Johnston man jailed for driving drunk with 3 kids in van, police say

DES MOINES, Iowa — A Johnston man was arrested early Monday morning after police said he was driving drunk with three children in the vehicle. Jesus Carranza Rivera, 45, is charged with OWI and three counts of child endangerment-substantial risk in the incident. He was also cited for open container. Criminal complaints filed by the Johnston Police Department said Carranza Rivera was pulled over around 1:41 a.m. in the 5700 block of NW 62nd Avenue after an officer witnessed the minivan he was driving cross the center line and fog line several times. An open can of Modelo beer, which was still cold, and a half-full bottle of tequila were found in the rear pocket of the front passenger seat. More cans of beer were found in the driver's side door pocket. The complaint said Carranza Rivera admitted to drinking alcohol while driving home from Minneapolis. There were three children in the care with Carranza Rivera at the time. Police said none of the kids were properly secured by safety restraints. Results of Datamaster testing of a breath sample from Carranza Rivera were 0.166, according to police. The legal limit for driving in Iowa is 0.08. A preliminary hearing in the case has been scheduled for May 15th.
