NYPD divers back in water searching for teen who jumped off Staten Island Ferry
Divers continued their search Monday for Brandon Pino, the high school senior who jumped off the Staten Island Ferry over the weekend, police said. NYPD crews resumed their search for Brandon and for a second teen, a 15-year-old girl feared drowned in the East River under the Roosevelt Bridge after she fell from the rocks about 12:15 p.m. Friday, a police spokesperson said. Meanwhile, Brandon's desperate family visited an NYPD stationhouse Monday and spoke to a detective there, hoping for updates but receiving none. They have also visited and called local hospitals, hoping the teen might turn up alive there. The 17-year-old Port Richmond boy left a goodbye note on Instagram before taking the 9:30 a.m. ferry from Staten Island to Manhattan Saturday, his family says. His eldest sister, Cathleen, 27, says the family is hoping public attention might lead to Brandon's recovery. They're holding out hope he survived because of a radio transmission that 'stated he was seen swimming' after jumping from the boat. 'We are continuing to do our own search by checking all the nearby water borders, Battery Park, Brooklyn Pier, including Governor's Island,' she said. She is hoping the coverage of the search for Brandon also brings more awareness to mental health issues. Brandon's sister said 'everything seemed normal' in the days leading up to when her brother jumped. 'He was getting ready to go to college. He was going to his graduation practice,' she said. Brandon, a senior at Gaynor McCown Expeditionary Learning School on Staten Island, lives with his mother and two older sisters. His friends told his family he'd been happy at school in recent days and he was focus on his fitness and cooking healthy food. ' He was a straight-A student,' his sister said. 'He always did his chores at home, always respectful. He would help with our niece and nephews. My sister, she also has two kids, and he would try to spend time with them. And this just came so unexpected to us.' The morning he jumped, he sent a group of friends increasingly alarming text messages, his sister said. 'In one of those messages he wishes his friends a farewell, telling them to stay true to themselves and that he loves them,' she said. 'And then he sent a picture that he was on the ferry, on the outer part of the ferry, looking towards the water.' He told his friends that he was going to jump off the boat. 'He did joke about it a few times — laughing, jokingly — so they didn't know if it was serious this time,' Cathleen said. 'But then two minutes after, he leaves his friends on read.' One of his pals called him four times, but Brandon left his backpack and phone behind when he jumped, his sister said. 'By that time it was already too late,' she said. For those contemplating suicide, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is reachable 24/7 at (800) 273-8255. They can also call 311 or 911 for help. Missing Teen's Family Believes He Leaped from Staten Island Ferry After Leaving a Note
Family said Brandon Pino, 17, disappeared after he jumped from a Staten Island Ferry vessel on May 31 A police spokesperson tells PEOPLE that crews responded to 'a 911 call for a water rescue in the vicinity of the Staten Island Ferry Whitehall Terminal' just before 10 a.m. local time His sister said her brother was texting a group of friends before the incident occurredA missing 17-year-old boy's family says he leapt from the Staten Island Ferry and had left a note beforehand. Police said Brandon Pino has been missing since he jumped from the boat around 9:45 a.m. local time on Saturday, May 31, as the vessel neared Manhattan, according to the New York Daily News. Police responded to 'a 911 call for a water rescue in the vicinity of the Staten Island Ferry Whitehall Terminal' just before 10 a.m. local time on Saturday, the New York Police Department's Deputy Commissioner of Public Information (DCPI) shared in a statement obtained by PEOPLE. 'Officers from the 1st Precinct, along with the NYPD's Harbor Unit, SCUBA team, Emergency Services Unit and Aviation responded to the scene and are currently canvassing the waterway and shoreline,' the spokesperson said. Cathleen Pino, Brandon's 27-year-old sister, told the Daily News that her brother had posted a message on Instagram before jumping into the water. Brandon, who lived in Port Richmond, had gone to his uncle's house on Staten Island around 7 a.m. on Saturday, then went to the St. George Ferry Terminal, Cathleen said. She added that her brother did not tell anyone of his plans. Cathleen claimed her brother, who was a senior at Gaynor McCown Expeditionary Learning School in New Springville, was texting a group of concerned friends shortly before he jumped. 'His friends told me that they had seen that he was [happier] than usual at school lately,' Cathleen told the paper. 'It seems very odd because he was being himself, which was eating, cooking for himself, cooking his healthy food, going to the gym, going to school early, being there for his graduation practice.' Cathleen said a witness informed the ferry's crew about the incident as the boat docked, according to the Daily News. ITV Emmerdale's John Sugden's next victim 'confirmed' in chilling murder twist
