Businesses say rebound on Denver's 16th Street Mall tied to new public safety efforts
DENVER (KDVR) — After years of struggling through crime concerns, pandemic aftershocks and prolonged construction, one local business on Denver's 16th Street Mall says the area is finally turning a corner — thanks in part to the city's renewed focus on safety and revitalization. Brooklyn's Finest Pizza, located along the once-bustling corridor, opened in 2019. But owner Carlo Conti said the past few years haven't been easy. Denver business advocates take fight against retail crime to nation's Capitol 'There was a lot of homelessness, a lot of drug use on the mall that I had never seen before — out in the open,' Conti said. 'There wasn't a lot of enforcement. It was like a ghost town.' Conti said his staff endured aggressive incidents inside the store, including theft, physical altercations and vandalism. He said business dropped so sharply, he ended up selling a property just to stay afloat. 'From 2023 to 2024, we took a $250,000 revenue hit from the construction on the mall — and that's just after we got out of COVID,' he said. Now, he says things are beginning to improve. The city of Denver has deployed additional officers to the area, along with private security teams and a mounted patrol unit. Officials say the visible presence is helping to deter crime, increase engagement and reassure both residents and tourists. 'If you want a successful city, you have to have a safe city,' said Jon Ewing with the mayor's office. 'Whether it's more officers on foot or the mounted patrol, we want people to know an officer is always just a stone's throw away.' Denver to increase downtown police presence in effort to invigorate area The enhanced patrols are part of a broader initiative to bring energy and business back to the 16th Street Mall — a focal point for both tourism and transit downtown. 'This is an amazing time to invest in our city,' Ewing said. 'When people visit Denver, this is where they come.' Conti said he's already seeing the impact. 'You can feel it coming back,' he said. 'The police presence is heavy, and they're enforcing it. A lot of the nonsense and riff-raff that was going on — it's no longer seen.' More importantly, he said, it's showing up in his bottom line. Denver puts $1.5M more into 16th Street Mall for summer events, activities 'I think the city is heading in the right direction. As a business owner, I'm looking forward to a very bright future on the mall.' City officials say a grand reopening event is planned around Memorial Day, when most of the 16th Street Mall is expected to reopen to pedestrians and buses. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Sanremo 2025: Extravagance and elegance mark first night of historic Italian song contest
The first night of Italy's famous Sanremo Musical Festival was marked by who was on stage as much as who was off it. Pope Francis set the tone with a message that music "is beauty and an instrument of peace", a theme followed up by Jovanotti's show and the performance of Israel's Noa and the Palestinian artist Mira Awad singing 'Imagine' together. Viewing data suggests some 12.6 million people watched the first evening of the 75th edition of the festival and the fourth of artistic director Carlo Conti. Perhaps surprisingly, the show finished at 1.20 a.m., exactly fifteen minutes earlier than the setlist provided but the music was the undisputed star of the night, during which all 29 artists in the competition performed. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sanremo Rai (@sanremorai) The five singers most popular with the press Brunori Sas, Giorgia, Lucio Corsi, Simone Cristicchi and Achille Lauro. These were, in no particular order, the top five artists of the first night of competition. The result of the vote was cast by press, TV and web journalists and announced by Carlo Conti along with co-hosts Gerry Scotti and Antonella Clerici. As rules require, the positions in the provisional ranking have not been announced. Expectations are high for the second evening where Måneskin frontman Damiano David will perform, along with the cast of 'Follemente', the new comedy by Paolo Genovese. On Wednesday, around half the singers will take to the stage to perform (after Emis Killa's withdrawal) while the others will do so on Thursday evening. Sanremo 2025: tributes and Jovanotti's party There was a moving homage to Fabrizio Frizzi and a performance by Jovanotti who, after a year and a half, delighted thousands dancing and singing on the streets of Sanremo. Dozens of drummers accompanied his rendition of 'L'ombelico del mondo'. As in 2016, Ezio Bosso's voice echoed across the city along with the notes of ' Following a bird' as he said: "Always remember: music, like life, can only be done in one way, together". He also gave thanks to Carlo Conti, Baglioni, Amadeus and paid special tribute to Mike Bongiorno and Pippo Baudo, "the father of the Festival as we know it now". There was additional entertainment when Italian flamboyant athlete Gianmarco Tamberi announced he will continue to compete until Los Angeles 2028. Despite Carlo Conti's rejection of monologues, the Olympic champion high jumper, opted to read a text together with Jovanotti before revealing that he does not want to retire.
