Guest acting Emmy odds: See how Kaitlyn Dever, Jeffrey Wright, Martin Scorsese, Bryan Cranston, and other hopefuls stack up

Last week, the four guest acting categories were added to Gold Derby's Emmy predictions center, and we now have a snapshot of the initial odds. For Best Drama Guest Actress, The Last of Us holds the top two spots with Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, a vengeful soldier in the zombie apocalypse, and Catherine O'Hara as Gail, a therapist who has a run-in with Pedro Pascal's Joel. Dever has yet to win an Emmy Award, while O'Hara is a two-time champion for starring on Schitt's Creek (2020) and for writing SCTV Network (1982). More from GoldDerby 'Your Friends and Neighbors' star Lena Hall on her emotionally raw Hole cover in the season finale: 'This is what I do' The entire 'Karate Kid' franchise, ranked (animated series included!) 'A supremely talented actor': Loretta Swit remembered by 'M*A*S*H' costars, including Alan Alda READ: For Best Drama Guest Actor, Jeffrey Wright is in the lead for playing Isaac on The Last of Us, the former FEDRA soldier in post-apocalypse Seattle who switches sides in explosive fashion. He previously won an Emmy for the HBO adaptation of Angels in America (2004). In second place is Shawn Hatosy, whose Dr. Abbott shares several memorable moments with Noah Wyle's Dr. "Robby" Robinavitch on The Pitt. READ: For Best Comedy Guest Actress, Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis is well-positioned to become just the third person ever to claim back-to-back Emmys in this category. She reprises her role as Donna Berzatto, the volatile mother of Carmy (Jeremy Allen White), Michael (Jon Bernthal), and Natalie (Abby Elliott) on the FX series. Meanwhile, Mare of Easttown Emmy winner Julianne Nicholson is hoping to win a bookend trophy for playing the fan-fave "Dance Mom" character on Hacks. READ: For Best Comedy Guest Actor, The Studio is expected to receive multiple nominations, with Bryan Cranston out front for playing unfiltered Continental CEO Griffin Mill. This would be Cranston's seventh career Emmy Award — he has four Best Drama Actor trophies for Breaking Bad and two for producing the two-time Best Drama Series champ. More The Studio guest actors to keep an eye on include Martin Scorsese and Ron Howard. READ: Below are the current Emmy predictions in 20 top categories, updated May 30. Dave Franco on Smoking With Bryan Cranston in ‘The Studio' Finale and Bringing ‘Toxic Positivity' to Every Scene

