49ers vs. Broncos: Worst performances from San Francisco's sloppy loss to Denver

The San Francisco 49ers put forth just a horrendous effort in their first preseason game of the 2025 season, resulting in a 30-9 defeat at the hands of the Denver Broncos at Levi's Stadium. San Francisco entered the battle without most of their starters, and it was evident as they looked overmatched. However, that didn't change later in the game as more backups and third-string players took the field for both sides. While it's difficult to look around and identify which 49ers shone on Saturday, the task is much easier on the negative side. Let's discuss who needs to spend extra time working on their craft this week after this one. QB Carter Bradley Bradley signed with San Francisco at the end of July and was already battling the nepotism allegations, as his father, Gus Bradley, is on the 49ers coaching staff, and his performance in this game didn't help his case. Bradley completed just six of his 14 passes for just 32 yards and an interception. He finished the game with a horrendous 20.5 passer rating, which somehow wasn't the lowest on his own team (Tanner Mordecai earned an 18.8). There's a strong chance Bradley's gone before the 49ers step on the field for their next preseason bout. LB Nick Martin Martin, one of San Francisco's third-round draft picks this year, came into camp with some legitimate expectations. However, since then, he's clearly been left in the dust by Dee Winters. Then, in this game, he missed multiple tackles, which won't help him earn playing time any time soon. OL Spencer Burford Burford is entering his fourth season with the 49ers since they took him in the fourth round (No. 134 overall) of the 2022 NFL draft out of UTSA, where he was All-Conference twice. Now, he's holding down the role of Trent Williams' backup, which is extremely important, considering Williams' age. Burford, who is really better suited to play guard, started on Saturday, and he looked rough. On one series, he was responsible for multiple pressures and a sack against Broncos linebacker Nik Bonitto, who isn't exactly a world-beater. That's not the way to earn a role. GM John Lynch While Lynch wasn't on the field in this meeting, his fingerprints are all over the roster, which proved it's not deep enough to compete against backups, let alone starters if necessary. San Francisco's front office, led by Lynch, didn't do everything they could to improve their roster after an abysmal 6-11 campaign in 2024. That's why they still have $47.05 million in cap space, the third-most in the league behind the New England Patriots ($59.85 million) and Detroit Lions ($47.83 million), less than a month from the start of the regular season. There's still time to make some upgrades to their depth, but this needs to be a lesson to Lynch and article originally appeared on Niners Wire: Worst performances from 49ers sloppy preseason loss to Broncos

Kyle Shanahan reveals how wide receivers helped the 49ers find their new QB

The San Francisco 49ers announced a slew of Thursday roster moves. Quarterback Carter Bradley was among that group of Thursday signees. The 25-year-old is the son of Gus Bradley, who joined the franchise this offseason as the 49ers' assistant head coach of defense. Gus Bradley is the former head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars (2013-16) and has also had stops as the defensive coordinator in Seattle (2009-12), with the Los Angeles Chargers (2017-20), in Las Vegas (2021) and in Indianapolis (2022-24). After the 49ers announced the move to sign Bradley, San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan shared what sold the staff on inking the young signal-caller. "We had workouts yesterday with receivers and running backs and we brought him in to throw to them and he looked so good in the workout that made us go in and watch his clips. He had 38 passes last year and we really liked what we saw in his 38 passes. So, found a way to get him here," Shanahan said. With rookie quarterback Kurtis Rourke beginning training camp on the active/non-football injury list, the 49ers' quarterback room got a little thinner. Shanahan was asked if the franchise needed a fourth quarterback to join Brock Purdy, Mac Jones and Tanner Mordecai to help limit the wear and tear on each. "I don't think you need one. You always want one. We've got some roster issues, so we wouldn't do it unless we felt he had a legit shot. And we feel he does just watching him work out yesterday and watching his film, so that's why we made room for him," Shanahan said. Bradley arrives in Santa Clara after spending last season with the Las Vegas Raiders, primarily as a practice squad member. The 6-foot-3, 213-pound quarterback signed with the Raiders as an undrafted free agent on April 29, 2024. Bradley then signed to the team's practice squad on August 28, 2024. The Jacksonville, Fla., native was elevated to the Raiders' 53-man roster on a pair of occasions during the 2024 season as an emergency backup against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 8 and against Atlanta in Week 15. But, Bradley didn't play on either occasion. Bradley appeared in 46 games and completed 62.8% of his passes for 8,380 yards and 61 touchdowns at Toledo (2018-21) and South Alabama (2022-23). Gus Bradley's son joins 49ers, creating a unique father-son dynamic

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — As a longtime NFL coach, Gus Bradley rarely got the opportunity to watch his son, Carter, play football in person during his career in high school and college. Fall weekends were spent preparing his teams for games as either an assistant or head coach as Carter played quarterback in high school in Florida and then college at Toledo and South Alabama. Now the two are part of the same team after Carter Bradley signed a contract last week with San Francisco, where Gus is in his first season as a defensive assistant. "He's really excited. I can tell you that," Gus said Sunday. 'We haven't had much conversation. It's kind of been a whirlwind when that happened. But I know he's really excited to be here.' Gus Bradley said his relationship with Carter has always been more father-son than coach-player with the focus being more in life lessons such as how to respond to being cut than how to decipher a quarters defense. They had those types of conversations just after Carter was waived by the Raiders before the start of training camp. Gus got a heads up that the Niners planned to bring Carter in for a tryout last week, asking if he would be OK with it. 'I said, 'Yeah. But as far as you know, that's Carter Bradley and I'm Gus Bradley and we're separate,'" Gus said. 'You never want to put the organization in a tough position and that's not how this organization operates. It's too competitive. You only have so many roster spots.' Carter Bradley took part in the tryout with several other players last Wednesday. Gus and Carter talked briefly after the workout and Gus said goodbye before he headed into a meeting, figuring that Carter would be sent on a plane home right away. Gus came out of the meeting later that day and Carter was still at the facility waiting for word for what would come next. Carter got the news later that day that he had made the team. Coach Kyle Shanahan said Carter looked so good in the tryout and on a few dozen plays last preseason with Las Vegas that he earned the spot as the team's fourth QB. 'That's what I appreciate about them,' Gus said. 'It wasn't like 'Gus, hey we'll give you a heads up. Here's what we're going to do.' It was truly he's Carter Bradley, I'm over on the defensive side and we'll handle it that way.' Gus Bradley acknowledges he has more interest in Carter's performance than other offensive players but is able to compartmentalize it during practices when he is focused so intently on the defensive side of the ball. Sometimes it will take until film review later for him to see what Carter did on a certain play. 'I'm not going to lie. I'm still a parent, and he's here," Gus said. "But I thought it would be where you would be constantly looking. How's he doing? It it really is not that. It's Gus, where did that play hit. You can't watch what's happening on the offense and watch the whole defensive and do that.' Notes The Niners had the day off from practice headed into their first week with an exhibition game. San Francisco will practice on Monday and Tuesday and then take a day off before hosting a joint practice on Thursday against Denver. The teams will then play Saturday night. ... The 49ers signed WR Robbie Chosen and released WR Marquez Callaway. ___ AP NFL:
