AI robot pet hit in Japan as personalities vary based on upbringing
TOKYO (Kyodo) -- A fluffy robot pet equipped with artificial intelligence has proven to be a hit in Japan, as it develops its own personality and quirks depending on how it is "raised." Moflin by Casio Computer Co. demonstrates over 4 million distinctive personality traits, recognizing the person who talks to it frequently as its owner. It gradually learns what the owner likes based on interactions such as petting and cuddling. "Development began with women as our target audience. We imagined a sidekick that could provide support even when you're facing issues at work or in your personal life," said Erina Ichikawa, 42, the leader of the team that developed Moflin. The project gained momentum after an engineer from the company brought in a prototype robot for the purpose of portraying the cuteness of small animals. Casio, which launched the robots in November, exceeded its target and sold over 7,000 units by March. They are particularly popular among women in their late 30s and 40s, according to the company. Ichikawa notes how some people also bring them on excursions on days off. "People can feel that their Moflins are different from other Moflins, as the robots, like animals, display individual personalities and emotions, on top of growing and having varying sleep cycles," Ichikawa said. The robots are priced at 59,400 yen ($400). The company also provides add-on services, including a so-called salon that washes and cleans the robots' fur.

Casio to Release MR-G with Iconic Form Finished in Traditional Japanese Tsuiki Artistry
Limited Edition G-SHOCK of Only 500 Worldwide TOKYO, July 24, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Casio Computer Co., Ltd. announced today the release of a new MR-G timepiece, adding to the flagship line of the G-SHOCK brand of shock-resistant watches. The new MRG-B5000HT, featuring the iconic form of the G-SHOCK 5000 line and finished with the traditional Japanese tsuiki * hammering technique, is a timepiece of striking strength and stunning beauty. This very special timepiece is offered in a limited edition of only 500 pieces worldwide. The MRG-B5000HT inherits the iconic form of the first-ever G-SHOCK and takes on textural detail with bezel and bracelet individually hand-hammered by a tsuiki master craftsman, showcasing the profound beauty of the shock-resistant timepiece. The tsuiki -finished bezel and bracelet are made of DAT55G, a special titanium alloy developed in Japan that is three times harder than pure titanium. Individually hand-hammered by master tsuiki artisan Kazuya Watanabe, the incredibly detailed pattern, unique to each watch, is forged by the shape of the chisel tip and the force with which he wields his hammer. The case's oborogin color, the silver-gray with a unique luster of traditional sword fittings and ornaments, is achieved with diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating. The deep, shiny copper color of the screws and buttons add touches of glamor to the overall watch design. Combining design that highlights traditional Japanese aesthetics with outstanding toughness, this is a bold and powerful MR-G worthy of the G-SHOCK flagship line. Kazuya Watanabe Born in 1978 in Sanjo City, Niigata Prefecture. After graduating from the Department of Arts and Crafts Design at Nagaoka Institute of Design in 2001, Watanabe joined Gyokusendo, a historic copperware factory. There, he studied traditional techniques of hammering copperware before establishing his own forge in 2005. Engaging in collaborations that span a range of genres, Watanabe explores modes and possibilities of contemporary craftsmanship.

Casio to Release MR-G Inspired by the World's Largest Frog
Casio Computer Co., Ltd. announced today the release of a new MR-G timepiece, adding to the flagship line of the G-SHOCK brand of shock-resistant watches. The design of the new MRG-BF1000RG, the latest timepiece in the FROGMAN line of divers' watches, evokes the world's largest frog — the goliath frog. The FROGMAN shock-resistant diver's watch is known for its asymmetric design, crafted to allow unrestricted wrist movement underwater. The MRG-BF1000R, released in 2023, brought this unique form to life with a highly water-resistant titanium case. Its meticulous construction, including a polished finish down to the finest details, has earned it high praise. Building on the MRG-BF1000R, the new MRG-BF1000RG draws inspiration from the goliath frog — the world's largest frog — found in the tropical rainforests of West Africa. Its colors and design evoke a spirit of adventure, capturing the thrill of exploring untamed wilderness. The khaki band, inspired by the coloring on the back of the goliath frog, is made with a soft, highly flexible fluoro rubber material, ensuring a comfortable fit. The beige indexes, evoking the coloring on the frog's underside, are coated with Neobrite for excellent visibility even in low-light conditions. The titanium screw-lock case back is fitted with a sapphire crystal, finished with a vibrant green vapor deposition inspired by the eye of the Goliath frog, and maintains a highly water-resistant structure while preserving the built-in antenna's radio wave reception sensitivity. In dive mode, the hour and minute hands overlap to form a single hand, providing an intuitive, easy-to-read display of time spent underwater. Three dual-coil motors enable swift hand movement, allowing users to switch quickly from current time display to dive time display — making this a truly practical diver's watch.
