Karnataka seeks Rs 1.5 lakh crore Central aid for Bengaluru's global city transformation
BENGALURU: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Sunday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide Rs 1.5 lakh crore in central funding for a series of infrastructure projects aimed at transforming Bengaluru into a global city. In a letter submitted to the Prime Minister, who was in Bengaluru to inaugurate the Namma Metro's Yellow Line and other projects, Shivakumar cited the city's role as India's technology hub and second-largest tax contributor, while highlighting urgent challenges from rapid urbanisation, including traffic congestion, water scarcity, and waste management. The proposed projects include two urban tunnels and elevated corridors on erstwhile national highways (Rs 41,780 crore), arterial road corridors (Rs 15,000 crore), the Rs 27,000 crore Peripheral Ring Road, four integrated solid waste management plants (Rs 3,200 crore), and metro extensions covering 128 km. The Deputy Chief Minister also sought the Centre's support for the construction of double-decker elevated roads along upcoming metro viaducts (Rs 28,916 crore), 300 km of roads along stormwater drains (Rs 3,000 crore), and the sixth phase of the Cauvery Water Supply Scheme (Rs 6,939 crore). Shivakumar further proposed the introduction of a Rapid Rail Transit System for four corridors around Bengaluru, modelled on the Delhi–Meerut network, to link satellite towns and ease urban congestion. He appealed for funding on par with Delhi to ensure sustainable infrastructure, economic growth, and an improved quality of life for over 12 million residents.

Deputy Chief Minister Shivakumar seeks ₹1.5 lakh crore Central aid for upgrading Bengaluru infrastructure
Amid the much-awaited inauguration of Namma Metro's Yellow Line by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, and Bengaluru Development Minister, has made a pitch for massive Central assistance to overhaul the city's infrastructure. In a formal letter to the Prime Minister, Mr. Shivakumar requested funding to the tune of ₹1.5 lakh crore for a series of large-scale, high-priority projects. Emphasising Bengaluru's role as India's technology capital and the nation's second-largest tax contributor, he pointed out to the urgent need to address mounting urban pressures, such as severe traffic congestion, depleting water resources, and inadequate waste management systems. A major component of the proposal is the creation of five semi-high-speed Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridors, modelled on the Delhi–Meerut 'Namo Bharat' network. The suggested routes include Bengaluru–Bidadi–Mysuru, Bengaluru–Harohalli–Kanakapura, Bengaluru–Nelamangala–Tumakuru, Bengaluru–Airport–Chickballapur, and Bengaluru–Hoskote–Kolar. Other big-ticket initiatives outlined in the letter include the construction of two urban tunnels and elevated corridors along former national highways at a cost of ₹41,780 crore, development of arterial road corridors at ₹15,000 crore, the long-pending Peripheral Ring Road project at ₹27,000 crore, and four integrated solid waste management plants at ₹3,200 crore. The State also plans to expand the Namma Metro network by an additional 128 km under Phases 3 and 3A, introducing five new corridors. Further, it has proposed the creation of more than 40 km of double-decker elevated roads similar to the Silk Board–Ragigudda stretch on routes, such as J.P. Nagar–Hebbal and Hosahalli–Kadabagere, at a cost of ₹8,916 crore. Additional demands include building 300 km of roads along stormwater drains at a cost of ₹3,000 crore and implementing the sixth stage of the Cauvery Water Supply Scheme at ₹6,939 crore. Mr. Shivakumar appealed to the Centre to extend funding on par with the support provided to Delhi, arguing that such assistance is crucial to ensuring sustainable growth, enhancing Bengaluru's liveability, and maintaining its global competitiveness. 'We request the Union government to extend funding support to Bengaluru on par with Delhi, enabling the city to emerge as a global city,' he stated in the letter.

By 2028, all 3.5 lakh houses in 110 villages to get water line: BWSSB
BENGALURU: Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) chairman Ram Prasat Manohar said that the board has given sanitary and water supply connections to one lakh of the 3.5 lakh houses in 110 new villages brought under BBMP limits in 2008. He told TNIE that delimitation of wards under Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) will not impact BWSSB services in these villages. 'BWSSB has to provide water and sanitary connections to 3.5 lakh houses in 110 villages. By 2028, all 3.5 lakh houses will have sanitary and water connections,' he said. These villages will get safe drinking water under the Cauvery Water Supply Scheme. This project will address water scarcity in 110 villages. Around 1.7 million people will be benefitted by this scheme, a senior BWSSB engineer, Cauvery Stage V, said. The board has built a ground level reservoir (GLR) at Kudlu near Electronics City to supply water to the villages brought under Bommanahalli BBMP zone. Another such reservoir has been built at Jambu Savari Gudda in HSR Layout to supply water to the villages included in RR Nagar zone. The board has constructed a ground level reservoir at GKVK to provide water to the villages brought under Yelahanka zone. The board has built a reservoir and booster pumping station at B Narayanapura and another reservoir at OMBR Layout to supply water to the villages in Horamavu, Hennur, KR Puram and Kadugodi under Mahadevapura zone. On complaints of frequent disruption in water supply and contamination of water by residents of Babusa Palya, Prashanth Layout and Ramamurthy Nagar, the board officials blamed Bescom and telecom service providers for these issues. BWSSB pipelines have been damaged by these service providers.
