The Best Spicule Skin Care Products Are Like Microneedling in a Bottle

I'm one of those people who loves skin care but is afraid of in-0ffice treatments like Botox and microneedling. Lucky for me, the latest skin care trend gaining traction stateside involves little discomfort and only a spot on your vanity. Enter spicules, the latest K-beauty import taking over vanities everywhere Originating in Korea, 'topical spicule products contain microscopic needle-like structures that gently penetrate the upper layers of the skin to create a micro-stimulating effect,' explains dermatologist Marisa Garshick, MD, FAAD. Fellow dermatologist Nicole Salame, MD, FAAD notes that these needle-like structures can be derived from 'marine sponges, like Haliclona spp, which contain both calcium and silica' or synthesized from bioactive ingredients. When applied to the skin, they can encourage natural exfoliation, cell turnover, and better absorption of active ingredients, helping to do everything from smooth fine lines to decrease hyperpigmentation. Spicule-infused formulas are relatively painless to apply, Garshick mentions that you can expect 'a noticeable tingling or prickling sensation that can last several hours.' As such, it's best to apply them at night. She also suggests avoiding strong actives like AHAs, BHAs, vitamin C, or retinol immediately after, as these can cause irritation while the skin is more sensitive. Instead, she recommends following up with gentle moisturizers and hydrating serums that can support skin recovery, as well as sunscreen in the morning. 'As with any exfoliating or skin-renewing product, your skin will be more sensitive to UV exposure.' Ahead, I tapped both experts and pored over customer reviews to find the best spicules skin care products currently on the market. Scroll down to shop them, plus uncover more expert-backed tips on how to incorporate spicules into your routine. VT Cosmetics is arguably responsible for putting spicules skin care on the map. Its popular Reedle Shot Essence 1000 is the most potent strength offered, though if you wish to ease your way into the trend, the formula comes in a few lower dosages. Also within the serum is Centella Asiatica, an Eastern herb traditionally used for healing wounds, eczema, and psoriasis. Per reviewers, the creamy formula is lightweight and quickly absorbs into the skin. An Amazon reviewer says: 'This is very active but really helped my redness.' If you can handle more potent treatments and/or are already comfortable with microneedling, this high-intensity spicule serum is the way to go. It contains a whopping 30,000 spicules that work to smooth out rough textures and minimize the appearance of pores. Additionally, it contains niacinamide and collagen to help plump and add a glow. According to reviewers, it quickly dissolves into the skin and dries down slightly tacky—though it'll make your complexion feel facial-soft if you follow it up with an enriching moisturizer. An Amazon reviewer says: 'I used this product and within seconds I could see my face tighten before my eyes! It was incredible, within three days I looked back to my teenage self! I love the little tingle it gives you—it's almost addictive.' This Dr. Garshick-approved sheet mask uses spicules to enhance the results of its other powerhouse ingredients, including French collagen, elastin, nourishing hyaluronic acid, and four types of complex peptides. 'It delivers visible plumping and firming after just one use,' she says. What's more, it promises to lift and tone for a more contoured look. To offset the slightly tingling sensation, it also creates an instant cooling effect on the skin. This option from Aprilskin was specifically formulated for sensitive skin types, featuring a blend of tranexamic acid and niacinamide to reduce redness and flare-ups. Due to its non-irritating formula, it's also suitable for daily use. An Amazon reviewer says: 'I believe I see my redness fading already. The tingle for me was so mild and only lasted about 30 seconds, and I have fairly sensitive skin.' For a deep clean, look no further than this spicule-infused mask from Pestlo. 