Ex-Malaysian PM Ismail Sabri's family hit by scandal as former son-in-law declared bankrupt
The bankruptcy of high-profile fashion designer Jovian Mandagie, the former son-in-law of Malaysia 's ex-prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob , has brought renewed attention to the growing scandals surrounding the former leader's family. Jovian, once a household name in Malaysian and Indonesian fashion circles, was declared bankrupt by the Kuala Lumpur High Court on Thursday for failing to repay a US$1.25 million loan to an engineering firm. The court ruling comes amid ongoing investigations by anti-corruption authorities into Ismail Sabri over alleged embezzlement of public funds during his time in office. Now 39, Jovian gained local prominence in part through his marriage to Ismail Sabri's daughter, Nina. The couple divorced in August 2023, less than a year after Ismail Sabri stepped down from office following a brief 15-month tenure. The loan dispute stems from a verbal agreement with Cekap Air Sdn Bhd, which described the money as a 'friendly loan' given informally due to personal ties. The company told the court that it initially had no reason to question Jovian's credibility, considering he owned several businesses. But his financial woes had already surfaced in other arenas. Another firm had previously sued him for failing to pay around 5 million ringgit (US$1.18 million) for branded face masks produced during the Covid-19 pandemic , as he had attempted to shift his apparel label toward the production of personal protective equipment.

Fashion designer Jovian Mandagie declared bankrupt in RM5.28m loan case
KUALA LUMPUR: Fashion designer Datuk Jovian Mandagie has been declared bankrupt by the High Court for failing to settle a RM5.28 million loan, including interest, owed to engineering firm Cekap Air Sdn Bhd. The decision was delivered by Senior Assistant Registrar Muhammad Faisal Zulkifli following a creditor's petition filed on November 20, 2024. Cekap Air's lawyer, Siti Nur Athirazati Rohizad, confirmed that her client had issued a bankruptcy notice on May 21, 2024, after Mandagie failed to comply with a direct judgment issued by the court on April 2 the same year. 'The court has dismissed all applications by Jovian to strike out the bankruptcy proceedings,' she said. The dispute stems from a friendly loan extended to Mandagie in February 2022, based on his verbal agreement with Cekap Air director Yong Zhen Wei. The RM5 million was transferred to Mandagie's law firm's client account, with repayment expected within 12 months. However, the fashion designer allegedly defaulted, prompting legal action. Mandagie had filed a defence statement on June 20, 2023, but the court ruled in favour of Cekap Air, ordering repayment. An appeal is scheduled for September 15 at the Court of Appeal in Putrajaya. - Bernama

According to Berita Harian, senior assistant registrar Faisal Zulkifli today allowed a creditor's petition filed by Cekap Air Sdn Bhd. Based on the petition, filed on Nov 20 last year, Jovian, the former son-in-law of ex-prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, failed to comply with a bankruptcy notice dated May 21, 2024. The petition stated that Jovian owed Cekap Air RM5,284,340.66, including interest up to May 21, 2024, following a summary judgment granted by the High Court on April 2 the same year in a civil suit. Cekap Air's lawyer, Siti Nur Athirazatti Rohizad, said the company filed the bankruptcy notice after Jovian failed to comply with the summary judgment issued by the court. 'Jovian filed applications to stay and set aside both the notice and petition, but all were dismissed by the court,' she said. On May 16, 2023, Cekap Air filed a lawsuit against Jovian for allegedly failing to repay the loan, which had been extended as a friendly loan. In its statement of claim, the company said that Jovian was an acquaintance of Cekap Air's director, Yong Zhen Wei. The company claimed it loaned Jovian the funds at his verbal request on Feb 25, 2022, and transferred the money to his law firm's client's account. Jovian's appeal against the summary judgment is scheduled to be heard on Sept 15. Jovian was questioned by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission in its probe into Ismail's asset declaration. Court declares fashion designer Jovian Mandagie bankrupt after failing to repay RM5.3m verbal loan to construction firm
KUALA LUMPUR, July 3 – Fashion designer Datuk Jovian Mandagie has reportedly been declared bankrupt by the High Court here for failing to repay a RM5 million loan to a construction company. The Star reported that the court granted the bankruptcy order after Cekap Air Sdn Bhd filed a creditor's petition over Jovian's failure to settle RM5,284,340.66, including interest, for a loan given in 2022. 'Jovian did file several applications to stay and strike out the bankruptcy notice and petition that was filed against him but they were dismissed by the court,' said the company's lawyer, Siti Nur Athirazatti Rohizad. Cekap Air claimed the loan was extended verbally on February 25, 2022, based on a personal acquaintance between its director Yong Zhen Wei and Jovian, with the expectation that it would be repaid within 12 months. 'Furthermore, there was no reason for the plaintiff (Cekap Air) to doubt the defendant (Jovian) as the latter had several other businesses and was the [then] son-in-law of the former prime minister,' the company said in its statement of claim. Jovian was married to Nina Ismail Sabri, daughter of former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, on December 11, 2013, but the couple divorced in 2024. The company alleged that Jovian failed, refused, or neglected to repay the loan, resulting in financial losses and unjust enrichment. A summary judgment was issued by the High Court on April 2, 2024, ordering Jovian to repay the amount, but he did not comply. The bankruptcy petition followed Jovian's failure to honour the court's judgment, according to court documents. His appeal against the summary judgment is scheduled to be heard at the Court of Appeal on September 15.

[UPDATED]: High Court declares Jovian bankrupt after loan dispute
KUALA LUMPUR: Fashion designer Datuk Jovian Mandagie was today declared bankrupt by the High Court (Insolvency Division) for failing to repay a "friendly loan" amounting to RM5.28 million to an engineering and construction company. Senior assistant registrar Muhammad Faisal Zulkifli made the ruling during proceedings today after allowing a creditor's petition filed by Cekap Air Sdn Bhd on Nov 20 last year. According to the petition, Jovian, the former son-in-law of former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, had committed an act of bankruptcy within six months prior to the filing of the petition by failing to comply with a bankruptcy notice dated May 21, 2023. The petition said that Jovian owed Cekap Air RM5,284,340.66, inclusive of interest as of May 21 last year, which was the sum payable under a summary judgment granted by the High Court on April 2, 2023. Cekap Air's lawyer, Siti Nur Athirazatti Rohizad, said the bankruptcy notice was filed after Jovian failed to comply with the terms of the summary judgment. A summary judgment is a legal application filed by the plaintiff to obtain a court order without the need for a full trial. She said that upon receiving leave to issue the bankruptcy notice, her client filed the creditor's petition, which the court allowed today. "Jovian had filed applications to set aside and stay the bankruptcy notice and the creditor's petition, but all were dismissed by the court," she said. On April 2 last year, the High Court ordered Jovian to repay RM5 million to Cekap Air after allowing the company's summary judgment application. On May 16, 2023, the company filed a lawsuit against Jovian, alleging that he had failed to repay a RM5 million loan extended on a friendly basis. In its statement of claim, Cekap Air said Jovian was an acquaintance of its director, Yong Zhen Wei. The company claimed it loaned RM5 million to Jovian following a verbal request by the designer on Feb 25, 2022, and subsequently transferred the amount into the client account of a law firm representing him. Cekap Air added that the law firm had confirmed receipt of the funds on Jovian's instruction. Jovian's appeal against the summary judgment in the main suit is scheduled to be heard on Sept 15.
