Carlos "Cookie" Carrasco started six games for the New York Yankees this season, providing much-needed help to an injury-battered pitching staff. But with a 5.91 ERA and 2-2 record, the Yankees designated Carrasco for assignment on May 6. The 38-year-old, 16-year veteran — who was signed to a minor league deal by the Yankees before spring training but pitched his way onto the big league roster — accepted his demotion to Triple-A, but on Sunday he got the call. He would be rejoining the Yankees for their final game of a three-game set against the Los Angeles Dodgers. About 24 hours later, Carrasco was gone again. He did not get into the Sunday game against the Dodgers, and the Yankees then placed Carrasco on outright waivers, meaning he can now be claimed by any other team. NEW YORK, NY - APRIL 25: Carlos Carrasco #59 of the New York Yankees looks on during the game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium on April 25, 2025 in New York, New York. More New"It seems unlikely that Carrasco will be claimed. He just cleared less than a month ago and hasn't been in great form since," explained Darragh McDonald of MLB Trade Rumors. "However, it's also theoretically possible that there's a team which has been snakebit by injuries of late and is more willing to take a chance on Carrasco now than they were just a few weeks ago." Carrasco broke into the major leagues with the Cleveland Guardians (then still known as the Indians) in 2009. In 12 seasons with Cleveland, he won 91 games against 83 losses with a 3.91 ERA. Cleveland traded him to the New York Mets, for whom he pitched from 2021 to 2023 — earning a total of $38 million over those three seasons. More MLB: Trade Idea Lets Yankees Get Rid of Carlos Carrasco For MLB-Ready Righty Prospect After he spent last season back in Cleveland, the Yankees offered the Barquisimeto, Venezuela, native a $1.3 million minor league deal for this year, which he accepted. Now, it appears that his brief, up-and-down Yankees career is over. "Not unexpectedly, Carlos Carrasco was with the Yankees for just one day as pitching depth protection and was placed on outright waivers," reported New York Post columnist Joel Sherman. "With no unexpected setbacks, the (Yankees) were lined up to activate Fernando Cruz from the IL on Tuesday." If Carrasco goes unclaimed on the waiver wire, he can elect to declare free agency, or accept another minor league assignment if the Yankees choose to offer him one. Yankees Waive Veteran Starter Amid Injury News: Report

Yankees Waive Veteran Starter Amid Injury News: Report originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Yankees continued to shift around their pitching depth on June 2, as reported news of veteran starter Carlos Carrasco hitting waivers again surfaced on X. Advertisement Carrasco only rejoined the Yankees' active roster on June 1, as the Pinstripes elected to call him back up after exhausting much of their bullpen on Saturday. The Yankees did not end up needing Carrasco for the Sunday Night Baseball matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers, meaning he will not take the mound during his latest brief stint in the majors. Veteran starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco pitches for the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium in Carchietta-Imagn Images New York Post insider Joel Sherman reported the Carrasco news on Monday, and he added that this move hints at an injury returnee being activated in his place. "Source: Not unexpectedly, Carlos Carrasco was with the Yankees for just 1 day as pitching depth protection and was placed on outright waivers," Sherman relayed. "With no unexpected setbacks, the NYY were lined up to activate Fernando Cruz from the IL on Tuesday." Advertisement Getting Cruz back will be key for the Yankees' bullpen going forward. Before his injury, Cruz maintained a 2.66 ERA over the first 21 appearances of his 2025 campaign and Yankees tenure. The 35-year-old reliever also struck out a ridiculous 35 batters in just 23.2 innings pitched, yielding a strikeouts per nine average of 13.3. Of course, with Yankees closer Luke Weaver suffering a hamstring injury while stretching on Sunday night, according to manager Aaron Boone, Cruz's return could be even more vital over the next few games. It's currently unclear if Weaver will require a stint on the injured list. As of now, it seems Weaver was pulled from entering the game on Sunday out of precaution, but we'll wait and see if there's more to this injury. Yankees designate veteran RHP Carlos Carrasco for assignment

NEW YORK (AP) — Needing another reliever, the New York Yankees designated struggling starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco for assignment on Tuesday. The Yankees recalled Yerry de Los Santos from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre to replace Carrasco. The right-hander made his only appearance for the Yankees during a doubleheader on April 27 against Toronto and is 1-1 with a 1.74 ERA in 10 appearances in Triple-A. Carrasco was 2-2 with a 5.91 ERA in eight appearances and made six starts for the Yankees, whose rotation began Tuesday with a 3.92 ERA. Carlos Rodón and Max Fried have combined to go 10-3 with a 2.03 ERA while other Yankees starters are 3-6 with a 6.02 ERA. 'It was a tough call, with how we feel about Cookie,' manager Aaron Boone said before the Yankees continued a three-game series with the San Diego Padres. 'We've toyed with it for a couple of days now, and just felt like it was the right time.' Injuries to Gerrit Cole (elbow) and Luis Gil (lat) created a spot for Carrasco, who signed a one-year contract on March 22. Carrasco was in spring training on a minor league deal and could have opted out but he was re-signed after posting a 1.69 ERA in five spring training outings, including four starts. Carrasco was 3-10 with a 5.64 ERA in 21 starts for Cleveland last season. In 15 seasons, Carrasco has a 112-105 record and 4.18 ERA. He led the American League in wins in 2017, when he was 18-6 with Cleveland and also was named the 2019 AL Comeback Player of the Year following a return from leukemia. 'What I told him is, 'I've always admired him from across the diamond,'' Boone said. 'We got to see it up close, in what a phenomenal human being Carlos is, with the class with which he carries himself. It really was a pleasure to be around him for these last couple of months, and who knows? He may be back here.' Boone did not immediately say who would take Carrasco's spot. The Yankees may use Ryan Yarbrough, who pitched four scoreless innings filling in for Clarke Schmidt on Saturday. Another option Boone hinted at is Allan Winans, who has pitched 14 scoreless innings in Triple-A. Stanton faces live pitching Giancarlo Stanton, recovering from epicondylitis in both elbows since the start of spring training , took two at-bats and saw 10 pitches in a live batting practice session from reliever Jake Cousins, who is rehabbing a right elbow flexor strain. Stanton is expected to remain in New York during the upcoming West Coast trip and continue rehabbing against the high-velocity Trajekt machine. 'I thought his at-bats were really good,' Boone said. 'Cousins is not an easy at-bat for a righty, especially. I thought Cousins looked good and G looked like he was controlling the at-bats pretty well.' ___ AP MLB:
