All-Star forward breaks silence following shock intercounty departure
Tyrone's All-Star forward Cathal McShane has broken his silence after it was announced that he would be stepping away from intercounty football. The All-Ireland winner has been part of Tyrone's squad this season, featuring in their Ulster Championship win against Cavan but informed the panel that he would be stepping away ahead of the All-Ireland series. And McShane has taken to social media to speak publicly for the first time about his shock departure. Posting on X, he said: "Would like to thank everyone for their kind messages of support over the past week - hasn't gone unnoticed and means a lot. Time to take a break and reset - let's see what the future holds." The departure comes after McShane was left out of the panel for the Ulster semi-final loss to Tyrone but his experience will still be a big loss to the Tyrone camp. The Owenroes forward was the top scorer for the 2019 All-Ireland campaign, in which he won an All-Star. McShane suffered a serious ankle injury the following year but remained instrumental coming off the bench for Tyrone in their 2021 All-Ireland winning campaign.

McShane opts out of Tyrone panel ahead of All-Ireland SFC
Cathal McShane helped Tyrone lift the All-Ireland SFC title in 2021 but has now stepped away from the panel [Getty Images] Tyrone have been dealt a blow ahead of the beginning of the All-Ireland SFC as forward Cathal McShane has stepped away from the panel. McShane's last appearance for the Red Hands came last month as he was drafted into Malachy O'Rourke's starting 15 for their Ulster Championship opener against Cavan with Darragh Canavan ruled out through injury. The All-Ireland winning forward was not named in the matchday squad for Tyrone's semi-final defeat to Armagh as Canavan and Mark Bradley returned from injury. The Owen Roes attacker made just one National League appearance this season, coming off the bench to kick a point in Tyrone's defeat at Mayo in February. McShane made his inter-county debut a decade ago against Donegal in 2015 and throughout his time in red and white he picked up three Ulster SFC medals (2016, 2017 and 2021) alongside his All-Ireland SFC medal in 2021. McShane won an All-Star for his performances in 2019, finishing as the All-Ireland SFC's top scorer, kicking 3-48 in nine games. He suffered a serious ankle injury in a league game at Galway at the beginning of the 2020 season before returning to help Tyrone win the All-Ireland title in 2021, scoring goals off the bench in their semi-final win over Kerry and in the decider against Mayo. The 29-year-old's absence will prove a blow to O'Rourke and the wider Tyrone squad as they head into an All-Ireland round-robin series starting with a trip to the Ulster champions before hosting Mayo and taking on Cavan at a neutral venue.

Cathal McShane steps away from Tyrone panel ahead of All-Ireland SFC
All-Star forward Cathal McShane has stepped away from the Tyrone senior football panel ahead of the All-Ireland senior football championship campaign. McShane, as reported by the Irish News, notified his teammates and Tyrone boss Malachy O'Rourke on Tuesday night of his intention to depart the setup. The 29-year-old picked up three Ulster SFC medals, as well as an All-Ireland medal in 2021. The Owen Roes clubman has enjoyed multiple stints of success in the white and red of Tyrone, having made his debut against Donegal in the 2015 Ulster SFC. In the same year, under the guidance of Feargal Logan, Brian Dooher, and Peter Canavan, he helped Tyrone capture both Ulster and All-Ireland under-21 titles. 2019 was a particularly successful time on the pitch for McShane, in a personal sense. He earned an All-Star as his blistering form in front of goal, which saw him finish as the All-Ireland SFC's top scorer with 3-48, guided Tyrone to an All-Ireland semi-final before being narrowly defeated by Dublin. The following year, McShane suffered a serious ankle injury against Galway before returning to prove a decisive figure in their 2021 All-Ireland win under the aforementioned Dooher and Logan. He grabbed goals in both the semi-final win over Kerry and the final against Mayo. Last month, McShane made his final appearance for the Red Hands when he was selected in O'Rourke's starting 15 for their Ulster Championship opener against Cavan. However, he was left out of the matchday squad for their loss to Armagh as Mark Bradley and Darragh Canavan both made their injury comebacks. Throughout his senior inter-county career, he hit 8-156 in 106 Tyrone appearances.
