Missing Teen's Family Believes He Leaped from Staten Island Ferry After Leaving a Note

Family said Brandon Pino, 17, disappeared after he jumped from a Staten Island Ferry vessel on May 31 A police spokesperson tells PEOPLE that crews responded to 'a 911 call for a water rescue in the vicinity of the Staten Island Ferry Whitehall Terminal' just before 10 a.m. local time His sister said her brother was texting a group of friends before the incident occurredA missing 17-year-old boy's family says he leapt from the Staten Island Ferry and had left a note beforehand. Police said Brandon Pino has been missing since he jumped from the boat around 9:45 a.m. local time on Saturday, May 31, as the vessel neared Manhattan, according to the New York Daily News. Police responded to 'a 911 call for a water rescue in the vicinity of the Staten Island Ferry Whitehall Terminal' just before 10 a.m. local time on Saturday, the New York Police Department's Deputy Commissioner of Public Information (DCPI) shared in a statement obtained by PEOPLE. 'Officers from the 1st Precinct, along with the NYPD's Harbor Unit, SCUBA team, Emergency Services Unit and Aviation responded to the scene and are currently canvassing the waterway and shoreline,' the spokesperson said. Cathleen Pino, Brandon's 27-year-old sister, told the Daily News that her brother had posted a message on Instagram before jumping into the water. Brandon, who lived in Port Richmond, had gone to his uncle's house on Staten Island around 7 a.m. on Saturday, then went to the St. George Ferry Terminal, Cathleen said. She added that her brother did not tell anyone of his plans. Cathleen claimed her brother, who was a senior at Gaynor McCown Expeditionary Learning School in New Springville, was texting a group of concerned friends shortly before he jumped. 'His friends told me that they had seen that he was [happier] than usual at school lately,' Cathleen told the paper. 'It seems very odd because he was being himself, which was eating, cooking for himself, cooking his healthy food, going to the gym, going to school early, being there for his graduation practice.' Cathleen said a witness informed the ferry's crew about the incident as the boat docked, according to the Daily News. Brutal video shows masked thugs stomping on off-duty NYPD cop's face in brazen robbery

Brutal video shows the moment two masked thugs pinned an off-duty NYPD cop to the ground at knifepoint in the Bronx — and then savagely stomped on his face. The shocking caught-on-camera assault unfolded on St. Peter's Ave. in Westchester Square after the two goons zeroed in on the officer just after 4 a.m. on Saturday, police said. Surveillance video captured the pair approaching the cop on the sidewalk and immediately throwing him to the ground next to a huge pile of trash. Surveillance video showed two masked thugs pinning an off-duty NYPD cop to the ground at knifepoint in the Bronx — and then savagely stomping on his face. DCPI One of the alleged attackers could then be seen holding a blade to the officer's neck as the other rifled through the victim's pockets. Before fleeing, the suspects pummeled the officer multiple times in the face and booted him in the head. The alleged crooks made off with the officer's Glock 19 9mm service weapon and various other belongings, police said. The off-duty cop suffered multiple facial fractures in the assault. The injured cop — who hasn't been identified publicly — suffered a broken cheekbone and fractured eye socket in the attack, sources said. The sick footage emerged after the NYPD identified 23-year-old Taveon Hargrove as a person of interest in the assault. 'Two individuals viciously attacked an off-duty NYPD officer,' the department said on X on Sunday. 'They forced him to the ground, struck him in the face, held a knife to his throat, and stole his belongings, including his firearm.' Cops have since nabbed Hargrove's father for allegedly using the cop's stolen credit card at several Bronx bodegas, law enforcement sources said. The second goon hasn't yet been identified and police are still trying to track them down.

