Happy accident at store counter leads to big lottery win. ‘You must be kidding'
A happy accident at a store counter led to a Maryland man's big lottery win. The retired mechanic bought some scratch-offs at a gas station in Hagerstown, and then went back to the clerk for another one, Maryland Lottery officials said in an Aug. 7 news release. That's when the happy accident put the winning $50,000 Cash Blast ticket in the man's hands. 'The clerk was going to hand him a scratch-off out of the box, but there was an extra ticket that fell out after having been left loose by a previous transaction,' lottery officials said. The clerk gave the man the loose ticket, and he scratched it off, revealing a top prize. His wife scanned the ticket using the Maryland Lottery app to be sure. 'When I saw $50,000, I said, 'You must be kidding',' the man told lottery officials. He said he doesn't have specific plans for the windfall, although he and his wife may 'take more vacations' after the win, according to lottery officials. Hagerstown is about a 75-mile drive northwest from Baltimore.

Friend's advice leads Maryland woman to $50,000 lottery prize

File Photo by John Angelillo/UPI | License Photo July 11 (UPI) -- A Maryland woman took her friend's advice and bought a scratch-off lottery ticket that earned her a $50,000 prize. The Prince George's County woman told Maryland Lottery officials she mostly plays the Daily Pick games, but occasionally buys scratch-off tickets. She said a friend urged her to buy one of the newer scratch-off tickets from Simran Mart in Baltimore, so she selected four $5 Cash Blast tickets. "He watches the prizes remaining and knew all the top prizes were available. I'm so glad I listened to him," the player said of her friend. The player said she couldn't sleep after discovering one of her tickets was a $50,000 winner. "My stomach was in knots," she said. "I feel so overjoyed and overwhelmed." She shared her good news with her friend. "I sent a screenshot to my friend, so he could see his advice paid off," she said. "I said, 'How many zeroes do you see after the comma?'" The woman's friend accompanied her to claim her prize. "I always tell her to try to get the new ones," the friend said. "You'll have a better chance at finding the big ones."

After a Maryland woman scanned her lottery tickets, she couldn't sleep — but for a good reason. The human resources specialist was on her lunch break July 7 and stopped by a Baltimore convenience store, where she bought some lottery tickets per the suggestion of a friend, Maryland Lottery officials said in a July 11 news release. 'I always tell her to try to get the new ones,' the friend told lottery officials. 'You'll have a better chance at finding the big ones.' The woman, from Bowie, bought four $5 Cash Blast tickets, which went on sale in late June, lottery officials said. When she was home later that day, she scratched and scanned her tickets, lottery officials said. Upon scanning her fourth ticket, she realized she had won a $50,000 prize; a win that led to a sleepless night. 'My stomach was in knots,' she told lottery officials. 'I feel so overjoyed and overwhelmed.' The winner sent her friend a screenshot of the prize amount, 'so he could see his advice paid off,' she said. 'I said, 'How many zeroes do you see after the comma?'' the woman told lottery officials.

Dave purchased the winning ticket at Jefferson Woods Duchess #1201 in Newark, Ohio. The $2,000,000 Cash Blast is a $20 scratch-off with a top price of $2 million.
