NBA Rising Stars: Spurs' Stephon Castle named MVP of showcase game
San Antonio Spurs rookie Stephon Castle on Friday was unanimously named the Most Valuable Player of the 2025 NBA Rising Stars Game after winning the championship in San Francisco, California. Castle produced 12 points, three rebounds and two assists to lead Team C to a 25-14 win over Team G League to claim the title for Hall of Fame coach Chris Mullin. The team won on a 3-pointer by Keyonte George, which was set up on a cross-court pass from Castle. Team C trailed 12-8 early but went on a timely run to down the team of G Leaguers coached by former nine-year veteran and champion Jeremy Lin. They finished the game on a 17-2 spurt, with Castle accounting for six points alone during that span. Hall of Famers Mitch Richmond and Tim Hardaway Sr. served as the other two honorary coaches and were in charge of drafting their respective teams. Team C defeated Team T 40-34 in the first matchup of the evening on a game-winning jump shot by Castle. George paced the group with 10 points in that contest, while Dalton Knecht had seven points and Castle added six points, four rebounds and four assists. Team C will now advance to play Sunday in the All-Star Game, which features a similar four-team, three-game tournament for the first time. They will face the team drafted by Shaquille O'Neal in the semifinal, headlined by LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant and James Harden, among others. They capitalized late after Team M went cold from the free-throw line with a chance to win, missing five consecutive attempts with 37 points. Overall, the group of the top players in the G League ran out of steam against Team C in the championship game. They impressed in spurts and looked like they belonged on a national stage against the top first- and second-year players the NBA had to offer. The score remained close throughout the game, with nine lead changes as neither team was ahead by more than four points. The team coached by Mitch Richmond had its opportunities to seal the win but went cold toward the end of the game. With 37 points on the scoreboard, they missed five straight free throws to allow Team G League to stay within striking distance and eventually win. Amen Thompson produced 11 points, two rebounds and two assists to lead Team M, Toumani Camara scored eight points and two rebounds and Bub Carrington had five points and four assists. Ausar Thompson, Bilal Coulibaly and Matas Buzelis each had four points and Julian Strawther added three points. Team C fell behind 19-7 early in the first game of the evening and could not recover from that deficit. They managed to cut the lead down to four points several times and had an opportunity late to get closer, but a turnover by Anthony Black led to the eventual game-winning shot by Stephon Castle. Gradey Dick led all scorers in the game with 12 points and one assist, while Tristan da Silva had five points and Zaccharie Risacher, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Black each added four points. Alexandre Sarr had three points and Brandin Podziemski rounded out the scoring with two points. NBA Rising Stars: Keyonte George spoils G-League party with dagger 3 to advance to Sunday's All-Star tourney against LeBron James, Stephen Curry
A team of G-Leaguers threatened to crash Sunday's NBA All-Star party from Friday's Rising Stars tournament, but Chris Mullins' team of NBA players ultimately prevailed. Team G-League, coached by Jeremy Lin, beat a team of young NBA stars coached by Mitch Richmond in the semifinals, then took a 12-8 lead against Mullins' team in the final, which was played to a target score of 25. But Mullins' team found its shooting stroke and rode a 17-2 run to a 25-14 win to advance to Sunday's All-Star tournament. Second-year Jazz guard Keyonte George capped the run and the win with a transition 3-pointer on a pass from Spurs rookie Stephon Castle. Candace Parker will take over to coach the team on Sunday against O'Neal's team featuring LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant. Sunday's four-team tournament will mirror Friday's Rising Stars showcase that crowned one team out of four from a three-game mini tournament. Friday's games featured three teams of first- and second-year NBA players and a fourth made up of players from the G-League, who pulled off a stunner in the semifinals. The three teams of NBA players were coached by the iconic former Warriors trio of Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond and Chris Mullin, who were collectively dubbed Run TMC during their late '80s and early '90s playing days together in Golden State. Their teams were appropriately named Team T, Team M and Team C. Former NBA guard Jeremy Lin coached Team G-League which advanced to the final on Friday by beating Richmond's Team M in the semifinals. Friday's semifinal games were played to a target score of 40 points, while the final was a sprint to 25. Team C's reward is a Sunday date with with a team dubbed Shaq's OGs featuring some of the best players of their era. Damian Lillard, James Harden, Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Kyrie Irving join James, Curry and Durant on Team Shaq. In the second semifinal, Team G-League shocked Richmond's team of NBA players in a 40-39 win to advance to the final. Team G-League opened a 20-16 lead, then rallied from a 36-33 deficit to score the win. Pistons rookie Ausar Thompson missed four free throws on two separate trips to the stripe with his team leading 37-35. The misses ultimately gave Team G-League a look at a game-winning 3, which Trail Blazers G-Leaguer Bryce McGowens hit despite shooting off-balance after getting Wizards rookie Bub Carrington to bite on a pump fake. George scored a team-high 10 points while hitting 2 of his 4 3-point attempts in Team C's 40-34 win. Castle sealed the win with a pull-up jumper from the elbow over rookie Wizards center Alex Sarr. NBA All-Star Weekend participants tracker: 3-point shootout, dunk contest, more
NBA All-Star Weekend will feature a host of events on Feb. 14-16 in San Francisco, beginning with the Rising Stars game on Friday and culminating with the All-Star Game on Sunday night. Last year in addition to the 3-point contest there was also a mixed 3-point competition featuring Golden State's Steph Curry against New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu, with Ionescu falling to Curry in a close match. The NBA has not yet confirmed whether there will be a rematch or some other version of the event in this year's festivities (though Caitlin Clark will not take part, if there is). Advertisement But what we do know is that players are beginning to commit to All-Star events, and we're keeping track of who will be involved. Their replacements: Orlando Magic rookie guard Anthony Black, Phoenix Suns sophomore forward Ryan Dunn, Portland Trail Blazers sophomore wing Toumani Camara and Detroit Pistons sophomore forward Ausar Thompson. This event will be a four-team mini-tournament featuring young NBA players and a collection of NBA G League standouts. NBA rookies and sophomores will be drafted onto three teams on Feb. 4, with the G Leaguers making up a fourth team. The G League team will include Reed Sheppard, who was the No. 3 pick in the 2024 draft by the Houston Rockets. Sheppard is averaging 30.7 points, 8.3 assists and 2.7 steals per game for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.