'As a form of mechanical exfoliant, it can aid in smoothing texture and improving skin appearance,' says Dr. Salame. On top of working to clear out pores, it uses green tea extracts to reduce irritation, mugwort to promote skin healing, and pine bark extract to rebuild the skin barrier. An Amazon reviewer says: 'Very satisfying! My skin is glowing flawlessly, my pores are visibly smaller, and my skin is a lot smoother.' You may know PDRN by its street name: salmon sperm. Though it can sound off-putting, the salmon sperm-derived ingredient has been shown to noticeably boost hydration, collagen production, and reduce inflammation. This formula from viral brand Medicube combines salmon sperm with spicules to optimize these benefits. Backed by over 200 five-star reviews, it's praised by shoppers for helping to instantly brighten and smooth fine lines. If you've been eager to achieve glass skin, start with this. An Amazon reviewer says: 'My new favorite product. I could see the difference in my skin the next day. My complexion looked smoother, softer, and healthier. I see more results with this product at under $30 than I do with products that cost twice as much.' I know what you're thinking: If spicule skin care exists, do I still need to microneedle? While spicules offer a gentler approach that doesn't puncture the skin, Dr. Salame explains that the depth of penetration with spicules is roughly 0.2 to 0.5 mm, whereas microneedling ranges anywhere between 0.5 to 2.5 mm. If your skin can handle it and you want faster results, in-office microneedling may be your preferred option. 'Microneedling involves a controlled environment with professional tools and treatments,' says Dr. Garshick, adding that it's best to avoid at-home tools like dermarollers to avoid potentially damaging your skin. Every spicule product is different, so it's important to follow the instructions to a tee. As a general rule of thumb, Dr. Garshick advises applying on 'clean, dry skin, usually in the evening when your skin can rest and regenerate overnight.' She also recommends following up with soothing, hydrating formulas, due to the micro-channels spicules create on the skin. Most spicule products are meant to be used once or twice a week to allow your skin to fully recover between applications, says Dr. Garshick. You'll also want to avoid aggressively massaging spicules into your complexion, warns Dr. Salame, as this may lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and scarring. Dr. Garshick says spicule products can be beneficial for many skin types but may not be suitable for those with highly sensitive skin, as 'the stimulating sensation could trigger more irritation.' Dr. Salame adds that patients with acne or risk of hyperpigmentation should also proceed with caution. It is made with finely chopped Gotu Kola leaves mixed with ingredients such as onion, tomato, chilli, grated coconut, and lime juice. Sitting a little apart from the salad were two bowls of aloo gobhi and avocado. Winter skincare: 7 tips for soothing sensitive lips and skin

Is your lip balm making your lips worse? A dermatologist advises. Image: YouTube Sniffles, sneezes, and constant nose-wiping might feel like the norm during winter, but dry, sore lips and red, irritated skin around the nose don't have to be. According to Cape Town-based dermatologist Dr Lauren Knight, much of this discomfort can be prevented with the right skincare choices. 'The skin around the nose and mouth is thinner and more delicate, which makes it more prone to damage from repeated wiping,' she explains. 'Once the skin barrier is impaired, it can become dry, inflamed and more vulnerable to infection.' A few simple changes in your winter skincare routine can make a big difference. Here are seven common mistakes Dr Knight sees parents make—and how to avoid them: 1. Using rough or scented tissues Friction and fragrance are fast tracks to irritation. Choose ultra-soft, unscented tissues and gently dab rather than rub. Follow up with a protective balm containing lanolin and cocoa butter. 2. Applying adult balms to children's lips Many adult balms contain ingredients that worsen irritation in children. Not all lip balms are safe for little ones. Opt for fragrance-free, hypoallergenic formulas or those tested under paediatric control. 3. Relying on single-action moisturisers Moisturising alone isn't enough. Winter skin needs hydration and protection. Choose a dual-action balm that not only moisturises but also supports barrier repair and shields against further damage. 