Tasty treats or SAFB game-changer? WF Girl Scouts kick off cookie sales

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — If you head to any major retailer in the coming weeks, chances are, you'll be face-to-face with Girl Scout Cookies once again. These next few weeks are vital for Girl Scouts because the 'Cookie Bucks' raised from each sale propel them closer to their educational and career goals, and for long-time scout Cheran Hooper, it means passing on her decade-long legacy. 'The crunchiness of the Thin Mints is good, but the chewiness of the Caramel Delites you lowkey can't beat,' Cheran said. Cookie season is in full swing, but for her… 'It is so much more than cookie season,' Cheran said. …It presents chances to grow. 'I just start thinking about where cookie money is going to be used, where we're going to go,' she said. 'Anything that would be fun or maybe a new learning experience.' WFHA reopens application portal to help families secure housing 'You are supporting Girl Scout entrepreneurs. You are providing a safe place for them to develop courage and confidence,' Troop #8240 Leader Amy Young said. 'You are funding adventures and experiences like Cheran was able to go to Belize.' It's growth Cheran's mom and troop leader, LaChandra Hooper, has witnessed firsthand. 'When she first came about, she was kind of stuck with her friends,' LaChandra said. 'And then, through Girl Scouts, she has become a friend to strangers, a friend to her classmates, a friend to her peers.' Giving girls like her the chance to teach… 'Whenever I'm training little Brownies or Daisies, I get to help them out with saying, 'Well, what does the customer like?' Cheran said. 'You have to ask them that, and you had to tell them how much change they have.' …And be taught. 'You get the opportunity to meet a lot of professionals like we have pilots, bakers, nurses, doctors,' LaChandra said. 'My other daughter, we were able to go to a salon, and she's now a cosmetologist.' And Troop 8240, an Air Force-centered troop, continues to give our local airmen a sweet boost. 'The girls have donated about a thousand packages of cookies to local airmen on the base just to say thank you for what they do for us because they understand what it means to serve,' Young said. 'These Cookie Bucks are used to help where my father used to help our country. It's just a really fun experience,' Cheran said. 'I love that I'm able to help out through Girl Scouts.' Thanks to Girl Scouts and funding from cookie sales, Cheran has also been able to give back to the community. In November, she implemented her service project, 'Mindful Moment,' at All Hands Center to provide a space where folks can go to clear their heads. Her work garnered the highest award possible, a Gold Award, and a proclamation from Mayor Tim Short. To find your nearest cookie location so you can help fund the missions of girls like Cheran, visit the Girl Scout website. Girl Scout Cookies will be sold at $6 per box until March 2.
