Florida State football's Thomas Castellanos refuses to back down from Alabama trash talk
The post Florida State football's Thomas Castellanos refuses to back down from Alabama trash talk appeared first on ClutchPoints. Florida State football's Thomas Castellanos refused to back down from his Alabama trash talk. The former Boston College standout is coming into Tallahassee looking to revive this historic program, which is coming off a dismal 2024 season. Head coach Mike Norvell was steadily rebuilding the Seminoles into a contender, culminating in a 2023 regular season that saw them go undefeated and win the ACC Championship. Unfortunately, the following year was a giant step in the wrong direction. Florida State football went 2-10 overall and won just one game in its conference. It all started in Week 1 when the preseason No. 10 team in the country suffered a surprising defeat to unranked Georgia Tech in Ireland. From there, the negative momentum just continued to pile on for the Seminoles, who struggled mightily at quarterback last year. Castellanos is looking to bring stability back under center for this program, and what better way to do it than with a statement win over Alabama. The Crimson Tide are also coming off a disappointing season by their standards and entering 2025 with firm College Football Playoff-or-bust expectations. The two traditional powerhouses will meet in Doak Campbell Stadium in front of a surely raucous crowd in Week 1. Castellanos is surely fired up for this matchup and has certainly talked the talk in the buildup. The Miami native was asked during ACC Media Days if he had any regrets over his past statements about the Crimson Tide and explained why he didn't, as well as his intention behind this trash talk. 'We stand on what I said. I said what I said, and we stand on that. I don't mean no disrespect to none of those guys at Alabama or anything like that. I have confidence in my guys and the work we've been putting in and preparing, and the preparation we've been putting together. That's all that was. No disrespect to those guys, but we stand on what I said…Them boys (Florida State football) are coming off 2-10; I just wanted to instill some confidence. I'm trying to get my boys ready to go. I'm trying to make it the biggest stage.' It's safe to say Castellanos' comments on Alabama will age either very well or very poorly on August 30. That being said, regardless of what happens, the dynamic quarterback is trying to change the culture in Tallahassee, which certainly took a hit in 2024. Norvell now has a lot of pressure going into this season, and his quarterback is surely embracing some of that now. The Seminoles do not have an easy schedule, with trips to Clemson and Florida later on, as well as a home game against Miami. However, this team will still surely have the talent to get over .500 again. And anything below that record would surely be considered another failed season under Norvell, who was doing so well with Florida State football up until last season. Giants' Jameis Winston doubles down on FSU QB's brutally honest Alabama take
The post Giants' Jameis Winston doubles down on FSU QB's brutally honest Alabama take appeared first on ClutchPoints. Jameis Winston is focused on solidifying himself as the No. 2 quarterback on the New York Giants' depth chart and potentially vaulting past starter Russell Wilson later this year, but he is still keeping up with what is happening in the college football world. He recently shared his thoughts on the strong comments that Florida State QB Thomas Castellanos made about Alabama football. The Boston College transfer is incredibly stoked for the team's season-opening meeting versus Bama, and he has not been shy about expressing his opinions. Castellanos said the Crimson Tide do not have legendary head coach Nick Saban to save them, and he does not think the defense will be able to stop him. Winston has a connection to both programs. The former No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick led the Seminoles to a national championship during the 2013-14 season. He was also born and raised in Alabama, residing roughly 40 minutes away from Tuscaloosa. He understands the passion that both fan bases have and is therefore in a unique position to weigh in on Castellanos' trash talk. Winston knows that Florida State's new starting signal-caller will ultimately have to back up his comments on the field, but he respects the fierce mentality that Castellanos has going into this important game and campaign. 'Actions speak louder than words,' the Heisman Trophy winner told WVUA 23 while hosting a youth football camp in his old stomping grounds, Hueytown High School, less than a week before Giants' training camp began. 