What James Corden's reign as London mayor will look like

It is hard to know for certain what put James Corden onto the idea of seeking elected office. Perhaps he craves a new challenge now that Gavin, Stacey, Smithy and Nessa have ridden off into the sunset. Or maybe, having returned to the UK after nearly a decade in the US, he realises how many lessons this history boy has to teach his motherland. We cannot discount the possibility that Corden has been inspired by the example of Volodymyr Zelensky, who has shown that there is a clear route from comedian to heroic wartime leader. All Corden needs is an election victory or two and an invasion by a large, hostile foreign power and he, too, could be on track to earn the respect of Ben Stiller. Attending the TV Baftas last weekend, Hillingdon's finest Peter Rabbit met the three hosts of the Electoral Dysfunction podcast: Sky News's political editor Beth Rigby, former Scottish Conservatives leader Ruth Davidson and the former Labour deputy leader Harriet Harman. According to one onlooker, Corden told the women he was a 'regular listener' and enjoyed the 'cut and thrust of politics'. In the same conversation, the onlooker told the The Mail on Sunday: 'It was suggested that he should step into the political arena and stand in the future. There was talk that he should run for Mayor of London.' Sadiq Khan is expected to step down before the next Mayoral election, scheduled for 2028, so Labour will need a new candidate. Corden is believed to be a supporter of the party, and criticised Jeremy Corbyn's leadership after the 2019 election defeat. 'I can't shake the feeling that if Tom Watson had been leader of the Labour Party the outcome of this could've all been so different,' he tweeted. 'Jeremy Corbyn has now lost two elections to opposition candidates who could've and should've been beaten.' The implication is clear: it would not have happened on Corden's watch. So, what might the Corden regime look like? He has kept his political cards close to his chest, although he supported Remain, so he might continue Khan's pro-EU agenda. There would surely be arts grants. If he is truly devoted to Harriet Harman, we can expect him to be pro the winter fuel allowance, which would put him out of kilter with Sir Keir Starmer. He has also suggested Donald Trump's agenda isn't simply 'politics', arguing opposing the US president is about 'good versus evil'. In that regard, a Corden mayoralty would follow in Khan's mould. Khan has also made many enemies with his aggressive anti-car policies. Corden, who gave the world Carpool Karaoke, a popular interview format in which he shout-sings over celebrity guests, might continue in this vein: what could be a worse advert for a car than the prospect of him singing in it? Cycling uptake would soar. Corden certainly has many of the attributes needed for a modern political career. He is famous, for a start, which is increasingly the main thing voters look for in a leader. The example of Trump shows that there is no ceiling to success, whatever your other personal qualities, provided you have been on telly a bit. Corden has broad appeal too. Granted, it is comic appeal. But it is broad. Gavin & Stacey and The Late Late Show pulled in vast audiences. He also has no shortage of famous friends, who he might rope in to the mayoralty. Harry Styles would be a good tsar for the capital's ailing nightlife. There's also Brooklyn Beckham, a man who has held a dizzying number of jobs – photographer, chef, hot sauce entrepreneur, racing car driver – without succeeding at any of them. In this regard, is he so different from Chris Grayling? Beckham without portfolio. And could Corden be the man, finally, to get his pal Prince Harry home? He has shown that after years of self-inflicted exile in California, it is possible to move back to the UK and bring a long-running family comedy-drama to a satisfactory conclusion. Harry take note. Anna Wintour, another friend of Corden's, was said to have been disappointed not to be Barack Obama's ambassador to the UK. She'd be a natural deputy mayor for culture, but it would be more interesting to see what she would do at Transport for London. The uniforms would be good, at any rate. Perhaps most importantly, Corden is also thick-skinned, having endured years of criticism about his character. There are many anecdotes about the star's rudeness and petulance in person. Last year Lily Allen said he had come on a bit strong, to which he – sorry, sources close to him – replied that he was 'over people talking about him in a negative way'. Then there was his much-publicised feud with the New York restaurateur Keith McNally, who called Corden a 'cretin' for his behaviour in the Manhattan brasserie Balthazar. Corden apologised and has been readmitted to McNally's restaurants. You know who else was rude in person but popular with the voters? Winston Churchill. The man himself has yet to confirm his ambitions either way. But it would be foolish to write Corden off. As Bob Monkhouse might have said, we laughed when James Corden announced his mayoral ambitions. Will we still be laughing when he wins? Broaden your horizons with award-winning British journalism. Pitch N Ride Returns: The Most High-Stakes Car Ride in Cairo Is Back

Pitch N Ride is back at RiseUp Summit 2025—putting Egypt's most ambitious startups in the passenger seat with the region's top investors. Apr 30, 2025 It's not every day that your elevator pitch takes place in a moving vehicle- with the Pyramids rolling past the window. But that's exactly the premise of Pitch N Ride, RiseUp Summit's most high-octane investor experience, returning this year with even more heat. Held on May 9th and 10th, Pitch N Ride will see ten of the most promising startups selected to join a private ride around the Grand Egyptian Museum and Pyramids area—each trip pairing one startup founder with one top investor. Think Carpool Karaoke, but with cap tables and term sheets. Startups exhibiting at RiseUp can apply through this form by May 1st to secure their spot. Once selected, they'll be eligible to register for Pitch N Ride here - but with only 10 slots available, competition will be fierce. The format is deceptively simple: * Investors review the exhibiting startups. * They handpick one. * The two get in the car. * If all goes well, they drive off into the funding sunset. Previous years have seen standout startups like Rabbit, Tayary, and Chefaa turn summit moments into strategic partnerships, funding rounds, and regional buzz. In a region where access to capital is often more about chemistry than cold calls, Pitch N Ride gives founders what they crave most- face time, fast tracks, and focused attention. So if you've got a vision worth backing—and the nerves to pitch it in motion- buckle up.

