Carlton Davis III shows up at Pats' OTAs
Nothing provides cover for missing OTAs like having a teammate whose absence from the voluntary practices gets all the attention. In New England, free-agent receiver Stefon Diggs had been the focal point until he showed up on Monday. That kept the absences of cornerback Carlton Davis III from being noticed. Advertisement Via Mike Reiss of Davis had not been present for any of the OTA sessions that had been open to reporters until Thursday. In March, the Patriots signed Davis to a three-year, $54 million contract, with $34.5 million guaranteed. The 28-year-old arrived in the NFL as a second-round pick of the Buccaneers in 2018. After six years in Tampa, he was traded to the Lions last year. Davis appeared in 13 games for Detroit. A fractured jaw suffered against the Bills in Week 15 sidelined him for the rest of the season. In New England, he's expected to join Christian Gonzalez as the starting cornerbacks.

Milton Williams: It's going to get nasty with me and Keion White
The Patriots opened up the vault in free agency to add talent on their defense. Cornerback Carlton Davis, edge rusher Harold Landry, linebacker Robert Spillane, and defensive tackle Milton Williams all landed contracts with the team. The spending made it clear that there was dissatisfaction with the state of the defense in New England, but Williams doesn't think the cupboard was empty before their arrival. During an appearance on the Green Light podcast, Williams raved about his new teammate Keion White. Williams said he sees 'a lot of myself' in the 2023 second-round pick and that he thinks the two players are going to do big things together. 'Just how he carries himself, how he goes about his business, how he works,' Williams said, via 'Similar body type — 6-foot-4, 6-foot-5, 280, 290 pounds. Fast, strong, got everything in the toolbox to really line up wherever, having the versatility to play inside or outside. I pride myself on being able to do the same things. I already told him, like, 'If we end up on the same side, and we're just going to go rush, it's going to get nasty.' It's going to get nasty, for sure. I'm definitely excited.' White had 56 tackles and five sacks in 2024 while playing without Williams and the Patriots were also without Christian Barmore for most of the season. Barmore is set to return after dealing with blood clots and the trio will be a big part of the defensive plans for Mike Vrabel's first season as the team's head coach.

Ja'Marr Chase's 2023 comments on Carlton Davis should excite Patriots fans
Ja'Marr Chase's 2023 comments on Carlton Davis should excite Patriots fans Cincinnati Bengals star wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase named the best defensive back he'd faced in a 2023 Sunday Night Football interview, and his answer should excite New England Patriots fans. According to the triple crown-winning wideout, the best cornerback he had faced up to that point was Davis, who recently agreed to a three-year deal with the Patriots. "For me, I'll say Carlton Davis," said Chase. "Only reason why I say Carlton Davis is because he was longer than I expected—longer arms and he ain't got no knee bend. He just hunched his back over and just played defense. I think I played him twice, too. He made some good plays on me, and I ain't never going to forget that one." Chase is one of the most dynamic receivers in all of the NFL. He has matched up with and beaten some of the league's top corners. So the fact that he would extend such a huge compliment to Davis isn't something to take lightly. The two could meet up again with the Patriots slated to face the Bengals in 2025. Granted, All-Pro cornerback Christian Gonzalez also found success against Chase in their one-on-one battles in last year's regular season opener. The Patriots could have multiple ways to cover the All-Pro wide receiver.

Are the Patriots an early NFL free agency winner?
Yahoo Sports NFL analyst Nate Tice and fantasy analyst Matt Harmon discuss New England's focus on the defensive side of the ball - signing Milton Williams and Carlton Davis III - and why they were great moves for the team. Hear the full conversation on 'Football 301' - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you listen. View more I think the Patriots are putting together a very interesting defense. This might be a top 5, top 6 type defense. I said that a year ago, they had some stuff happen. So, uh, who knows, but I really like Milton Williams. Uh, Carlton Davis is a great number 2 opposite Christian Gonzalez. Davis is going to miss 3 to 4 games. It's what he does every year, but he's a fun, handsy, aggressive corner, fitting the line's perfect last year, should be a great number 2 here and explain. I really like. I think he's a nice solid linebacker for them. So I like all these signs. Yes, they're going to splurge, but they had the money to splurge and they upgraded a few spots here. But isn't it so classic that the, uh, Patriots have all this cap room and, uh, you know, it's just every fan is probably like, Please get us a wide receiver, get us a wide receiver. OK, well, tell me which wide receiver you're getting on the open market that you're really. You know, jumping out of your seat for, especially with Godwin going back to to Tampa Bay because that makes all the sense in the world. Uh, it's just they, they have all this cap room and they're spending on Milton Williams and like Carlton Davis and a bunch of guys on defense, and I actually don't mind it at all. Like the only offensive guy they've signed so far for decent money is Morgan Moses, and again, this is very classic Rael, and it makes sense too, like you forget sometimes, uh, until you actually go back and watch that defense, and I was just watching a DK charting DK Metcalfe against the Patriots uh early in the season. Um, this morning, after surprisingly entertaining game, very surprisingly entertaining game. Correct, yeah, 23 to 3. The Seahawks win both Jackson Smith and Jigba and DK Metcalf caught double-digit passes and won over 1000 yards. Um, yeah, so it was, it was an interesting game, but you forget sometimes because we're so focused on the offensive line and the weapons around Drake Bay, yada yada, that defense was. Bad last year, and I think a lot of it was coaching, but the coverage was a mess, the linebackers were a mess, and they couldn't get close enough to sneeze on the quarterback. So, uh, I think that like remaking that side of the ball, I get what fans want and what a lot of people want out there, but adding some real needle movers on defense was a must this offseason. Close