Emmerdale fans were left fearing for Cathleen, who demanded that John Sugden leave Aaron Dingle and go to the hospital after her son woke up. Emmerdale 's recent episode, which aired on Monday, May 27, was packed with drama as John Sugden and Aaron Dingle's wedding saga got underway. Fans will recall that Aaron is still unaware of the heinous acts committed by his soon-to-be husband John. These include last year's murder of Nate Robinson and the subsequent hiding of his body in the lake, framing Ella Forster by terrorising Chas Dingle. He further left fans furious masterminding the slurry leak at Butlers Farm to implicate Mack Boyd, and the truth about his comatose ex-partner Aidan Moore. In the week ahead on the ITV soap, there's set to be more drama as the wedding unfolds. However Monday's episode already had mounting tension for the couple. In the latest episode, it was the wedding day and John was haunted by nightmares of being apprehended for Nate's murder while he and sister Victoria Sugden were getting ready for his nuptials with Aaron, reports Leicestershire Live. However, John's anxiety escalated when he overheard Cain Dingle mention that the dredging in the lake where he disposed of Nate's body had commenced due to the farm 's slurry leak, which he orchestrated. John decided to make a run for it from the village but was caught packing by Aaron, who reassured him it was nothing but the usual and expected pre-wedding nerves. Once Aaron left, John attempted to leave again, stopping by the lake where he overheard that the dredging had been called off. With the realisation that his secret was safe for the time being, John confirmed he would proceed with the wedding. The drama escalated up a notch in the latest episode when Cathleen, Aidan's mother, made a sudden appearance with earth-shattering news, her son had emerged from his coma and was calling for John, insisting they rush to the hospital at once. However, Cathleen was left astonished to discover that John had moved on with his life and was poised to wed another after a mere three years. She expressed her disbelief, stating: "The first thing Aidan said when he woke up was your name, it's you he needs!". To reinforce her point she declared, "So I am going to stand here making all the noise I want until you do the decent thing and help my boy..." leaving viewers on a knife-edge as chilling music marked the end of the episode. Soap fans took to Twitter following the episode, buzzing with theories that John might be brewing another sinister plot, potentially targeting Cathleen next. Tweets flooded in with predictions such as: "I think he'll bump her off", while others chimed in with "She be the next one in the lake" and "I reckon he will kill her", leading another viewer to ominously suggest, "His next victim.."

European Capital of Culture 2025: Chemnitz relies on citizen participation
ADVERTISEMENT There is a major city in Eastern Germany that many Europeans have never heard of: Chemnitz. Now Chemnitz is a European Capital of Culture. This has surprised many people. Loss of industry, emigration, an ageing population, right-wing extremism... Chemnitz has many problems. As a Capital of Culture, the city is now looking for its strengths. Under the GDR regime, Chemnitz was renamed Karl-Marx-Stadt. Today, the city with a long industrial history has its old name back. The Chemnitz Capital of Culture theme: 'C the unseen!' What is a "Capital of Culture"? 40 years ago an idea originated in Greece: Each year, a "European City of Culture" is elected. The initial priority was to safeguard the common cultural heritage: The title was awarded to cities with a lot of ancient culture, such as Athens, Paris, Amsterdam and Florence. However, that has changed since Glasgow 1990: Today, the priorities also include urban development, citizen participation and cultural diversity. More and more cities with economic and social problems are submitting bids. The title "Capital of Culture" is intended to help start a new beginning. The European Union supports the transformation process with funding. Chemnitz won the title for 2025 - together with Nova Gorica in Slovenia and Gorizia in Italy. Sophie and Cathleen are two of over a thousand volunteers for Capital of Culture Chemnitz. "There are a lot of people who complain," remarks Sophie, "who say that nothing will change here anyway. But that's precisely where you have to step in and say: Of course you can change something, by lending a hand yourself.' One third of Chemnitzers are over 60. Sophie helps with the 'Dancing Neighbours' project. Alexandra Takats heads "Team Generation" as project manager. The Capital of Culture organisers strive to engage all strata of the population - whether young or old, born in Chemnitz or elsewhere: "We have many socio-cultural projects where the aim is to bring neighbourhoods together, so that newcomers with a migration background can mix with people who have lived here for a long time.' You have to look at this in the context of the 2018 riots. Chemnitz made headlines back then. After a fatal stabbing, a right-wing extremist mob beat up people that looked foreign. The ultra-right scene is still present in the region today. Chemnitz is also a stronghold of the AfD - a Eurosceptic party with a strong following - and a critical attitude towards the Capital of Culture project. AfD city councillor Ronny Licht: "Chemnitz is a divided city: The suggestion is that 'the bad guys' on the right fringe are not part of society. Then people keep talking about a 'civil society' that must become loud. That doesn't unite, it divides.' The organisers of the Capital of Culture see things differently. Project Manager Capacity Building, Pascal Anselmi: "If you try to get actively involved in your neighbourhood, that's culture for me. The will to move something, to change something, to create something new. Don't be passive - instead say: This is my city, I get involved, I participate. And that, of course, is democracy in the best sense of the word.' This is also the view of sociologist Ulf Bohmann from Chemnitz University of Technology: "The Chemnitz Capital of Culture bid has a clear focus on social issues. This can really change the city in the long term - through working together. Culture can be used to try out democratic coexistence and make people more resistant to right-wing extremism.' One of the most important Capital of Culture projects is called "Living Neighbourhood". There are festivals in garages and parks, money for community projects where people can redesign their neighbourhoods according to their own ideas... The Chemnitz cultural recipe is simple: Get close to people, join in - and discover culture in everyday life.
