Adelaide United appoint Brazilian-born head coach

Brazilian-born Airton Andrioli, who is long renowned in youth soccer circles, has been appointed coach of Adelaide United's A-League Men's team. Andrioli, the man behind the Reds' widely acclaimed youth program, has signed a two-year deal to replace Carl Veart. "I'm incredibly honoured and humbled to be given the opportunity," Andrioli said in a statement on Monday. "This is a very special moment in my life and something I won't take for granted. "My aim is to continue building on the strong foundations laid through our youth programs, providing young South Australians the opportunity to realise their dreams." Before that, he spent a decade as Football South Australia's technical director and played a pivotal role in the state's acclaimed talent pathways. Andrioli, who played for West Adelaide in the National Soccer League (NSL) between 1994 and 1996, also had a stint as assistant coach with the Young Socceroos in 2015/16. United's technical director Ernest Faber said Andrioli was ideally suited to replace Veart, who split with the Reds after a five-year tenure. "Airton knows this club very well," Faber said. "He's the architect of our youth program, which is the lifeblood of Adelaide United and he's already played a significant role in the progress we've made over the past few years. "He'll continue the great work he's been doing, but in a different capacity - backing young players, playing attacking football, and building a strong team culture. "We believe Airton will help us grow steadily while staying true to the identity of Adelaide United." The Reds were tipped from this year's finals with a 3-2 loss to Western United in an elimination final.

Adelaide United appoint Airton Andrioli as replacement for Carl Veart

New Adelaide United coach Airton Andrioli is set to 'honour the legacy' of his predecessor Carl Veart with an attacking brand of football driven by South Australian talent. The Reds on Monday confirmed the appointment of Andrioli, previously an assistant to Veart and head of the club's youth program, on a two-year deal. News Corp Australia revealed on April 10 – the same day that the Reds announced that Veart's contract would not be renewed for next season – that Andrioli was the favourite to be the club's next coach. The 60-year-old Brazilian has strong links with South Australian football. Andrioli played for West Adelaide in the old National Soccer League from 1994 to 1996 and was Football South Australia's technical director from 2010 to 2020 before linking with the Reds. 'I'm incredibly honoured and humbled to be given the opportunity to lead Adelaide United's A-League Men's side,' he said. 'This is a very special moment in my life and something I won't take for granted. 'I've always believed in doing the hard work, especially when no one is watching, and leaving the rest in God's hands. 'To be able to lead the best football club in Australia, at Coopers Stadium – arguably the best football stadium in the country – in front of the most passionate and loyal supporters, is something I can't wait to experience.' Reds technical director Ernest Faber said Andrioli had 'already played a significant role' in the club's recent progress, having helped develop the likes of Nestory Irankunda, Luka Jovanovic, Ethan Alagich Giuseppe Bovalina and Alex Popovic 'Airton knows this club very well,' Faber said. 'He's the architect of our youth program, which is the lifeblood of Adelaide United. 'He'll continue the great work he's been doing but in a different capacity – backing young players, playing attacking football, and building a strong team culture. 'We believe Airton will help us grow steadily while staying true to the identity of Adelaide United.' In a prepared statement, the Reds said Andrioli was 'known for his attacking philosophy' that 'aligns closely' with the club's 'style' of 'fast-paced, direct football with an emphasis on speed, quick transitions, and structured movement'. The club said Andrioli would 'blend' that with 'tactical discipline and the ability to adapt based on each match's demands'. The Reds – who were knocked out in the first week of the A-League finals series earlier this month – also declared that Andrioli was 'determined to honour Carl Veart's legacy while carving his own path forward', and a 'commitment to South Australian talent' would 'remain a cornerstone' of the club's 'football identity'. Andrioli will continue to lead the Reds' youth team in the NPL South Australia competition until the end of next month before the start of the A-League team's pre-season training program on July 1, by which time Andrioli's coaching staff will be confirmed.