Two Arrested for Kidnapping and Torturing Crypto Business Partner—Police

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Two suspects have been arrested and charged in connection with the kidnapping and torture of a cryptocurrency business partner in a SoHo luxury apartment in New York City, according to the New York City Police Department (NYPD) and local media reports. Why It Matters This case highlights the growing intersection between cryptocurrency wealth and violent crime, as digital assets become increasingly valuable targets for extortion schemes. The incident occurred in one of Manhattan's most upscale neighborhoods, raising concerns about how cryptocurrency-related crimes are evolving and the extreme measures perpetrators will employ to access digital wallets worth millions. What To Know In an email response to Newsweek on Saturday afternoon, a NYPD deputy commissioner public information (DCPI) spokesperson confirmed that on Friday at approximately 9:30 a.m. local time, in the vicinity of Mulberry and Prince streets, a 28-year-old male victim approached an on-duty traffic agent and stated he had been kidnapped and held against his will in a nearby apartment since May 6. The alleged victim further stated he had been routinely assaulted during his captivity. John Woeltz, 37, was charged with two counts of second-degree assault and one count each of first-degree kidnapping, first-degree unlawful imprisonment, and criminal possession of a firearm, according to DCPI. Beatrice Folchi, 24, of Manhattan, was charged with kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment, though the Manhattan district attorney's office declined to prosecute Folchi at the time, "pending further investigation," according to CBS News. Police say a third male suspect remains at large. Investigators say the group allegedly lured the former business partner back from Italy to access his cryptocurrency account and then kidnapped and tortured him for weeks. Police discovered the suspects had documented their crimes, with officers locating a number of Polaroid photographs showing the victim tied up with electrical wire and tortured. One of the images allegedly showed the victim having a gun pointed at his head. The alleged victim told police that Woeltz and another person beat him, used electric shock and hanged him off a ledge after he refused to provide his Bitcoin password. Police sources also learned that at one point during his ordeal, the victim's kidnappers are alleged to have threatened to cut off his legs with a chainsaw. Additionally, Woeltz allegedly forced the victim to take cocaine and subjected him to various forms of psychological torture. He even tied an Apple AirTag around the victim's neck to keep a check of where he was in the building where he had limited movement. Authorities said the victim was able to escape from the apartment after Woeltz allegedly suggested it would be his death day. Woeltz, a crypto entrepreneur, was taken into custody barefoot and in a bathrobe on Friday. Police said the 8-bedroom, 10-bathroom home was rented for $30,000 to $40,000 a month and was rented just a couple of months ago, with the most recent listing price at $75,000 per month. Woeltz was ordered held without bail during his Saturday morning arraignment in criminal court. Police tape secures a crime scene outside a club after a shooting in Brooklyn on October 12, 2019. JOHANNES EISELE/AFP via Getty Images What People Are Saying A witness, Molli Sramowicz, told CBS News: "We saw police running this way and then there was just a lot of screaming. Police with their guns out, then the SWAT team came in, then a fire truck." Local vendor Ciaran Tully, who worked near the building where the alleged crime took place, told Eyewitness News: "I've seen people go in and out all the time and never really ever saw the same person twice. So, we were wondering like what was going on in there?" What Happens Next The unidentified victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, according to DCPI. Detectives are interviewing two butlers who were at the home and worked for the suspect. A gun was recovered in the home, and police have requested additional search warrants for a more comprehensive investigation.

Lorde Plays ‘What Was That' for Fans in NYC After Cops Shut Down Earlier Gathering

Lorde texted her fans to meet her 'in the park' on Tuesday and those who figured it out headed to New York's Washington Square Park in droves. The nearly 10-acre park in Lower Manhattan was swarmed with hoards of people as the star stood over the crowd and blasted her new single 'What Was That' from speakers. Wearing jeans and a bikini under a white shirt, Lorde danced to the lyrics: 'Since l was seventeen, I gave you everything/Now, we wake from a dream/Well, baby, what was that?' Fans cheered on the singer as they recorded the impromptu moment. More from Rolling Stone Lorde Unleashes New Era With Hypnotic Synth-Pop Stunner 'What Was That' Lorde Says Her New Era Will Change Everything: 'This Is Gonna Be Crazy, You Have No Idea' Lorde Really Likes This Fancy Water Bottle An earlier gathering was shut down by park rangers and local police, who reportedly told those gathered that the event was cancelled. Around that same time, Lorde took to Instagram stories to address the situation, writing: 'Omg @thepark the cops are shutting us down I am truly Amazed by how many of you showed up !!!' The singer-songwriter added: 'But they're telling me you gotta disperse … I'm so sorry.' In a statement, a DCPI Spokesperson, said that 'officers were alerted of an unscheduled event inside of the park' at around 6:47 p.m. on Tuesday. 'A sound and parks permit is required to have a concert in a New York City Park,' the statement continued. 'This individual did not possess either. Organizers of the event were informed they could not perform and they left the location.' The DCPI did not identify the individual as the Grammy winner. Earlier this month, Lorde teased 'What Was That' with her first-ever TikTok video. In the video, she is seen walking through the same park, listening to a preview of the single. She has since announced that she'll be releasing the debut single off her fourth album on April 25. In lieu of her newsletter as a means of updating her fans, Lorde has been connecting with her followers via text. She released a voice memo after appearing at Coachella to perform 'Girl, so confusing' with Charli XCX. In it, she talked about the performance and previewed her new era a little more. 'I just wanted to say hi because everything is about to change and these are really the last moments where it's just us, which is crazy but so right,' Lorde said. 'I'm so ready. I didn't know if I'd ever be able to say that, but I am. I'm so thankful for your patience. I've felt your love, I've felt you right there. This is gonna be crazy, you have no idea.' The audio notes seem to be part of a quicker, off-the-cuff way Lorde wants to communicate new music to her audience. 'I'm in the zone, not wanting to think too hard about how to communicate,' Lorde said. 'I don't want to be stressing about capturing the moment with the right language. What if it's just about saying it, maybe getting it wrong, and that being okay?' This article was updated on April 22 at 9:28 p.m. ET to include news of Lorde's appearance at Washington Square Park in NYC.
