Caribbean police work to ID body found during search for missing American as nearby security guard was killed

A security guard was killed about 9 miles from where an American went missing in the Turks and Caicos Islands in late June, according to police. Brian Tarrence, 51, of Monroe, New York, went missing on June 25 while vacationing with his wife on the Turks and Caicos Island, according to the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force. On the same day, police said a security guard was killed at a supermarket in the Blue Hills area of the Turks and Caicos Islands, roughly 9 miles from where Tarrence went missing. Police haven't established a connection between the two incidents. Grantley Williams, acting superintendent of police for the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force, said in a Facebook video that Tarrence was last seen leaving the Paradise Inn, where the couple was staying in the Grace Bay Area of the island. The Tarrence family's private investigator, Carl DeFazio, previously told Fox News Digital that Brian was seen on security camera leaving their condo before disappearing. Earlier that day, the couple went on a boat trip. "They seemed to be having a normal couple days, and he ended up walking out of his condo, which is in a very safe place and in the middle of Grace Bay Road," DeFazio said. "And we have him on camera, and he walks into town, and then he basically disappears, and we haven't heard from him since." DeFazio said Tarrence's belongings were left behind at the condo, adding that he was wearing a T-shirt, shorts and sneakers. Tarrence's wife didn't realize he was missing until the following morning, DeFazio said. The Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force said a body was found shortly after 9 a.m. Saturday in Grace Bay, but police haven't made an identification. A spokesperson for the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force told Fox News Digital that autopsy results are still pending. "The Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force extends sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased," Acting Commissioner of Police Rodney Adams said while commenting on the discovery of the body. "We urge family members of the public to refrain from speculation and allow the investigative process to confirm the identity through official channels." Tarrence and his wife left for the vacation on June 22 and were set to return on June 29. Anyone with information relating to Tarrence's disappearance is asked to call 911 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Body found amid search for American tourist who vanished while on romantic getaway with his wife

Police officials have discovered a body nearly an hour's walk away from a hotel on the Turks and Caicos Islands where American tourist Brian Tarrence vanished on June 25. Investigators discovered a 'deceased male in a state of decomposition' early Saturday morning, a Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force statement read. His identity has not been released. 'The RTCIPF will provide further updates as soon as the identification process is completed and the next of kin is informed.' Private investigator Carl DeFazio, whom Tarrence's family hired, told People magazine the body was found in a 'little residential-commercial area." DeFazio warned it was too early to speculate the body was Tarrence's, who was last seen leaving a rented apartment at the Paradise Inn in Grace Bay just before 3:40 a.m. Tarrence and his wife arrived on the island on June 21 for what they had intended to be a romantic getaway to celebrate their anniversary. His brother, Mike Tarrence, told The Turks and Caicos Sun that he last heard from his brother via text the day before they traveled. 'They were there to celebrate their one-year anniversary. He just said they were going on vacation. No details were provided to me. This is very personal, but come to find out through all of this, it was discovered he is a very bad alcoholic. We were also told that with either the drinking, lack of sleep, or both, he was experiencing hallucinations,: Mike Tarrence said. 'He has never done anything even remotely close to this. He is a very smart individual,' he added. The message was short and simply said that Tarrence and his wife were heading off on holiday to celebrate their one-year anniversary with no further details. Meanwhile, DeFazio told People, 'You can't just look at, say, a watch, sneakers, and a pair of shorts. Anybody could be wearing that. What if we say, 'Yeah, that's his watch, that's his shorts,' and then find out somebody else had them? And if that were the truth, then this investigation takes a turn tremendously right there.' Acting Police Commissioner Rodney Adams said, 'The Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force extends sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. 'We urge members of the public to refrain from speculation and allow the investigative process to confirm the identity through official channels.' Police appealed to anyone with information to contact 911 or the nearest police station or reach out anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-8477 (TIPS) or by using the P3 mobile app.

Body found amid search for missing American Brian Tarrence in Turks and Caicos

Investigators have made a grim discovery during the search for Brian Tarrence, a New Yorker who disappeared in Turks and Caicos. Tarrence was on vacation with his wife and was last seen on surveillance video walking away from his hotel early in the morning of June 25. Police have been searching for him ever since, and a private investigator was brought on to assist. Saturday morning, the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force again organized a search for Tarrence. A few hours into the search in an area of Grace Bay, they said they found "the body of a deceased male in a decomposed state." They have not yet established, however, if the body is Tarrence's. "We the police extend condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and ask that the public not speculate and await positive identification of the deceased," acting Commissioner Rodney Adams said in a statement. So far, there's nothing to indicate any criminality Carl DeFazio, formerly of the NYPD, was brought on as the private investigator in the case. "If he was robbed, by now I think I would have seen a credit card charge, or found his wallet, or found him, you know," DeFazio told CBS News New York's Tony Aiello earlier this week. DeFazio said there was nothing thus far to point to any criminality in the case.

