RTE announces Cathy Halloran's replacement as midwest correspondent
RTE has announced Petula Martyn as their new Mid West correspondent, replacing Cathy Halloran. Petula will be reporting and providing analysis across RTE News platforms on social, economic, cultural and political developments across the midwest region, including the counties of Limerick, Clare and north Tipperary. She will take up her new role this autumn. Petula said: "Having grown up, studied, and started my journalism career in the region, I am delighted to return to take up the role of Mid West Correspondent. "I'm looking forward to covering the stories that matter to the people of Limerick, Clare and north Tipperary, including challenges in healthcare, housing, infrastructure, as well as cultural events and no doubt, sporting triumphs. "I am honoured to have been given the opportunity to continue the great work that Cathy Halloran did for over 30 years. "I care deeply about this region and its people, and I'm committed to telling their stories with integrity and dedication, as a consistent and trusted voice for RTÉ News." Petula joined RTÉ News in 2011 and has worked as a multimedia journalist across television, radio and online platforms. She currently presents business news on Morning Ireland, the One O'Clock News, and Drivetime, regularly interviewing senior business leaders, economists and policymakers. She has also presented some of RTÉ's flagship radio programmes including Morning Ireland, This Week and The Business, as well as coverage of political party conferences and for RTÉ Sport during the Olympic Games. A passionate Limerick hurling supporter, Petula reported on Limerick's All-Ireland successes, including an RTÉ Radio One documentary, Limerick: Pure Proud, which captured the joy and pride of a county renowned for its love of sport. She has also reported on general elections from the midwest, as well as the election and inauguration of the first directly elected mayor. Petula began her journalism career in the region, reporting for Limerick's Live 95FM and later as a journalist with the Limerick Leader. CANCER HELL After her exit, Cathy opened up on her devastating illness as she was Thankfully, Cathy and Nicky have been given the all-clear and are now in remission. Speaking about her health, Cathy told RTE Guide: "If you are diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, it focuses the mind. Advertisement "I feel good now. I don't feel 64, more like early 50s. And apart from the cancer diagnosis, I've been healthy. "Time is the most precious thing and with my leaving of RTE, I'm no longer tied to the tyranny of time, deadline after deadline. RTÉ news correspondent signs off after 38 years
RTÉ's Mid West Correspondent, Cathy Halloran, has announced her retirement after 38 years with the national broadcaster. The Dubliner has worked with RTÉ News for almost four decades, with 31 years spent as the Mid-West Correspondent. Ms Halloran went on to thank the thousands of people she'd met and interviewed, adding that it had 'been a privilege' A number of the reporter's colleagues were among the first to congratulate Ms Halloran on her lengthy career, with Teresa Mannion writing: 'Going out on such a high. You'll be sorely missed, Cathy, but this is your time in the sun. Legendary sports reporter Marty Morrissey added: 'What a journalist, broadcaster, colleague and friend. Cathy, you are a Legend! Thank you for always being so kind and giving me your Camera Crew when I needed them.' She later moved to the Connacht Tribune newspaper in Co Galway. In 1987, she moved back to the capital to begin working with RTÉ News, reporting for television and radio on a wide range of stories, including the Tribunal of Inquiry into the Beef Industry at Dublin Castle from 1990. Ms Halloran was later appointed as the Midwest Correspondent in 1993, a position she has held for 31 years. Speaking to RTÉ recently about her retirement, Ms Halloran paid tribute to her colleagues in what she branded a 'very competitive' region. Ms Halloran thanked the thousands of people she'd met and interviewed, adding that it had 'been a privilege' Pic: Cathy Halloran / X She added that her colleagues and friends had been 'great supporters' of her career and work. 'But most of all, it's the people and communities of the Midwest who have allowed me into their homes and their hearts to let me tell their stories around the issues that were of concern and mattered to them,' she told the national broadcaster. 'That has been a great joy and privilege, and I will miss it hugely.' It is understood that Ms Halloran is looking forward to a 'gentler pace of life' as she signs off for the final time. Ms Halloran resides in Limerick City with her partner Nicky Woulfe and son John Michael.
