Auckland girls' high school Carmel College lockdown lifted

Carmel College is no longer in lockdown. Photo: DAN CHILDS 0273264355 A 14-year-old student says they lay on the floor in the dark for an hour while a lockdown was underway at their high school. The student told RNZ Carmel College, a Catholic girls' secondary school, went into lockdown at 1.55pm, however the lockdown has now been lifted. An earlier message from the school to parents stated Carmel College in Milford was conducting a "real lockdown" from 2.13pm on Thursday. "Please refrain from contacting any staff at the school as this could lead ot further distraction of their primary focus, which is caring for our students," the statement said. It directed parents and caregivers to the school website for further updates. The school on the shores of Lake Pupuke on Auckland's North Shore caters for students from Year 7 to 13. However at about 3pm a new message from principal Sarah Kemble said the school was now out of lockdown and "all students, staff and persons on-site are safely accounted for". "A notice will be going out to parents/caregivers tonight to provide some more information on what has occurred today." It's unclear why the school went into lockdown but a parent said police were on site at the time.
