Seth Rogen, Catherine O'Hara among Canadians earning multiple Emmy nominations

Catherine O'Hara, a cast member in "The Studio," arrives at the premiere of the Apple TV+ series on Monday, March 24, 2025, at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles. THE CANADIAN PRESS/AP-Chris Pizzello Seth Rogen and Catherine O'Hara are among the Canadians racking up multiple Emmy nominations this year. Both received nods for Rogen's Apple TV Plus cringe comedy 'The Studio,' which broke records Tuesday with 23 Emmy nominations — the most ever for a comedy series in its first season. That beats the record set in 2021 by 'Ted Lasso,' also from Apple, which scored 20 nominations in its debut year. Rogen earned nominations for best lead actor in a comedy series, best directing and best writing. The satire stars the B.C. native as the boss of a struggling Hollywood studio, juggling corporate pressures with his dream of making genuinely good movies. Toronto's O'Hara, meanwhile, earned two nominations — one as best supporting actress in 'The Studio,' and another for a guest role in HBO zombie drama 'The Last of Us.' Rogen will compete in the lead actor category against Martin Short, who snagged a nomination for his role in 'Only Murders in the Building.' The Hamilton, Ont. native plays frazzled theatre director Oliver Putnam in the Hulu comedy, starring opposite Steve Martin and Selena Gomez. This is the fourth time he's received an Emmy nod for the role. Quebec City's Jessica Lee Gagné collected two nominations for her work on Apple TV Plus' series 'Severance,' which has a leading 27 nominations. Gagné is up for best cinematography for an hour-long series, and best directing for a drama series. The Apple TV Plus thriller revolves around employees at enigmatic company Lumon Industries who undergo a procedure splitting their consciousness between their work selves and personal lives. Gagné directed the episode 'Chikhai Bardo,' in which the show's lead character Mark, played by Adam Scott, drifts in and out of disorienting memories of his late wife, Gemma, whose mysterious connection to Lumon lies at the heart of the show's larger conspiracy. Meanwhile, Toronto-born 'Saturday Night Live' boss Lorne Michaels received six nominations for several incarnations of the sketch comedy series, including best writing for a variety series and best scripted variety series for NBC's 'Saturday Night Live.' 'SNL50: The Anniversary Special' is also in the running for best writing for a variety special and best live variety special. Michaels also scored nominations for best live variety special for Peacock's 'SNL50: The Homecoming Concert' and best emerging media program for Meta Quest's 'SNL 50th The Anniversary Special: Immersive Experience.' Other Canadian nominees include Graham Yost, who earned a nod for best drama series as executive producer of spy thriller 'Slow Horses,' and comic Robby Hoffman, who's competing for outstanding guest actress in a comedy for her breakout role as an office manager in 'Hacks.' The 77th Emmy Awards will broadcast live from Los Angeles on CTV on Sept. 14. Alex Nino Gheciu, The Canadian Press

Apple TV Renews The Studio for a Second Season

The Franchise on HBO may have been cancelled after one season, but the Hollywood satire series The Studio starring Seth Rogen seems to be doing very well for Apple TV. Just in, Apple has announced that they would be renewing The Studio for a second season. Here's the official post: Hollywood loves a sequel. #TheStudio will return for Season 2. — Apple TV (@AppleTV) May 6, 2025 Take note, the first season isn't even done yet, and we're expecting a total of 10 episodes out of Season One. We don't know exactly where they plan to end, but with Hollywood chugging along for as long as it has, they probably have a lot of ideas to get from. As for the series itself, the story focuses on Matt Remnick (Rogen) who is tasked to run a prestige Hollywood Studio. He has high hopes to create prestige movies that also make a lot of money, but that's easier said than done. Besides Rogen, the series has an all-star cast which includes the likes of Catherine O'Hara, Ike Barinholtz, and Kathryn Hahn. The show has also managed to get some great cameos from Hollywood icons like Bryan Cranston, Ice Cube, and even Martin Scorsese himself. As someone who was all-in on The Franchise , I'm kind of bummed that this series would get to go on despite having the same premise. But I do admit, The Studio has a more general-audience friendly sense of humor, unlike The Franchise which has its very specific brand of dryness. I think it's still worth checking out though. Catch new episodes of The Studio now available on Apple TV+ every Wednesday.

Apple Renews Seth Rogen's Hilarious Hollywood Satire Series THE STUDIO for Season 2 — GeekTyrant

Apple TV+ has officially renewed The Studio for a second season, ahead of its Season 1 finale set to air on May 21. This is one of my favorite shows to watch right now! I'm loving it. The sharp, satirical, and hilariious comedy was co-created by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, with Rogen starring as Matt Remick, the new head of Continental Studios. The show digs into the absurdity of the movie industry as Remick tries to survive the egos, chaos, and artistic pretensions that come with making everything from prestige dramas to tentpole blockbusters like a Kool-Aid Man movie. In a statement Rogen and Goldberg said: 'We're looking forward to taking the lived experience of making season one and immediately putting it into season two, then repeating that loop for ten more seasons.' Created by Rogen, Goldberg, Frida Perez, Peter Huyck, and Alex Gregory, the show boasts a stellar ensemble cast. Bryan Cranston plays Remick's intimidating, old-school boss Griffin Mill. Catherine O'Hara plays Patty Leigh, the studio's former head turned producer. Ike Barinholtz plays Sal Saperstein, an exec-turned-Golden Globe darling. And Kathryn Hahn takes on the role of Maya Mason, the no-nonsense head of marketing. Rounding out the regular cast is Chase Sui Wonders as junior exec Queen Hackett. Season 1 has been a who's-who of cameos and industry meta-nods. Martin Scorsese, Charlize Theron, Sarah Polley, Greta Lee, Anthony Mackie, Dave Franco, Ron Howard, Olivia Wilde, Zac Efron, and Ice Cube all show up playing themselves. Even Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos makes an appearance. Throughout the season, Remick juggles the chaos of trying to greenlight a Spike Jonze satire, a Smile -style horror flick titled Wink, a Sarah Polley-directed romance, and a Ron Howard project, while also managing the sheer weirdness of turning a corporate mascot like the Kool-Aid Man into a movie icon. Apple's head of programming Matt Cherniss shared his excitement: 'Seth, Evan, the entire creative team and cast of The Studio have knocked it out of the park with this brilliant show, and it has been incredible to watch the conversation grow with each new episode. 'We can't wait to see where Matt Remick takes Continental Studios in season two, and hope for his sake that the Kool-Aid movie crushes at the box office.' Rogen and Goldberg added, 'We're excited to keep all our industry friends and colleagues guessing as to when one of their personal stories will stream on Apple TV+.' It's great to hear that we are getting a second season, and I'm excited to see what kind of Hollywood chaos is going to be thrown at us!