'But what do you expect? Do you not want him to have that confidence? I want him to have that confidence. He should have that confidence. I know Alabama, I know everybody loves Alabama, especially being from this state, so I'm excited to see that matchup.' Florida State's QB is ready to compete in his new home Thomas Castellanos recently clarified his remarks, claiming that he holds no ill-will for the Crimson Tide roster. He is standing behind his words, however, motivated to spur Florida State to a huge victory in Tallahassee on Aug. 30. Furthermore, the 21-year-old insists that he just wanted to light a fire under the Seminoles, who endured one of their worst seasons in program history in 2024. Castellanos played a part in that anguish, as he and Boston College earned a rather dominant 28-13 road win over Mike Norvell's squad last September. Florida State finished the year with a humiliating 2-10 record, a jarring decline following a magnificent 13-1 showing in 2023. The campaign did not end so well for Castellanos, either. The dual-threat quarterback, who rushed for 1,113 yards as a sophomore, suffered a lower-body injury and proceeded to struggle. Eagles head coach Bill O'Brien benched him in November, paving the way for an eventual split. Castellanos took exception to how the whole situation unfolded and now joins Florida State football with a huge chip on his shoulder. After making overall strides as a passer — completed 61.5 percent of his throws for 1,366 yards and 18 touchdowns in eight games — Castellanos is eager to help the Seminoles bounce back and re-establish themselves as a force in the ACC. Prevailing over Alabama would certainly aid that cause. It would also draw more eyeballs to No. 1. Can Thomas Castellanos draw inspiration from Seminoles great Jameis Winston? Castellanos and all modern Florida State QBs are chasing the standard that Winston set more than a decade ago. Aside from the massive impact his statistical and team achievements had on the school and community, his big personality continues to resonate with young players and fans today. The 31-year-old has not enjoyed the NFL career he sought out to, but he still carries a steady presence in the league. Winston is particularly valuable as a leader, invigorating a locker room with infectious energy and intensity. The Giants signed him to a two-year, $8 million contract this offseason, recognizing the experience and zeal he can inject into a franchise that just lost a record-14 games. If Thomas Castellanos can find a balance between self-assurance and competent play, much like Jameis Winston has, then the Florida State roller coaster may be on the upswing in 2025. Phillies Trade Brewing? Hot Stove Heating Up Days Before Deadline
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Philadelphia Phillies have some big decisions to make this week. They have a few holes on the roster, and they're expected to use the trade block to fill the spots that need upgrading. The biggest holes on the Phillies' roster are in the outfield and the backend of their bullpen. There are plenty of options for the front office to look at, but they're going to need to cut ties with some talent in the process. FanSided's Christopher Kline recently suggested the Phillies could cut ties with outfielder Nick Castellanos ahead of the trade deadline, though it might not make the most sense. NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JULY 25: Nick Castellanos #8 of the Philadelphia Phillies in action against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium on July 25, 2025 in New York City. The Phillies defeated... NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JULY 25: Nick Castellanos #8 of the Philadelphia Phillies in action against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium on July 25, 2025 in New York City. The Phillies defeated the Yankees 12-5. More"Even if it's not the Royals, the idea of a Castellanos trade isn't too hard to wrap one's head around. He's under contract for $20 million next season, which is a hefty price tag, but Casty's a legitimate power source in the middle of a lineup," Kline wrote. "He's also a strong culture fit in any clubhouse, bringing a palpable energy that has made him beloved in Philadelphia. "From the Phillies' standpoint, trading their one good outfielder when improving outfield depth is a top priority on the trade deadline does not quite line up. But sometimes value is value, and getting off of Casty's money would allow Philadelphia to operate more aggressively in free agency — or even in separate trades at the deadline." Cutting ties with Castellanos would save some money, but the goal is to win a World Series, and he's been a valuable piece of the team. For this idea to make sense, the Phillies would need to land at least one outfielder in return. They're expected to be in the market to add at least one outfielder, so if they can pull that off, a deal involving Castellanos could make sense. At the end of the day, the outfield is a weakness. Trading away a productive outfielder would hurt the team, even if it saves money. More MLB: Yankees Rumors: New York Urged To Pursue Intra-Division Trade For Veteran Pitcher