New York man disappears on vacation with wife in Turks and Caicos

A New York man has gone missing in Turks and Caicos, according to authorities from the Caribbean Island. Brian Tarrence, 51, of New York City, was last seen at the Paradise Inn on June 25, according to a missing persons flyer issued by the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force last week. A private investigator hired by Tarrence's family, which NBC confirmed with his wife, told NBC News that the security footage he viewed showed Tarrence leaving his condo at the Paradise Inn around 4:00 a.m. June 25 and heading toward town in Grace Bay. Tarrence's wife of roughly a year was asleep when he left the condo, according to Carl DeFazio, the private investigator. She told DeFazio that it was unusual for him to be up at that hour. "She went to bed rather early, 7 o'clock," he said. "She got up two times, checked on him. He was watching TV or whatever. And then when she got up at 7:00 am, he was gone." The day prior to Tarrence's disappearance, DeFazio said, the pair went on a boat ride. Tarrence's wife told the private investigator that her husband had been acting 'a little bit different than he normally is,' DeFazio told NBC News, but said it could have been due to dehydration. Local authorities did not respond to NBC News' request for comment. A State Department spokesperson said the agency is "aware of a U.S. citizen missing in Turks and Caicos." "When a U.S. citizen is missing, we work closely with local authorities as they carry out their search efforts, and we make every effort to keep lines of communication open with families as appropriate," the spokesperson said. "The Department of State has no higher priority than the safety and security of U.S. citizens abroad. We stand ready to provide consular assistance to U.S. citizens in need and their families." The private investigator added that Tarrence's wife said his speech was unusual the night before he disappeared. He noted that Tarrence left the condo with his phone and that he has not made any credit card transactions since his disappearance. DeFazio added that the local police department was trying to gain access to Tarrence's phone records, while his sister-in-law and mother looked for him on the island. DeFazio said Tarrence's wife went back to the United States but was expected to return to the island soon. This article was originally published on

An American tourist went on vacation to Turks and Caicos to celebrate his anniversary. Eight days ago he left his Airbnb and hasn't been seen since

An American tourist has vanished after going on vacation in the Bahamas with his wife to celebrate their anniversary. Brian Tarrence was last seen leaving a rented apartment in Turks and Caicos just before 3:40 a.m. on June 25, the local police force said. The New Yorker has not been seen since. Tarrence was staying at the Paradise Inn in Grace Bay, Providenciales, when CCTV footage caught him walking away from the property without any obvious signs of distress, reported the island news outlet Eagle Legal News. The 51 year-old's belongings, including his wallet and phone, have also gone missing and his cell is unreachable, the outlet added. Private investigator Carl DeFazio, who was hired by the Tarrence family, told The Independent he had been working with local police since his unexplained disappearance. DeFazio said he was trying to track Tarrence's credit card and Apple Watch information and anything that could suggest his whereabouts. He added that police and local community had been very cooperative in the investigation, treating it as a high-priority case and that so far there was nothing to suggest foul play. 'They seemed to be having a normal couple of days, and he ended up walking out of his condo, which is in a very safe place and in the middle of Grace Bay Road,' DeFazio told Fox News. 'We have him on camera, and he walks into town, and then he basically disappears, and we haven't heard from him since." DeFazio told Fox Tarrence is a 'smart guy,' adding 'we don't know what's in his mind or if he did this on his own or if somebody took him in." The Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police hunt to find Tarrence, who lives in Manhattan, is now on its eighth day. The missing man's wife is reportedly assisting with the search efforts. The couple had arrived on the island on June 21 for what they had intended to be a relaxing break. Tarrence's brother, Mike Tarrence, told the island outlet The Sun that he last heard from his brother via text the day before they went. He said the message was short and advised that he and his wife were heading off on holiday but with no further details. 'They were there to celebrate their one-year anniversary,' Mike said. 'He just said they were going on vacation.' If anyone has any information on Tarrence's whereabouts, they are urged to contact the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force at 911 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-8477. All calls will be answered by the Miami-Dade Police, and 'no one from RTCIPF will know who called,' adding that the information would be passed on anonymously. Local police advised people not to share information with them via their social media pages.
