A mother and daughter, six, have been killed in a horror crash involving a car and a van in Co Donegal. They have been named locally as Natalie McLaughlin and daughter, Ella. Ella died in the collision, which occurred on the R240 at Glentogher, Carndonagh, on Wednesday evening. Her mother, aged in her 20s, was taken to Altnagelvin Hospital in Londonderry following the crash and was later transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast, where she died on Thursday evening. A man in his 30s and another girl, who was a rear seat passenger in the car, are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at hospitals in Northern Ireland. SDLP Foyle MLA Mark Durkan said that Ms McLaughlin was 'well known and respected in the area'. In a social media post alongside a photograph of the mother and daughter, he said: 'This is the beautiful young mum and daughter, Natalie and Ella McLaughlin, who were tragically killed in a collision near their home in Carndonagh on Wednesday night. 'Natalie was a nurse in a local doctor's surgery and was well known and respected in the area. 'Wee Ella was just six. 'Our thoughts and prayers are with all affected by this terrible tragedy.' Fianna Fail councillor Martin McDermott told the BBC that people locally were finding it difficult to 'comprehend what has happened'. He said: 'This is a young mother and a young child, it has a real effect on people, on the community, people just don't know what to say. 'Everybody's life in that circle is changed forevermore.' He added: 'It has been very, very difficult over the last couple of days, it will be difficult over the next number of days, over the weeks and months ahead particularly for the families involved.' An Garda Siochana is appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact them. A spokesperson said: 'Any road users who may have camera footage, including dashcam, and were travelling in the area between 6pm and 6.30pm on Wednesday July 2, are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardai. 'Anyone with information is asked to contact Buncrana Garda station at 074 932 0540, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.'

Fr Con McLaughlin said it was difficult to put into words the sense of grief locally."At Mass this morning I spoke to people about it and they were shocked into silence," he said."You could feel the silence, people are really shocked."Words are not adequate to express how you feel in this situation and how much worse it must be for the family concerned."He said he had been to Altnagelvin hospital on Wednesday and said the scene was "something I will never forget". Gardaí have asked anyone who witnessed the collision or who has dashcam footage to come forward.

‘Such a lovely family': Mother and daughter who died in Donegal crash named locally
A mother and daughter who died following a road crash near Carndonagh, Co Donegal on Wednesday evening have been named locally. They were Natalie McLaughlin and her six-year-old daughter Ella McLaughlin from Carndonagh. Ms McLaughlin's partner, Tyrone Irwin, is still in a serious condition at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry but his injuries are not understood to be life-threatening. The couple's other daughter, Rhea Rose (2), was transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital from Altnagelvin for specialist treatment but her injuries are also understood to not be life-threatening. Ella was pronounced dead at the scene while her mother, father and sister were rushed to the nearest hospital across the border in Derry. Ms McLaughlin, who was in her 20s, was well-known in her native Carndonagh where she worked as a nurse in a local doctor's surgery. She qualified with a Bachelor of Science in Adult Nursing from Ulster University and began working as a Registered Nurse in 2022. Her parents – Ella's grandparents, Danny and Joanne, and both extended families were last night being comforted by friends. Cathaoirleach of the Inishowen Municipal Authority, Cllr Martin McDermott, said his thoughts and prayers are with the entire family. 'Words fall short at this time, what can anybody say? They are such a lovely family and so well respected in our local community,' he said. 'It's just devastating. The loss of anybody on our roads is difficult for any community to take. 'But the loss of a mother and daughter, particularly given the fact that they are so young, is even more poignant and more difficult to accept. 'People are just numb and there is very little I can add to that other than to keep them all in our thoughts and prayers.' Gardaí continue to investigate all aspects of the collision. The road on which the collision occurred, the R240 at Carrowmore, was closed for a technical examination by Forensic Collision Investigators but reopened yesterday afternoon. Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them. Second person dies following road crash in Carndonagh, Co Donegal
A second person has died following a road traffic collision in Carndonagh, Co Donegal on Wednesday evening. An Garda Síochána said the woman (20s) who was driving the vehicle died at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast on Thursday. A six-year-old girl was fatally injured in the crash on the R240 road at Carrowmore, Glentogher, which involved a car and a van. Gardaí and the emergency services were alerted to the crash shortly before 6.30pm. Two others people who were travelling in the vehicle remain in hospital. 'Our local community just feel devastated that once again a local family have been challenged and having to face the loss of a loved one, it's terrible news here.' Cllr Doherty told RTÉ Morning Ireland that conditions for driving at the time were favourable, but that the road in question had been the scene of previous fatal crashes. 'Unfortunately locally here in Carndonagh at the turn of this year, we had the tragic loss of a young man. And here again now, a local family are having to face the terrible, terrible burden of losing a loved one...' A parish priest who rushed to hospital following the tragic crash said he would never forget the scenes in the emergency department. Fr Con McLaughlin attended Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry as soon as he heard about the incident in an effort to provide comfort for those involved. 'On hearing about the accident I went straight over to Altnagelvin Hospital and the scene (in accident and emergency) is something I will never forget,' he said. 'In the community there is a shock and a disbelief. One can only imagine what the family are going through and I witnessed that pain in the hospital last night. 'The scene in the hospital was just so, so sad. You had doctors and nurses running around trying to do their best to help these poor helpless people. It is something I will never, ever forget. 'I just wanted to be a presence there for the family and I did not speak too much but I just wanted them to know that we are all there for them.' Sinn Féin TD for Donegal Pádraig Mac Lochlainn said it was 'such heart breaking news this morning about another tragedy on our roads in Donegal'. Community 'raw with grief' after death of child in Co Donegal collision
Carndonagh Sinn Féin councillor Albert Doherty has said the local community was 'raw with grief' at the news of the death of a child who was a passenger in a car involved in a collision with a van on the R240 at Carrowmore, Glentogher, in Carndonagh on Wednesday evening. 'This tragic accident has just confirmed the terrible news that we heard after the accident. There's been one fatality, three seriously injured and our local community once again is raw with grief and our local community just feel devastated that once again a local family have been challenged and having to face the loss of a loved one, it's terrible news here.' Advertisement Cllr Doherty told RTÉ radio's Morning Ireland that conditions for driving at the timer had been favourable, but that the road in question has been the scene of previous fatal accidents.