ACC Kickoff: FSU QB Tommy Castellanos stands ‘on what I said' about Alabama
CHARLOTTE -- New Florida State quarterback Tommy Castellanos made the most of the talking season that is college football's summer tradition. In an interview with On3 in June, Castellanos talked boldly about FSU's season-opening matchup against Alabama, saying, "They don't have Nick Saban to save them. I just don't see them stopping me." Those strong words inspired some attention in Tuscaloosa and led to plenty of questions for the FSU quarterback Wednesday at ACC Kickoff ahead of the Aug. 30 matchup with the Crimson Tide in Tallahassee. "We stand on what I said," Castellanos said. "There's no disrespect (towards) that team or anything like that. It's just the confidence that I have in my teammates and the way we've been preparing and putting this preparation together this offseason." Castellanos transferred to FSU after spending the prior two seasons at Boston College. In 2023, the dual-threat QB was a sensation at BC with 2,248 passing yards, 1,113 rushing yards and 28 total touchdowns (15 passing, 13 rushing). In 2024, he didn't adapt especially well to a new offensive scheme and left the team midway through the season after he was removed as the starter. Now Castellanos is tasked with providing a spark to an FSU team that struggled mightily in 2024, limping to a 2-10 record that was the program's worst since 1974. "Being a part of Florida State is a dream come true," Castellanos said. --Miller Moss excited to start at Louisville after bowl breakout vs. Cardinals The best football game of Miller Moss' career to date was a Louisville game. He just happened to be playing for the other team. The then-USC quarterback made his first career start in the 2023 Holiday Bowl vs. Louisville, throwing for six touchdowns and 372 yards. Moss is expected to be Louisville's starting quarterback in 2025 after spending the past four seasons with the Trojans. "It's kind of a random coincidence or full-circle moment, whatever you want to call it," Moss said. "Fans will come up and say stuff to me (about the Holiday Bowl). I'll just let them know that we're going to make up for it this year." Moss got the first extensive playing time of his career in 2024, playing in nine games and throwing for 2,555 yards and 18 touchdowns. He'll now be tasked with following Tyler Shough, who was drafted 40th overall in this year's NFL draft by the New Orleans Saints after a one-year Louisville career. --Georgia Tech out for respect in the ACC Georgia Tech head coach Brent Key didn't beat around the bush. He believes his team has been underappreciated the last two years in the ACC. In Key's first full season at GT in 2023, the Yellow Jackets were picked 12th in the ACC and finished fourth. In 2024, they were picked ninth and finished tied for fourth. With quarterback Haynes King and running back Jamal Haynes back after strong 2024 seasons, that respect could come from ACC voters this year. Key knows that's not what matters at the end of the day. "We've got a great opportunity in front of us. We really do," Key said. "It's not about other people's expectations that matter. The only expectations that matter are ours." --Curt Weiler, Field Level Media Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved

Florida State quarterback comments on Alabama once again at 2025 ACC media days
The offseason talk between the Alabama Crimson Tide and Florida State Seminoles continues ahead of their Week 1 showdown in Tallahassee. Yes, on Wednesday at 2025 ACC football media days in Charlotte, North Carolina, Florida State quarterback Tommy Castellanos was asked once again about his previous comments from earlier this offseason. "We stand on what I said," Castellanos said at ACC media days. "But there's no disrespect between that team or anything like that. It's just the confidence that I have in my teammates and the way we've been preparing and putting this preparation together this off-season, I just feel confident in the guys and the work that we've been putting in." Castellanos' original comment on the Alabama vs. Florida State matchup came back in June, with the Florida State quarterback's quotes such as "they don't have Nick Saban to save them" making headlines. Those statements caught the attention of many across college football, which included some Alabama players such as linebacker Deontae Lawson, who commented on the quote recently at SEC media days. Alabama and Florida State are set to kickoff the 2025 college football season Saturday, Aug. 30 at 3:30 p.m. ET. The game will be played in Tallahassee, Florida on ABC.