4. Not applying balm often enough Consistency is key. Reapply balm to the nose and lips several times a day, especially after eating, drinking, or wiping. Keep a tube handy in your bag or car for easy top-ups. 5. Overusing antiseptics or steroid creams Unless prescribed, avoid using antiseptic or cortisone creams, which may further irritate the skin. Instead, use gentle, repairing balms with ingredients like Centella Asiatica, vitamin E, and shea butter. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ 6. Barrier creams are not just for adults Children's skin is thinner and more reactive, so barrier support is even more essential. Opt for products specifically formulated for children. Dr Knight recommends specialised pediatric balms such as LETIbalm Paediatric Nose & Lip Repair for soothing and restoring delicate skin. 7. Ignoring allergis or infections Persistent redness and irritation may signal something more than just dryness. 'If your child has seasonal allergies, allergic rhinitis, or a secondary infection, a balm alone won't solve it,' says Dr Knight. In these cases, consult your GP or dermatologist for appropriate treatment. By choosing gentle, protective products and staying consistent with application, you can help keep your skin comfortable, healthy and resilient throughout the colder months. IOL Lifestyle

'I tried Erborian's new milky serum, it gave me plumper, glowier skin overnight'

Erborian's new milky serum promises glass-like skin overnight, and after just one use, I saw glow, hydration, and a noticeably plumper complexion Milky toners are a bit of a buzzword right now in the beauty world, but in my opinion, the ones I've tried actually live up to their hype. From BYOMA's Hydrating Milky Toner, £11.99, to Curel's Moisture Facial Milk and Beauty of Joseon's Glow Replenishing Rice Milk, I've trialled my fair share. And now K-Beauty brand Erborian has just launched its new Skin-Therapy Milky Serum. A biphase milky texture thats ideal for us who have normal to oily skin. I was intrigued by this as its a serum rather than a toner, and on the fact that it promises to target seven areas of the skin with just one tiny bottle. I'm not a massive fan of layering hundreds of different products on my face, so having a one-and-done product really appeals to me. Packed full with 17 powerhouse ingredients, including glow-giving Yuzu, soothing Centella Asiatica, and Ginseng, this milky serum is ideal for those with oiler skin or those who prefer a barely-there feel. Plus, it's got skin-plumping Hyaluronic Acid and 10% PHA to gently exfoliate, clear pores and smooth texture, along with Allantoin to calm any redness. Erborian Skin-Therapy Milky Serum review I'm already a huge fan of Erborian. The CC Red Correct with Centella Asiatica is my current go-to base product and one of my favourite ever skin tints. While the Super BB Concealer also has a spot in my everyday make-up bag. So I was very excited to test out this new launch. Firstly, I love the packaging, the glass bottle makes the serum feel really premium and the pipette makes the product so easy to use (makes sure to shake well before use as its a biphase texture). Secondly, I really enjoy the consistency, it feels oiler than serums I've tried in the past, but this makes the product glide so smoothly onto the skin and leaves the skin with that immediate radiance. The serum claims to have visible results after the first night, and I was pretty skeptical about this as I find a lot of brands claim that without actually having any instant results. But after using this serum for one night, I found that my skin felt hydrated, plumper and looked visibly glowy (in a trendy glass skin way, not a sweaty way). My sister even commented that my skin looked so bright and awake on our 7am morning walk. Because of the 10% PHA content, Erborian recommend using this as a night-time-only treatment, ideally on its own (though a moisturiser on top is fine). As I mentined above, that's ideal for me, I don't love layering lots of products, especially when I'm short on time before bed. I've struggled to find anything wrong with this product so far, I do have oilier skin so this product works perfectly for my skin your skin is on the drier side though, you might find it not quite hydrating enough. In that case, I'd suggest trying the Skin Therapy Oil Serum from the same range. It has a richer, oil-based texture that's better suited for dry or very dry skin. It is on the pricier side at £45, but considering how many areas it targets and the fact it eliminates using lots of other serums or toners, I think the price is justified.

