Big Rock to give back to local charities with money raised at tournament
MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. (WNCT) — The Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament isn't just about fishing, but also about helping to raise money for local charities. Every year, the tournament brings in a huge economic impact, raising over $3 million to give back in just the last two years alone. The money raised goes to places like the Carteret Health Care Cancer Center, Carteret County Schools, Carteret Community Theater, Salvation Army, and much more. 'I would hope that people would kind of revel in the excitement of tournament week. Would be inspired perhaps to go online and order a T-shirt or a hat, knowing that in doing so they're contributing to monies that are going to flow out of the big rock tournament into our community,' Chairman of Big Rock Charity Committee Tommy Bennett said. 'You don't have to be a fisherman to participate in the big rock, and all of that just helps build those charitable contributions that we give away every year.' Official announcements of how much money is being donated this year and to which organizations will be made shortly after the summer. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Winter Hauntings event takes place at Crystal Coast
ATLANTIC BEACH, N.C. (WNCT) — Ghost stories and songs were just of the activities taking place Wednesday night at the Winter Hauntings event in Atlantic Beach. 'The top finalists are being performed tonight by actors from the theater, those are the three stories,' EPIC Carteret Producer Autumn Ware said. 'We have a haunted halftime act with Emily and John Carter and they perform original spooky songs and this year, the proceeds of all the ticket and alcohol sales will be going to the theater's renovation campaign.' The original theater building is still in need of being fully renovated back to normal after Hurricane Florence damaged it. Just a bit more than 100 tickets were bought for Wednesday night. 'Since then, we have been trying relentlessly to bring it back to life,' Business Manager for Carteret Community Theater Rebekah Brooks said. 'So far, with our ovation campaign, been able to start that process. By summer of 2025, we should have that building ready to go to, then outfit it with our sound, lights and our seats.' The crowd enjoyed various ghost stories which had local elements to each. 'There is one to read a story and then there is one way to 'read' a story. We are really making these ghost stories come alive.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