Do ginger shots really do anything? I asked 2 experts and took them every day for a month to find out

WHILE immunity boosting isn't new, particularly for those with young kids, it's likely been on our minds a lot more since the pandemic. There's been a range of products released over the years, from 10 Lily Ruaah took ginger shots every day for a month to see if they made any difference to her health Credit: Lily Ruaah 10 Selena Gomez, pictured with James Corden on Carpool Karaoke, swears by ginger shots Credit: YouTube 10 Eva Longoria also makes her own 'wellness shots' at home Credit: Tiktok But one of the most accessible - and perhaps appealing - is It is also said to aid weight loss, as well as Many of us - including celebs like Anna Kendrick, Selena Gomez and 'If I'm travelling and I can't have ginger, I feel sick. I'm positive it's the only thing keeping me alive.' Meanwhile, singer Selena said the shots 'kill all the bad things' inside her, and But do Most read in Diet & Nutrition Registered dietitian and author of 'It can also contribute to heart health and support blood sugar regulation when consumed as part of a healthy, varied diet.' Seven hacks to help you live longer Ginger didn't hit the market in its concentrated shot form until the early 2010s, when companies like Press London and Plenish began incorporating ginger shots into their product lines. But Nichola says there may be a setback to consuming ginger in this way. 'Ginger shots should not be relied upon as a magic bullet for health as the amount of ginger they actually contain will vary,' she says. 'They also are often combined with fruit juice, which should be limited to 150ml a day to control free-sugar intake.' She prefers to advise patients to add ground ginger to But if you're still interested in giving them a try, here is everything you need to know… My test DESPITE the weather warming up (a bit anyway), trains, offices and supermarkets are still full of people I'd tried probiotic yoghurt drinks but as someone who was also trying to cut down on Of course, I knew all about the existence ginger shots - they've been on the supermarket shelves for years - but I'd never put the time and effort into actually taking them regularly. I had also heard rumours that drinking ginger first thing in the morning would damage the enamel on my teeth, so I was a little apprehensive. That being said, with friends and colleagues repeatedly falling ill, I decided it was worth it if it would get me back on my feet, and decided I'd test ginger shots for a few weeks. Is it worth buying ginger shots? I WANTED to try shop-bought ginger shots first as there are so many new products out there. I picked up the MOJU Fresh Root Ginger Shots and was lucky enough to find them on offer. Usually you're looking at £6 or more for a bottle. A bottle of the classic MOJU contains apple, ginger root (20 per cent), lemon, acerola cherry powder, antioxidant: ascorbic acid. While incredibly convenient to just pick up a bottle, you aren't in control of everything that's added in! 10 Pre-made ginger shots, like these from MOJU, are available in most supermarkets Credit: Lily Ruaah 10 Anna Kendrick says she is 'powered by ginger' Credit: Splash Shop-bought first impressions IT tastes great — that was my immediate thought when I had my first Monday morning MOJU shot. Not too spicy, and surprisingly sweet considering it's positioned as a health food option. It was a nice way to start the day and I might say a good way to wake yourself up first thing. I'd heard ginger shots are most beneficial if you have them in the morning before anything else, but is it necessarily true that you need to knock them back in the AM? If you enjoy them and they make you feel good, they can be a great addition to your routine, but they're not an essential health fix on their own Nichola Ludlam-Raine Dietitian Nichola says: 'There's no definitive evidence that taking a ginger shot first thing in the morning enhances its benefits, but some people prefer it on an empty stomach to aid digestion. 'Pairing ginger with turmeric, which contains curcumin, may offer additional anti-inflammatory effects — especially when consumed with black pepper to enhance absorption. 'However, for those with acid reflux or a sensitive stomach, concentrated ginger shots may cause irritation. 'In these cases, consuming ginger in food or as a tea may be a gentler alternative.' I didn't get a sensitive stomach consuming ginger every morning and really, the most important thing for me, I didn't get ill at all during the time I had these — not even a sniffly nose! So, maybe they were doing something. How to make your own ginger shots AFTER one week testing the shop-bought shots, and seeing some noticeable changes, though nothing major, I decided to make my own to see if that would make a bigger difference. There are thousands of different ginger shot recipes online so I used these as inspiration when coming up with my own. I used fresh ginger root (£5.50 per kg), turmeric root (£15 per kg) and Tesco's Lemon, Ginger and Apple Juice (£2 for 1litre). Normally you'd use classic apple juice, but as I wanted to use lemon in my shots anyway, this seemed like a happy medium. 10 Lily also made her own, using fresh ginger, turmeric and bottled juice from Tesco Credit: Lily Ruaah 10 You don't need a juicer, you can just sieve the blended mixture Credit: Lily Ruaah 10 Making them yourself is a cheaper way to take ginger shots Credit: Lily Ruaah A lot of the recipes I'd seen online used juicers but unfortunately as someone who isn't blessed with a Ninja Cold Press Juicer, I had to do it the old fashioned way. However, this was surprisingly easy - you just need a regular Blend ginger root, turmeric root and a fair splash of the juice and you'll get a kind of paste. From here, just sieve this into a jug or jar. You may be surprised by how little juice this makes but I topped mine up with the shop-bought juice and there was plenty. Homemade f irst impressions THESE hit a lot harder in terms of spice — it could be the fresh ginger or the turmeric but the flavour was a lot stronger. And also notably sweet. If I was going to make my own ginger shots again, I'd recommend using a low or no-sugar juice or an alternative like Though that could push up the cost! Shop-bought vs homemade ginger shots OVERALL it was close, but the freshness and quality of ingredients was always going to be better in something you make yourself from scratch. However, I found the pre-made MOJU shots improved my immune system just as well, so if you're looking for convenience, they're still a fantastic option. 10 Are ginger shots bad for your teeth? AFTER taking ginger shots every day for several weeks, I hadn't noticed any difference in the sensitivity or colour of my But often these things build up over time - so will ginger shots damage my gnashers? 'Acidic drinks can wear down enamel over time, making your teeth more sensitive and prone to cavities. 'So, if your ginger shot is really citrusy it might be worth drinking it through a straw to minimise contact with your teeth. 'If you already struggle with sensitive teeth, it's a good idea to check in with your dentist to see if your enamel needs some extra protection. 'It's worth noting that a lot of ginger shots also include turmeric, which stains everything, including teeth! 'This shouldn't be an issue in moderation, but regular consumption could lead to gradual discolouration over time.' The health benefits of ginger YOU can buy it fresh, dried, powdered or as an oil or juice, and it's found in everything from curries to smoothies. But is ginger really as good for you as people say it is? Research by the Catholic University of San Antonio de Murcia found ginger to have powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. A study by Seoul National University found it to be effective against nausea, including pregnancy-related morning sickness. Taking a ginger supplement significantly reduced body weight and waist-to-hip ratio in overweight or obese people in a review published in the journal Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition. Ginger could also reduce pain and disability in patients with osteoarthritis, according to a review in the journal Osteoarthritis and Cartilage. A study by Kashan University of Medical Sciences found a significant reduction in fasting blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes after taking ginger supplements. Researchers at Policlinico di Monza in Milan discovered that consuming ginger before eating a main meal significantly improved symptoms of indigestion. A study published in the Taiwanese Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology suggested ginger could be as effective as ibuprofen in relieving menstrual pain. A review of 26 trials by Tabriz University of Medical Sciences found ginger lowered levels of bad cholesterol linked to an increased risk of heart disease. Certain compounds in ginger may help prevent degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, according to research published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition. Ginger's antimicrobial properties could also make it useful for fighting bacterial and fungal infections, scientists at Busitema University say. I also spoke to him about the impact of having an acidic drink first thing in the morning and whether it could damage your teeth. 'It's not the worst thing, but it's not ideal either,' he says. 'Your enamel is a bit more vulnerable in the morning, and if you're having something acidic, it can soften it temporarily.' He went on to explain that brushing immediately afterwards could actually do more harm than good. 'It's best to rinse your mouth with water and wait at least 30 minutes before brushing.' he adds. Does taking ginger shots every day boost your immune system? SO the question we all want to know - will ginger shots actually keep us well? The answer is, maybe. 'Ginger contains beneficial compounds such as gingerol, which has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties,' Nichola says. 'While these properties can support overall health, there is currently limited strong evidence to suggest that ginger shots alone significantly improve the immune system or prevent illness.' She adds: 'While ginger shots can be a convenient way to include ginger in your diet, they should not replace a balanced diet or healthy lifestyle. 'If you enjoy them and they make you feel good, they can be a great addition to your routine, but they're not an essential health fix on their own. 'As with any concentrated food or supplement, moderation is key!' Personally, I felt a measurable but marginal improvement within my health and overall vitality while taking ginger shots. Read more on the Irish Sun And it's hard to say if I was feeling the effects of ginger shots or just finally feeling better after several bouts of illness. Either way, I think that taking ginger shots can be a fun, and tasty way to begin your day. 10 The Desperate Housewives star shared her recipe on Instagram Credit: Tiktok

Beatles' hit 'Let It Be' was inspired by Paul McCartney's tragic heartbreak

Let It Be is still considered one of The Beatles' - whose popularity endures with fans recently hailing two of their tracks as having the 'greatest transition' they ever heard - finest tunes, but there's a poignant tale behind its inception. Written and performed by Paul McCartney, the song became the band's last single before Paul - whom fans believe they have "worked out" his real reason for leaving The Beatles - announced his exit. Years later, Paul revealed the inspiration for Let It Be, attributing it to his mother's passing. Paul's mother, Mary Patricia McCartney, tragically died from an embolism following breast cancer surgery when he was only 14. Speaking to James Corden on Carpool Karaoke, Paul, who opened up on his acrimony with John Lennon, who he said wanted to "punch him," shared: "I had a dream in the 60s where my mum who died came to me in a dream and was reassuring me, saying, 'It's gonna be OK. Just let it be." However, another version of the story exists. Paul McCartney wrote Let It Be (Image: Getty Images) Mal Evans, a road manager and personal assistant for The Beatles, worked closely with Neil Aspinall as the band's main man and became good friends with The Fab Four, reports the Mirror US . During a 1975 TV special hosted by David Frost titled A Salute To The Beatles, Mal claimed he was the actual inspiration for the song. He said: "Paul was meditating one day and I came to him in a vision, and I was just standing there saying, 'let it be, let it be." He elaborated: "And that's where the song came from... It's quite a tale because we were returning from a session one night, and there it was, 3 a.m., amid the rain and darkness of London, with Paul recounting this story and declaring he'd penned this tune." The Beatles are still hugely popular (Image: Bob Thomas Sports Photography via Getty Images) The man also noted that the famed "Mother Mary" line was originally set to be different. Reflecting on Paul's words, Mal recalled him saying: "It was gonna be Brother Malcolm but I've had to change it in case people get the wrong idea!" Nonetheless, a rare outtake of the melody uncovered in the 2018 50th-anniversary edition of the White Album appears to authenticate his claim. In the archived track, Paul tests out Let It Be while working on the number of Piggies. Therein, his voice rings out: "When I find myself in times of trouble, Brother Malcolm comes to me." ' But the writers are also clearly aware that a late night show isn't what it was when Deborah first pursued this dream. The existing late night hosts are quite entrenched in their particular segments of that ecosystem, leaving Deborah to fight for good guests, and in the streaming era, it's a struggle to get people to tune in to traditional programming. Plus, network exec Winnie (Helen Hunt) keeps pestering her to come up with a spinoff to the tune of James Corden's 'Carpool Karaoke' to boost the show's prospects. Advertisement Hacks remains strongest when it delves into the prickly bond between Ava and Deborah, even if it's starting to feel like the writers are trying to find reasons to keep the two apart. The central thesis that two such different (and deeply flawed) people could come together and find a profound connection in the creative process remains a fascinating one to watch, bolstered as it is by Jean Smart's Where it struggles is in building compelling narratives around them, and the season loses some momentum as it resolves its conflicts. Marcus (Carl Clemons-Hopkins), the CEO of Deborah's company, and DJ (Kaitlin Olson), her daughter, both have limited arcs this season, while Jimmy (Paul W. Downs) and Kayla's (Megan Stalter) efforts to build up their talent firm are funny but less juicy than the Ava/Deborah plotline. In a bid to boost Deborah's ratings, they hire an influencer from Canada by the name of Dance Mom, whose aw shucks bumpkinism is swiftly debased by her time in LA. Mass. native Julianne Nicholson gives an all-out performance in the role, but the subplot doesn't exactly sizzle; it intersects minimally with the main plot, and the joke wears thin, despite Nicholson's best efforts. Four seasons in, the central dynamic in 'Hacks' remains eminently watchable — it's heartening to watch a show that cares this much about what it means to make good art, and we're reaching 'would watch Jean Smart read a stereo manual' levels with her performance. If it can't quite hit the highs of its earliest seasons, there's still something to be said for a show that has such a strong engine built into it.