This $9 overnight face mask made my skin noticeably brighter

New York Post may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and/or when you make a purchase. With so many face masks on the market, finding the right one for you can be difficult. Luckily, there's one that I've claimed as my new favorite — and it's only $9. Meet the Peace Out Skincare Overnight Bio-Collagen Recovery Mask. It offers a unique approach to nighttime skincare, combining the benefits of a sheet mask with advanced hydrating and anti-aging ingredients. Uniquely, it's designed to be worn overnight and it aims to rejuvenate the skin. Trust me, it'll leave your skin feeling refreshed and revitalized by morning. First and foremost, its formulation is worth raving about. It includes a blend of five peptides known as the Core Peptide Complex, which work together to boost moisture levels and promote firmer-looking skin. Additionally, the mask contains an 8-hyaluronic acid blend that delivers intense hydration, helping to strengthen the skin's natural moisture barrier and visibly plump the skin. Other key ingredients include niacinamide, which revitalizes skin from aging, sun and stress damage, and Centella Asiatica extract, known for its soothing properties. Peace Out Skincare Pros: Budget-friendly price point Contains hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and peptides to smooth, brighten and balance the skin Comfortable to wear, and ultimately effective as it's an overnight mask Cons: Leaves the skin a bit sticky, but that's only temporary; as soon as the mask is removed, the end result is still smooth skin The application process is straightforward. After completing your nighttime skincare routine, you apply the mask as the final step. The mask comes in a pouch with protective film over the pieces. Once removed, align the mask with your eyes and mouth, pressing gently to ensure it adheres to your skin. While the product description suggests leaving it on for a minimum of 3 to 4 hours, wearing it overnight is recommended for optimal results. In the morning, you peel off the mask and cleanse your face as usual. My review I was a bit skeptical about wearing an overnight mask. After all, I like my skin to breathe. However, the mask is comfortable to wear — even for me as a side sleeper — and I was impressed by the glowy, smooth results the next morning. Namely, I noticed a reduction in redness and irritation, thanks to the calming effects of Centella Asiatica. The combination of peptides and hyaluronic acid has been credited with improving skin hydration and elasticity, leading to a more youthful appearance. What's more, the mask's formulation helped to improve overall skin clarity, which is great for acne-prone skin, but rejuvenated my dry and sensitive skin as well. For my dry, hyaluronic acid is a blessing. It helps add moisture and suppleness to my skin, and this mask puts it in overdrive. Additionally, niacinamide works well on my sensitive skin as it helps rebalance the skin without causing redness or irritation. Before and after using the Peace Out Skincare mask. Glowy, smooth skin was the result. Victoria Giardina The glow wasn't just surface-level; it looked like my skin had actually woken up. I had been dealing with some dullness and uneven tone, and after just a couple of uses, the difference was noticeable. It felt like I'd hit the reset button on my complexion, and it gave me a little confidence boost, which is always a win. One of the biggest things I appreciated was how it refined my skin's texture. My skin felt smoother to the touch, and those tiny rough patches that often mess with how products apply were visibly reduced. It's like the mask gave my skin a soft-focus finish, kind of like a natural filter. I wasn't expecting that level of polish, especially from something I just left on for 15 minutes. It made my skincare routine feel more luxurious, almost spa-like, without leaving my bathroom. What sealed the deal for me was how well my makeup went on afterward. My foundation glided on effortlessly and looked more radiant and even. It didn't cling to dry spots or emphasize any redness (which, by the way, was significantly reduced thanks to the calming ingredients in the mask). It created such a flawless base that I found myself using less product overall. Honestly, this mask might be my new secret weapon when I want my skin to look its absolute best. The mask's design ensured it remained in place throughout the night. Its sheet format is convenient and mess-free, so it's a face mask I'd certainly use again. To top off its appeal, the face mask is cruelty-free, vegan, gluten-free, alcohol-free and free from parabens, phthalates, sulfates and artificial fragrances or dyes. Those who love clean beauty or are ultra-particular about what they put on their face will adore this mask. In terms of value, the Peace Out Overnight Bio-Collagen Recovery Mask is priced at $9 per mask. This is mind-boggling, as its efficacy is wonderful. Considering the quality of ingredients and the convenience of use, it's a worthwhile investment. The bottom line The Peace Out Skincare Overnight Bio-Collagen Recovery Mask stands out as a practical and effective solution for individuals seeking to enhance their nighttime skincare routine. Its formulation is *chef's kiss,* featuring thoughtfully curated ingredients that work synergistically to hydrate, soothe and rejuvenate the skin. As a result, there are noticeable improvements in skin texture and appearance. So, whether you're aiming to address specific skin concerns or simply looking to pamper yourself, this mask offers a convenient and beneficial addition to your skincare arsenal.
