Ja'Marr Chase's 2023 comments on Carlton Davis should excite Patriots fans
Cincinnati Bengals star wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase named the best defensive back he'd faced in a 2023 Sunday Night Football interview, and his answer should excite New England Patriots fans.
According to the triple crown-winning wideout, the best cornerback he had faced up to that point was Davis, who recently agreed to a three-year deal with the Patriots.
"For me, I'll say Carlton Davis," said Chase. "Only reason why I say Carlton Davis is because he was longer than I expected—longer arms and he ain't got no knee bend. He just hunched his back over and just played defense. I think I played him twice, too. He made some good plays on me, and I ain't never going to forget that one."
Chase is one of the most dynamic receivers in all of the NFL. He has matched up with and beaten some of the league's top corners. So the fact that he would extend such a huge compliment to Davis isn't something to take lightly.
The two could meet up again with the Patriots slated to face the Bengals in 2025. Granted, All-Pro cornerback Christian Gonzalez also found success against Chase in their one-on-one battles in last year's regular season opener.
The Patriots could have multiple ways to cover the All-Pro wide receiver.

Mike Vrabel lauds one area as strength for Patriots in 2025
Mike Vrabel lauds one area as strength for Patriots in 2025 New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel believes that the defensive line and linebacker positions are going to be strengths for the team in the upcoming season. When speaking with media members on Monday, he noted that the investments made in the front-seven during the offseason are a big reason for his confidence in those units. The linebacker position was upgraded with the additions of veterans Harold Landry III, Robert Spillane and Jack Gibbens. All three players have a history of working with Vrabel in the past. They also signed free agent defensive tackle Milton Williams to a historic deal, while also spending two draft picks on defensive tackle Joshua Farmer and edge rusher Bradyn Swinson. The defensive front should also be helped by a solid Patriots' secondary that added veteran Carlton Davis III to play opposite of All-Pro cornerback Christian Gonzalez. That extra time of opposing receivers fighting to get free should only increase the sack window for the front-seven. New England has improved at every level of the defense in the offseason, and there's a chance they could once again reign as one of the top units in the NFL. Who is on Ja'Marr Chase's "Mount Rushmore" as the best wide receivers in NFL history? And should he include himself next?
Who is on Ja'Marr Chase's "Mount Rushmore" as the best wide receivers in NFL history? And should he include himself next? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase is coming off the best season of his career, and one of the best in NFL history for a receiver. Advertisement He achieved the historic "triple crown" by leading the entire NFL in receptions (127), receiving yards (1,708) and receiving touchdowns (17) last season. The milestone had only been achieved 16 times by 12 other players prior to Chase's unbelievable season in 2024. The last player to hit this feat before Chase was Los Angeles Rams wideout Cooper Kupp during the 2021 season. That year ended with the Rams beating Chase's Bengals in the Super Bowl. Prior to the 2023 season, Chase was asked by Sports Illustrated who he would put on his "Mount Rushmore" for wide receivers - or the best four players at the position in NFL history. Advertisement After starting with Calvin Johnson and Antonio Brown, Chase showed love to the recent triple crown winner at the time. "Got to put Kupp in there with the triple crown," Chase said. He added the cherry on top with Jerry Rice, an "obvious" pick for any all-time receivers list. Rice is another triple crown winner, leading the league in all three categories in 1990 with the San Francisco 49ers. Little did Chase know, he would be the next receiver to join this exclusive club just two years later. Now the question: would he update his list by putting himself in? One way to answer this is to compare his 2024 season with the two triple crowns he put in ahead of him. Advertisement Chase's season doesn't really come close to Kupp's (145 receptions, 1,947 yards, 16 touchdowns), but it holds weight head-to-head with Rice's. Ja'Marr had higher totals than Jerry in each statistic. Rice finished 1990 with 100 catches, 1,502 yards and 13 touchdowns. Rice, however, has the upper hand overall with three other seasons where he led the NFL in two of the three major categories. Chase had never led the league in any stat before last year. The easy answer is to sub himself in for either Johnson or Brown, but those are no slouches either. "Megatron" led the league in receptions and yards, but only had five touchdowns in 2012. Brown led in catches and yards two years later, but finished second in touchdowns by three. Advertisement Chase may have a ways to go before he enters the "Mount Rushmore" conversation for receivers, but with just four seasons under his belt and an elite quarterback throwing him the pigskin for years to come, Chase is on pace to have a solid argument for his inclusion by the time he retires. Iowa football hires former NFL exec as revenue sharing arrives Iowa hired former Chiefs GM/Patriots executive Scott Pioli as preparation for revenue sharing and will continue to work with all of Iowa's programs. Pioli has been at Iowa's football practices previously and is close with football coach Kirk Ferentz. — Scott Dochterman (@ScottDochterman) June 9, 2025 The world of college sports has officially changed, and in a hugely seismic way. The era of revenue sharing, where schools can directly pay players, is upon us and will change the way that college sports look moving forward. Schools can be accepting of this or get left behind. The Iowa Hawkeyes are ahead of the curve and are making moves to position themselves for success in this new world. The Hawkeyes have dug into the NFL world of executives with an understanding of operating in this world. To help their athletic programs, Iowa has hired Scott Pioli, the former Kansas City Chiefs general manager and New England Patriots executive, to prepare for revenue sharing, as reported by Scott Dochterman of The Athletic. The move brings Pioli into the fold with Iowa football head coach Kirk Ferentz, with whom he is close. Piolo joins Iowa after most recently being the Atlanta Falcons' assistant general manager from 2014-2019. Scott Pioli brings a mountain of experience in his career, as he has been in the NFL since 1992 in a multitude of roles, from scouting to player personnel to the front office. Before that, Pioli coached in college from 1988 to 1991 with stops at Syracuse and Murray State. A three-time Super Bowl champion in the NFL, Scott Pioli has been named the PWFA Executive of the Year three times (2003, 2007, 2010) and the Sporting News NFL Executive of the Year twice (2003, 2004).