SPOILER ALERT: This story contains spoilers for the Season 1 finale of 'The Studio,' now streaming on Apple TV+. Months after filming his final scenes in 'The Studio,' guest star Dave Franco got a call from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg for a last minute idea that wound up featuring a 'Now You See Me' tie-in. More from Variety How 'The Studio' Composer Created 'Wall-to-Wall' Music and Set Out to Prove He Wasn't a 'One-Trick Pony' After 'Birdman' Catherine O'Hara on Her Scene-Stealing 'The Last of Us' Character, Why Pedro Pascal Is Like Meryl Streep and Catching COVID While Making 'The Studio' Zoë Kravitz on Getting High While Reading 'The Studio' Mushroom Scene and Why Getting Slapped by Kathryn Hahn Was 'The Honor of a Lifetime' 'They said: 'We have this idea where you give a recap of Episode 9 and you're totally fucked up, and we have to film this tomorrow. Are you in town? We're about to lock this cut,'' Franco recalls. 'I think it was just a genius idea rather than a dry, typical recap. There's something really fun about hearing what happened from the perspective of the most fucked-up person at the party.' The finale kicks off right where Episode 9 left off as the Continental Studio executives, as well as Patty Leigh (Catherine O'Hara), are left to clean up Matt's (Rogen) mess and get CinemaCon presenters Franco and Zoë Kravitz camera ready. But as the executives soon realize, Franco and Kravitz show no signs of slowing down. Franco came into the mix as the ensemble neared the end of a long shoot, along with two weeks on location in Las Vegas. 'Everyone was a little exhausted, a little loopy, and so we were leaning into that energy,' he tells Variety. 'I obviously wasn't there as long as everyone else, I just popped in for a handful of days, so I could come in with slightly fresh energy and try to infuse that into the scenes.' 'The Studio' is the latest Franco collaboration with Rogen and Goldberg — they go back all the way to 'Superbad' in 2007. 'They want it to be a group effort and their main rule is best idea wins, no matter who it's coming from. And I've adopted that mentality when directing my own movies,' Franco says. Below, Franco breaks down smoking with Bryan Cranston, filming that chaotic CinemaCon sequence with a live audience and how the 'Together' cast and crew 'killed ourselves every step of the way' to make that film a reality. It was a discovery process. Before my first scene in those final episodes, I was talking to Seth and Evan about how how fucked up I should be. We quickly realized that there's no limit, really. The crazier I am, the better. But the best thing to focus on is bringing this extreme positivity and optimism to every scene, which would juxtapose where everyone else in the episode is mentally. They are all completely stressed out and whenever you insert me a scene with this toxic positivity, it infuriates all of that. She's doing something that people haven't necessarily seen from her before, where she's just completely unhinged and having the time of her life and being as silly as possible. In that specific moment, she is terrified because she has taken way too many mushrooms, but my reaction is that I am so excited that someone is going to maybe be on the level where I'm at. Finding out that she is about to go flying makes me so happy because I'm going to have another partner-in-crime that night. For him to tap into his 'Malcolm in the Middle' roots where he is fully embracing his silliness and, like me, being as fucked up as he possibly can — it's always fun watching one of the greats be that unhinged. My wife and I's idea of a wild night is being in bed at 8 p.m. and watching a documentary with our two cats! In-between takes, I was trying to conserve my energy. Nicholas Stoller was there — I've known him a long time and adore him, and I remember him trying to riff with me between takes. And then after a few takes, he realized: 'Oh shit, Dave's exhausted. I'm going to let him be.' But it's just trying to find those moments to recharge during takes. That was all real. It was a real auditorium in Vegas and we had an audience. When you're doing that, it makes it so much easier because you feel their energy, you're performing to a real crowd. I think the challenge of that scene was going from being extremely delirious on multiple drugs and then turning on a dime and becoming my character from the Ron Howard movie, changing my accent and adopting this confidence in front of hundreds of audience members. When they were first applying the bloody makeup, we all decided that the more beat-up I looked, the funnier it would ultimately be because I still come in with this toxic positivity even though I just got my ass beat. That was fun to continue that level of optimism even when I'm moments away from going to the hospital. It's a difficult question to answer. Gosh, I mean, obviously Seth's character is dealing with wanting to create art that will last forever, that has integrity, but he's in a position where his studio also needs to make money and needs to think about the commerce of it all. So that's the struggle that he's dealing with and, when thinking about my personal approach to this job: I don't overthink it. I want to create projects that do feel unique, that feel like something we've never seen before and I know it's a little more difficult to get projects like that off the ground. Sometimes you have to make them on a very low budget and you're killing yourself to help them see the light of day, but that's the stuff that I really love. I've been fortunate to continue making things that I feel like are pushing boundaries. That's a very specific example of something where we killed ourselves every step of the way. Now that it's picking up a bit of traction, it's so gratifying to see that it is resonating. All the work was hopefully worth it. If anything, those final episodes are potentially reminding people that so many of us are doing this because we love movies. For me, my first job was at a mom-and-pop store when I was 14 years old, and it was actually illegal for me to be working there at that age, so they paid me by allowing me to take home as many movies as I wanted. That was my film school, that's how I started seeing all the classics and it's the reason why I'm doing any of this. I didn't start acting until I was maybe 18 or 19, and it wasn't even necessarily something that I loved at first, but I figured this was a potential way into the industry and to be a part of it all. I feel so fortunate that I'm able to dip into all different sides of it now with directing, writing and producing. This interview has been edited and condensed. The Last Of Us stars Gabriel Luna and Catherine O'Hara recreate adorable throwback shot

The Last Of Us is the show on everyone's lips at the moment, and two of its stars, Gabriel Luna and Catherine O'Hara, took the opportunity to recreate an old photo of themselves. The original image dates back 16 years ago, when the pair starred in another HBO production, a movie called Temple Grandin which was shot in Texas. While Luna also appeared in the first season of the hit series, an adaptation of the massively popular Naughty Dog video game, the Schitt's Creek star has only joined in season two as a character created specifically for the show. Catherine O'Hara as Gail in The Last Of Us. Pic: HBO The 42-year-old plays Tommy in The Last Of Us, one of the leaders of the safehaven, Jackson, who is also the brother of Joel (played by Pedro Pascal). Catherine plays a therapist in the town called Gail, who has taken Joel on as a client, but it is revealed that he shot her husband Eugene, who we haven't met in the show so far, and as a result, their relationship is a tense one. I've had the privilege of working with Catherine O'Hara twice. The first time was 16 years ago on a HBO movie called Temple Grandin in Austin TX. I was on for only a day and she made me feel like a regular. 'Flash forward to our first day together on The Last of Us and I asked her and our make up department head, Rebecca, to help me recreate the photograph we took back in day. Came out pretty good. Matter of fact, that goes for the guy in the first slide too.' As there are many new cast members this season, when chatting to Luna about The Last Of Us, asked him if he had any advice for them. Gabriel Luna as Tommy in The Last Of Us. Pic: HBO Just as Tommy is seen as one of the leaders of Jackson, so is Luna seen as a senior member of the team, and he shared that he didn't in terms advise in terms of how to do their jobs, but he has been bringing them to some of his favourite spots while on the press tour. He said: 'No, I didn't. They're already so talented and came in well prepared, so I didn't say much at work. On this press tour, though, I felt really happy to have been able to share a few things that I had found in my previous trips to these various places. 'We've hung out together a lot, and we have this little family. We eat together, and we do breakfast… we just kind of sit down and download the previous day, but come up with little plans. I took Isabela out to Sacre Coeur, to the market, and we bought her mother some music boxes.'

