Police said Brandon Pino has been missing since he jumped from the boat around 9:45 a.m. local time on Saturday, May 31, as the vessel neared Manhattan, according to the New York Daily News.
Police responded to 'a 911 call for a water rescue in the vicinity of the Staten Island Ferry Whitehall Terminal' just before 10 a.m. local time on Saturday, the New York Police Department's Deputy Commissioner of Public Information (DCPI) shared in a statement obtained by PEOPLE.
'Officers from the 1st Precinct, along with the NYPD's Harbor Unit, SCUBA team, Emergency Services Unit and Aviation responded to the scene and are currently canvassing the waterway and shoreline,' the spokesperson said.
Cathleen Pino, Brandon's 27-year-old sister, told the Daily News that her brother had posted a message on Instagram before jumping into the water.
Brandon, who lived in Port Richmond, had gone to his uncle's house on Staten Island around 7 a.m. on Saturday, then went to the St. George Ferry Terminal, Cathleen said. She added that her brother did not tell anyone of his plans.
Cathleen claimed her brother, who was a senior at Gaynor McCown Expeditionary Learning School in New Springville, was texting a group of concerned friends shortly before he jumped.
'His friends told me that they had seen that he was [happier] than usual at school lately,' Cathleen told the paper. 'It seems very odd because he was being himself, which was eating, cooking for himself, cooking his healthy food, going to the gym, going to school early, being there for his graduation practice.'
Cathleen said a witness informed the ferry's crew about the incident as the boat docked, according to the Daily News.

Family members are doing their own search, according to Cathleen, who also said she has not received an update from authorities.
Cathleen said members of her family, especially her mother, hope to recover Brandon's body in order to 'to get some type of closure.'
An investigation into the incident is ongoing, the DCPI spokesperson tells PEOPLE.

The video circulated after a landslide at a limestone mine in Mount Kuda in Cirebon on May 30 that local media outlet reported killed 21 people and left four missing (archived link). The company overseeing the mine was operating legally, but safety standards were lacking, according to West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi, who said he had ordered its closure (archived link). Similar posts purportedly showing the landslide were also shared on Facebook, TikTok and X. The video, however, does not show the May 30 landslide. A combination of reverse image searches using keyframes from the falsely shared video and keyword searches on Google led to the same footage published on June 20, 2023 by an Instagram account that shares information about West Java (archived link). "These are the seconds before rockfall occurred in Mount Kuda, Bobos Village, Dukupuntang District, Cirebon Regency, on Monday (June 19, 2023). There were no fatalities in this incident," reads its Indonesian-language caption. The footage was also used by local media outlet Tribun Jateng and Dutch digital media company KameraOne in June 2023 (archived here and here). According to local media platform Kumparan, the landslide was caused by heavy rainfall and an undercutting mining method (archived link). No fatalities were recorded. Skydiving Plane Carrying 20 People Crashes in Tennessee
A small plane used for skydiving crashed near Tullahoma Regional Airport in Tennessee on June 8 Twenty people were on the plane, and no casualties have been reported, a spokesperson for the city of Tullahoma told PEOPLE 'There are some minor injuries. "There are some minor injuries. The scene is being secured by local authorities while FAA officials are en route to continue the investigation." The Tennessee Highway Patrol said on social media that several of those people were airlifted to nearby hospitals and that the plane landed near the town's Old Shelbyville Road. 'Three were sent for medical treatment via helicopter and one sent by ground transport for more serious injuries to local hospitals," Russell said. "Other minor injuries were treated by first responders on scene.' 'The plane involved was a skydiving plane, a DeHaviland DH-6 Twin Otter,' Russell added. National Guard Arrives in Los Angeles Following Protests Over Immigration Raids
National Guard troops deployed by President Donald Trump arrived in Los Angeles Sunday morning after two days of street clashes between law enforcement and protesters demonstrating against Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials' raids of local businesses. Immigration and Custom Enforcement, which is part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, led Friday's operation, targeting at least one business in the L.A. Fashion District, Ambiance Apparel. Other companies including Home Depot were also impacted. The detainment of dozens of workers sparked a series of protests in Los Angeles. One by one, they were interviewing us in the back. They were getting our information…needing our IDs and taking pictures of each one of us.' A U.S. citizen by birth, the employee was released by ICE at the establishment, he said. A media request to ICE had not been acknowledged Sunday afternoon. Asked about the status of the dozens who had been detained after Friday's raid in the fashion district, a public affairs representative for the Department of Homeland Security referenced a press release about ICE's Los Angeles operation, (which was not restricted to the L.A. Fashion District). The release identified 11 individuals ranging in age from 26 to 55 who have been arrested and are said to have criminal histories.
