Pakistan-Türkiye relations ‘sweeter than Pakistani mangoes': Dr Sangu

KARACHI: Relations between Pakistan and Türkiye are sweeter than Pakistani mangoes, higher than K2 and deeper than oceans, said Dr Cemal Sangu while addressing a gathering organized at the Pakistan Institute of International Affairs (PIIA) here on Saturday. Speaking on the history of the Turkish language, he said Turkic languages are spoken across a vast geography from East to West, including many dialects in Southeast Europe, and are among the most spoken language families in the world. Turkish, he noted, is a very old language with origins traced back 880 years, belonging to the Ural-Altaic family, and is considered highly suitable for computers and science. Turkish, Dr Sangu added, has no noun classes or grammatical gender, making it non-discriminatory, and is mathematical, logical, and scientific with minimal exceptions. He recalled that Kasgarli Mahmud wrote the 'Divanü Lügati't-Türk' in 1072 and that one of the first Turkish newspapers was published in Crimea. He highlighted that Turkish is spoken by ethnic Turks in Iran, Syria, Greece, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Kosovo, Albania, Eastern Europe, Russia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and China, and that Turkish civilization is among the three oldest surviving in the world. Referring to bilateral ties, Dr Sangu said the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Pakistan was celebrated three years ago. While diplomatic relations began in 1947, brotherly ties date back centuries, rooted in shared religion, culture, and language, transcending political changes. He described the relationship as 'one nation, two countries.' On the impact of Turkic rulers on the Subcontinent, he said they influenced the socio-cultural fabric through administrative practices, language, religion, and architecture. They introduced innovations in governance, education, military organization, and infrastructure, while also patronizing art, architecture, literature, and religion. He noted their economic and judicial reforms, based on Islamic law, ensured minority rights were protected. Dr Sangu cited the Shah Jahan Mosque in Thatta, with its elaborate tile work and geometric brickwork, as a reflection of Turkish architectural influence. He also mentioned the Makli Necropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which includes tombs from the Tarkhan, Arghun, and Mughal eras. He paid tribute to Muhammad Ali Jauhar and Maulana Shaukat Ali for their pivotal role in supporting the Ottoman Caliphate and Turks, championing their cause, collecting aid, and voicing support through newspapers such as Comrade, Nakib-i Hemderd, and Hemderd. Türkiye commemorates ‘Democracy and National Unity Day'

KARACHI: The Consulate General of the Republic of Türkiye in Karachi on Tuesday held a solemn commemoration ceremony marking July 15 – Democracy and National Unity Day, remembering the victims and honouring the heroes who resisted the attempted coup in Türkiye in 2016. Delivering the keynote address, Dr Cemal Sangu, Consul General of Türkiye reflected on the events of July 15, 2016. He described it as 'a dark chapter in our nation's history,' when 'a faction within our military, led by the Fettulahist Terrorist Organisation —FETÖ — sought to overthrow our democratically elected government and undermine the very foundations of our republic.' The Consul General emphasised that the attempted coup was not just an attack on the government but on Türkiye's democracy, freedoms, and way of life. He said that 'FETÖ, led by Fethullah Gülen, infiltrated our institutions over decades, using deception and manipulation,' calling it 'not only a terrorist organisation, but also an espionage organisation with a 'cult' character.' 'No one should forget that the name of democracy is Türkiye,' he remarked. Recalling the dramatic scenes from that night, he said: 'Tanks rolled into our streets, jets flew low over our cities, and soldiers attempted to seize control of key installations.' But under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, innocent civilians, unarmed and defenseless, stood up against the coup plotters, showing immense bravery and resolve. 'Hundreds of our fellow citizens lost their lives, and thousands were injured in the struggle to protect our democracy. So, the name of heroism is Türkiye,' he added. Despite the darkness of the night, the Consul General highlighted the unity and strength that followed: 'The people of Türkiye, regardless of political affiliation, came together to defend our democratic institutions. Our unity and determination in the face of such adversity were nothing short of inspirational. Therefore, the name of courage and faith is Türkiye.' He informed the audience that the government of Türkiye took swift action after the coup: 'Thousands of arrests were made, and a thorough investigation was launched to bring those responsible to justice… because the name of independence is Türkiye.' He also warned of the lingering danger posed by the network: 'We must remain vigilant… These dark, self-interested and corrupt elements pose a danger to all societies abroad that have ties to Türkiye… since the name of freedom is Türkiye.' The Consul General called for lasting unity and solidarity, saying: 'The events of July 15th taught us that our greatest strength lies in our ability to come together in times of crisis… That's why the name of solidarity is Türkiye.' In conclusion, he declared: 'The July 15th coup attempt was a stark reminder of the fragility of democracy… But it also highlighted the resilience and courage of the Turkish people. The name of victory is Türkiye.' He also paid tribute to the martyrs of July 15 and the founder of the Republic of Türkiye, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

Preferential tariffs to help bolster Pak-Turkiye trade: CG

KARACHI: The preferential tariffs between Pakistan and Turkiye would help bolster trade in the leather sector between the two countries, said the Consul General of Turkiye, Cemal Sangu, during a meeting with a delegation of leather manufacturers and exporters. 'Preferential Trade Agreement is in its final stages between Pakistan and Turkiye,' Sangu said, advising the tanners' delegation to look into it thoroughly by contacting the Ministry of Commerce and seeking preferential tariffs in order to increase trade between the two countries in the near future. A delegation of Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) comprising its Central Chairman Hamid Arshad Zahur, Chairman (Southern Zone) Danish Aman, Vice Chairman Yousuf Shafiq, along with other prominent members, attended the meeting. Murat Ozmen, Commercial Attaché of Turkiye, was also present at the meeting. During the discussions, the PTA Chairman extended an invitation to Cemal Sangu and Murat Ozmen to attend the Pakistan Mega Leather Show (PMLS) scheduled for January 2026 in Lahore. The invitation encouraged Turkish participation in exploring Pakistan's approximately USD 1 billion leather market. Consul General said Pakistan and Turkiye are two countries but one nation, and during recent conflicts with India, we extended support to our brothers and sisters because Turkiye has never forgotten the help extended by the Pakistani people during the Khilafat Movement. Which is why, he said, this bond is highlighted in school celebrations. During the meeting, Danish Aman expressed deepest regards for all the support received from the people and the government of Turkiye during the recent standoff with India and the successful completion of Operation Bunyaan un Marsoos. Turkiye and Pakistan have a long history of trade relations, especially in the leather sector, with Turkish manufacturers of chemicals, tanning machinery, domestic raw materials, double-face and shearling leathers exporting their products to manufacturers in Pakistan. At the same time, finished and semi-finished leathers as well as value-added products like leather garments, leather gloves, and footwear are being exported to Turkiye as well. Both sides stressed the need to enhance mutual trade between the two countries by exploring each other's markets and establishing frequent contacts via visits of trade delegations. Such visits should open up the possibilities of joint ventures in the near future. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
