel the "spring bloom" for those who prefer shopping online. "Shoppers continue to seek differentiated options and distinctive shopping experiences without sacrificing value, and Target has the scale, strategy, and capabilities to support all the ways consumers shop and engage with brands," said Target's CEO Brian Cornell in the press release regarding its growth strategy.
