Speakers will explore the actionable paths to a brighter, more inclusive, South Africa, drawing on a recent report published by the African Futures team at the ISS. Amid shifting local reforms, a fragile government of national unity (GNU), and a volatile global landscape, News24 will co-host a virtual seminar on Tuesday to delve deeper into South Africa's possible futures and the strategic decisions needed to get us to a better, brighter tomorrow. Hosted by the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) and the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF), the publication joins the entities, to explore how targeted reforms in governance, infrastructure, education, energy and trade could be the key to unlocking a more prosperous future for South Africa. News24 writer-at-large Carol Paton will moderate the session, taking place at 11:00 on Tuesday 8 July. She'll be joined by the following speakers: Dr Jakkie Cilliers, Head, African Futures & Innovation at ISS Busisiwe Mavuso, CEO of Business Leadership SA Wandile Sihlobo, Chief Economist at Agbiz Ashor Surapen, Deputy Minister of Finance Drawing on insights from the South African 2043 Futures Report, published by the African Futures team at the ISS, the event will outline two distinct and compelling development scenarios and pathways to tread forward in leading the nation. One pathway will follow a route of familiar stagnation, while the other takes an inclusive growth approach led and guided by bold reforms. Bolstered by insights from government, business and civil society, the seminar will examine how South Africa's position in the broader African Continental Free Trade Area could better enhance economic prospects. These voices from the different sectors of South African society – political, financial and civil – will create a holistic lens through which to consider the issues, as the speakers strategise the possible reforms that will also rebuild trust and attract trusted and growth-focused investments.
