Homestead: 'Big skies, prairie fields and small-town, romantic feel'

The builder group in the community is comprised of Partners Homes, Excel Homes, Genesis Builders Group and Trico Homes. The couple opted to go with Genesis Builders Group after falling for the Caravela model, a 2,210-sq.-ft., two-storey, four-bedroom home with the option for a legal secondary suite in the basement. They also really liked that there was a main floor bedroom and full bathroom option, as the couple's parents visit for several months at a time, and Kaur's mother has mobility challenges. Article content 'It's a perfect floor plan for family to come and visit,' says Kaur, noting that the home's design gave the couple everything that they wanted, including income-generating potential from the lower-level suite. 'It's perfect for us.' Article content With a bright and open floor plan and two living areas on the main floor, along with a large kitchen, the home works well for family get togethers — the couple has a large extended family living in Calgary and is looking forward to having them over to share meals. Article content Article content Kaur's favourite room is the upstairs bonus room. 'I love having that private area where we can watch TV. I don't like to have the TV on the main floor, so this works really well for us.' Article content The process of picking and choosing finishes and options was 'very easy,' says Kaur. 'Everything was done in a day and we got everything that we wanted.' Kaur and her husband went with plenty of stone finishes and a white and grey colour scheme and a Modern Craftsman exterior elevation. Other choices for exteriors include Modern Farmhouse and Modern Prairie. Article content The couple is looking forward to spending time at home when they aren't working, enjoying the tranquility of the community and their new fenced backyard — they plan to create a low-maintenance garden. 'We can see the Rocky Mountains and the Calgary Tower from our bedroom, plus, there is a large greenspace behind us, which is lovely.' Article content Article content The couple is excited to move in. Article content 'We are looking forward to getting into the house and the community. Every day we are commuting from Airdrie and putting the kilometres on the cars and the gas and everything. And the community of Homestead, well, in my opinion, it's the best community,' says Kaur.