Seth Rogen And Catherine O'Hara Take On Hollywood In ‘The Studio'

Catherine O'Hara and Seth Rogen in the new Apple TV+ series "The Studio" On March 26, the much-anticipated new comedy series The Studio arrives on Apple TV+. Starring and co-created by Seth Rogen, along with Catherine O'Hara, Ike Barinholtz, Chase Sui Wonders and Kathryn Hahn, The Studio is a hilarious and refreshingly original concept that showcases the inner-workings of 'the Hollywood machine' and the business dealings between big stars, iconic filmmakers and the studio executives striving for blockbuster success. Rogen plays Matt Remick, a newly appointed 'top dog' at a legacy movie studio, who wants to bring more grounded and deeper storytelling to the screen, but is consistently faced with other creative demands and financial pressures all around him. Seth Rogen and Ron Howard in the new Apple TV+ series" The Studio" Sitting down with Rogen, I wondered what it was about this Hollywood industry story that felt like this is something that not only entertainment professionals will appreciate, but the public at large will also find amusing. Rogen said, 'I mean, I knew it was sort of incumbent on us, as the writers, to translate what we find interesting about this to the public at large. I found that the more personal place we start from, often the funnier it all is. We really just want to make something that reflected our experiences in Hollywood: our frustrations, our concerns, the things we love, the things that inspire us. Then, it was really about just making sure every episode had a clear comedic idea, that was very relatable and understandable, as a joke premise that was tied into this like bigger picture we were trying to show, you know?' In The Studio, O'Hara plays executive Patty Leigh, Matt's colleague and his previous superior. Best known for her memorable roles in Home Alone, Beetlejuice, the many Christopher Guest comedies and as the beloved Moira Rose in Schitt's Creek, what exactly was it about O'Hara's new The Studio character that made her want to be the actor to take this on next? Seth Rogen and Catherine O'Hara in the new Apple TV+ series "The Studio" O'Hara said, 'It was Seth and [co-creator] Evan [Goldberg] talking me into it. Very, very persuasive. They made it sound like it was going to be so good and so fun and so informative. They describe great characters. Then, the scripts came in and they were great - really funny. I've never played, I don't think, someone like this in this kind of power position, who loses it right away.' Barinholtz plays Sal Saperstein, Matt's best friend and his colleague at the studio, who is often put in uncomfortable situations to do Matt's 'dirty work' for him. Being a seasoned comedy actor, I was curious what it was about Barinholtz's The Studio character that perhaps allowed him to 'flex' a different acting muscle from his previous roles. Ike Barinholtz, Kathryn Hahn, Seth Rogen and Chase Sui Wonders in the new Apple TV+ series "The ... [+] Studio" Barinholtz said, 'I think there was something very fun for me about playing that character in this kind of modern setting - in a position of power - where there's a lot more scrutiny for guys like him now. I just thought it was fun to kind of take that 'bull in a China shop,' who back in the day would say whatever he wanted - and now, he still does but he just does it a little bit quieter.' Known previously for her performance in the 2022 horror-comedy Bodies Bodies Bodies, Sui Wonders plays Quinn Hackett in The Studio, Matt's right-hand woman, who is often a voice of reason for the new studio executive, yet her contributions do not always go as well as intended. So, how did working alongside her co-stars on this series help elevate her own on-screen performance? Sui Wonders said, 'I think part of the way into the season, everyone around me - Seth and Evan - they kind of like tapped into a bit of a freak within. Letting that sort of fly and allowing me to be a bit strange and weird is something that I hadn't really done on-camera before, but definitely exists in my personal life. So, that was really freeing and liberating. It's always cool when you feel safe enough to be able to do a Tracy Morgan impression.' Risk more and do something good. Don't just constantly disappoint yourself and others.' Seth Rogen in the new Apple TV+ series "The Studio" Sui Wonders said with Quinn in mind, 'Try not to take too much advantage of your identity politics because it seems to lead to hot water.' O'Hara said of Patty, 'I'd say you are amazing. You have great ideas, so F-them! F-them, those weasels.'
