Darley Street Market's public square to host Yorkshire Day event

DARLEY Street Market's City Square will host a Yorkshire Day event on Friday. The Women of West Yorkshire will 'celebrate the strength, diversity and creativity of women and allies across our region.' Running from noon to 3pm in the public square, the event will be co-chaired by the Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin, and Inclusivity Champion, Fatima Khan-Shah. People are welcome to come along, and drop-in and out throughout the day. The outdoor celebration will bring together performances, family activities, inspiring voices, and a marketplace full of local makers, artists and community services. Highlights of the programme include poems from two of the West Yorkshire Young Poet Laureates; music from a South Asian women's choir; a piece performed by Emily Kent of Mesh Dance; and a Caribbean Big Drum performance by Shaping Care Kirklees. There will also be a short talk from Cath Ward - Yorkshire historian and YouTuber; music from Ruby Macintosh; and The Bradford Belles will return after appearing at the Market's opening weekend with another great performance. Other activities taking place include face painting; a craft corner where you can create your own peg doll of a woman who inspires you; a story corner with books featuring strong, fearless female characters; storytelling sessions at 12.30pm and 2pm and activities for all ages. Councillor Alex Ross-Shaw, Bradford Council's Executive Member for Regeneration, Planning and Transport said: 'We're honoured to have this festival use the Courtyard area of our fabulous new market on Yorkshire Day. Bradford and Ilkley are the official hosts for Yorkshire Day this year and this is just one of lots of events taking place to celebrate.' Held on August 1 every year and led by the Yorkshire Society, Yorkshire Day celebrates the county's heritage, history, landscape, culture, and its people, and this year Bradford and Ilkley are the hosts. A large civic event will take place on Friday in Ilkley with Mayors and Lord Mayors from across the county. This will be followed by Yorkshire Calling which is taking place at Bradford Live in the evening 7.30pm and the Monsters of Yorkshire Rock event at Nightrain in Bradford city centre. The celebrations for Yorkshire Day will continue into the weekend with events taking place across the district including events at Bolling Hall, Bradford Industrial Museum as well as events in Baildon and Keighley.