Adelaide United keen to reward outgoing coach Carl Veart with an A-League championship

Adelaide United players are intent on winning the A-League title for departing Reds coach Carl Veart. Having profited from Sydney FC's poor finish to the regular season to sneak into the top six, the Reds have a new hunger to defy the odds by staging a memorable finals run, starting with Friday night's elimination affair with Western United at Ironbark Fields. Adding to their motivation is the impending departure of Veart, who was told last month by club officials that his contract would not be renewed for next season. Despite his disappointment, Veart has remained committed to Adelaide's cause, with his selfless and team-first attitude having been appreciated by his players. 'The boys are disappointed (about Veart's exit) because Carl's been there for so long and he's got all of the players' respect because he's a top guy,' Reds defender Panagiotis Kikianis said. 'He's still pushing us and still giving us all the right information. He always wants to win and it drives us even harder knowing we have a coach who really wants to win. 'Especially in his last season, we want to do this extra for him.' Veart urged his players to win the title for themselves. 'My focus is always doing what's best for the club, and that won't change,' the former Socceroos striker said. 'The players have their own motivations too, and they know what's at stake. 'I don't think I've got anything to prove. I've always just tried to do my best for the club. 'We've had good seasons, we've played finals regularly, and now we want to go out and hopefully win some silverware this year.' To achieve that, the Reds will almost certainly need to improve defensively after conceding 55 goals in 26 regular season games. Only wooden spooners Perth Glory (56) conceded more. 'You can't hide from it,' Kikianis said. 'I don't take it personally. We know what we need to get getter at. 'There are moments when it's individual things but also, you defend with 11 and attack with 11. The back four gets a lot of the blame, which is fine but people should also understand that there are 11 players on the pitch. 'We're an attacking side, we want to score goals, and the A-League is very transitional, so sometimes you'll get caught but most of the times we score more than our opponent.' While scoring hasn't been a problem for Adelaide this season, the Reds will need to win on Friday night without the services of the A-League's joint Golden Boot winner Archie Goodwin, who is sidelined with a hamstring injury His place in attack will go to Australian under-20 representative Luka Jovanovic. 'Luka works extremely hard. He's a very good striker, one of the best finishers I've seen,' Kikianis said.

Adelaide United coach Carl Veart says Reds have earnt their place in A-League's top 6

Adelaide United coach Carl Veart is adamant the Reds are deserving of their place in the A-League finals series despite having needed a Sydney FC meltdown to secure a top-six berth. Having had the weekend bye, the Reds' final game of the regular season was on April 26 when they drew 0-0 with Melbourne City at AAMI Park. The point was enough to lift them into sixth spot ahead of the Sky Blues. However, due to a superior goal difference, Sydney only needed a draw from one of its final two games, which were both played after the City-Adelaide draw. With their finals destiny out of their hands, the Reds could only wait and hope that the Sky Blues lost both of their remaining games. And Adelaide's prayers were answered, with Sydney losing 1-0 to Western United and 5-1 to Melbourne City to remain stuck in seventh place on 37 points, one adrift of the Reds. Despite his side having needed to ultimately rely on other results to confirm its finals place, Veart denied that luck had played a role in Adelaide securing sixth spot. 'We're there because we deserve to be there,' Veart said on Monday. 'We were in the top six for most of the season and only spent two or three weeks outside of it, so it's something that we've earned.' The Reds were in first place on the ladder after round 15, but a severe form slump resulted in them tumbling down the table. Adelaide secured only seven points from a possible 33 in its final 11 of games of the regular season. However, Veart – whose Adelaide coaching tenure won't extend beyond this season – is confident his team can find form in the playoffs, which begin on Friday night when the Reds take on Western United in an elimination finals clash at Ironbark Fields. 'We worked extremely hard and we know our best is good enough to beat any team in this competition,' he said. The Reds' most recent visit to Ironbark Fields was one to forget, with Western United cruising to a 3-0 win on February 23. 'They're a very good team but the last time we played them we had five or six players out, so you can't take too much from that game,' Veart said. While Adelaide will field a much stronger outfit on Friday night, the Reds will be without joint Golden Boot winner Archie Goodwin, who is sidelined with a hamstring injury. It means that Australian under-20 representative striker Luka Jovanovic will lead the Reds' forward line. 'Luka has to step up. He's got the quality to do the job,' Veart said. The departing Reds coach – whose expected replacement next season will be Adelaide assistant Airton Andrioli – said he wasn't thinking about his future plans and was focused on Friday night's task.
