KUCHING (May 24): In a landmark development announced at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) 2025 in Langkawi, Aviation Design Centre Sdn Bhd and the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (Centexs), had just entered into a strategic joint venture to establish Aerospace Academy Sarawak Sdn Bhd. This collaboration signified a significant milestone in advancing Sarawak's aerospace capabilities, aimed at nurturing local talent and strengthening Malaysia's position in the regional aerospace ecosystem. 'The new academy is envisioned to become a premier institution for aerospace manufacturing, as well as MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) training in East Malaysia and eventually, nationwide,' said both entities in a joint statement. The milestone was marked by an official handing-over of the 'certificate of incorporation', signifying the formal partnership invitation for the establishment of Aerospace Academy Sarawak. The certificate was presented by Aviation Design Centre to Centexs, symbolising the beginning of a strong partnership aimed at cultivating a skilled local workforce to serve the expanding aerospace sector. Presently, both partners have already been training some 100 youths since November last year, at the Lundu and Subang campuses. 'Aerospace Academy Sarawak will offer industry-aligned programmes tailored to global standards, empowering Sarawakian and Malaysian youths with cutting-edge technical capabilities in aerospace manufacturing and MRO. 'The collaboration merges Aviation Design Centre's robust industry expertise with Centexs' excellence in technology training, testbeds and commercialisation. 'This partnership will be a strategic milestone not just for our organisations, but for the entire State of Sarawak and Malaysia as well,' said Aviation Design Centre managing director Ezry Bakar Ahmad in the statement. 'Together, we aspire to establish Sarawak and Malaysia as a regional hub for aerospace talent and innovation.' Centexs chief executive officer Datuk Syed Mohd Hussein Wan Abdul Rahman remarked: 'Centexs is proud to be part of this forward-thinking initiative. 'The Aerospace Academy will open doors for our youths to enter high-value, high-tech industries, supporting Sarawak's and Malaysia's long-term vision for a diversified economy.' The formation of the academy supports Sarawak's broader industrial transformation agenda, and is expected to play a pivotal role in creating high-skilled job opportunities and advancing the local aerospace ecosystem. 'If this is successful, the business model could be established nationwide,' said the statement. Aviation Design Centre, an associate company of National Aerospace and Defence Industries (Nadi), is a progressive aerospace solutions provider, offering expertise in aircraft design, manufacturing support and training services for the aviation industry. Centexs, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Yayasan Sarawak, is a premier technology training institution dedicated to developing a highly-skilled workforce for key industries such as energy, digital, oil and gas, green energy, artificial intelligence (AI), and now, aerospace. The Minister for Utility and Telecommunications said this had already surpassed the 50 per cent target set under the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030. 'This marks a strong step forward in delivering seamless, efficient and accessible digital services to businesses and citizens, reflecting our commitment towards an inclusive, digital government,' he said in his keynote speech at the Sarawak Public Sector Innovation Forum held at a hotel here today. Julaihi said digital government initiatives aim to support Sarawak's development goals by delivering seamless, mobile and user-friendly public services. This, he added, emphasises rethinking service delivery through data, automation and emerging technologies – while also strengthening digital infrastructure, skills and talent, cybersecurity and cross-agency collaboration. 'The public sector needs to be 'digital by design' to fully adapt to and reap the benefits of the digital age. 'We need to embrace digital technology and data to transform the interaction with the users of public services, including policy design, delivery, monitoring and evaluation,' he added. Also present at the event were Centre for Technical Excellence Sarawak (Centexs) chief executive officer Dato Syeed Mohd Hussein Wan Abdul Rahman and Amazon Web Services (AWS) Asean regional managing director Eric Conrad. digitalisation government services julaihi narawi

In making the call, Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi said this would further expedite the state's digital transformation, in its effort to achieve a high-income status by 2030. 'AWS is investing US$6.2 billion (RM26.1 billion) in Malaysia, but if you look at the size of Sarawak, it is equally or almost the same size as Peninsular Malaysia. 'So please, with our digital transformation now underway in our effort to expedite our digital transformation, please do allocate some of your US$6.2 billion to Sarawak so that we would be able to achieve our target, especially in our effort to expedite digital transformation in the rural areas,' he said in his keynote address at the Sarawak Public Sector Innovation Forum here today. Earlier, AWS regional managing director for Asean region Eric Conrad had said AWS (Malaysia) Asia Pacific region, launched last August, represents an investment of US$6.2 billion in the country. He said AWS constantly works with its partners such as the Centre for Technical Excellence Sarawak (Centexs) to help realise Sarawak's digital economy aspirations. 'Together we can drive digitalisation and innovation in improving services, in creating an inclusive society, in building and developing economic growth, and enhancing quality of life,' said Conrad. Among those present was Centexs chief executive officer Datuk Syeed Mohd Hussein Wan Abdul Rahman.

He said effective enforcement was crucial in deterring future cyber threats, and there was a need for enforcement agencies to stay vigilant and adamant in curbing cyber crimes. 'We must be firm and ensure that any attempts to disrupt or threaten our technology usage are dealt with seriously. 'Our regulations are already in place. It is now a matter of enforcement and vigilance on the part of all parties, including individuals and the community, to remain cautious of cyber threats,' he told reporters when met after launching the 'MCMC-Microsoft AI Tech Skills for AI-enabled Economy' programme at the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (Centexs) here today. He added the state government would continue taking proactive steps in addressing the ever-evolving threat of cyber attacks. 'As technological developments are dynamic, we must keep pace with these changes. Related agencies must take appropriate measures to curb challenges that could disrupt the harmony of our digital environment,' he said. Meanwhile, Julaihi also encouraged the sharing of knowledge and expertise among stakeholders to strengthen defences against cyber threats. 'Knowledge is dynamic, and we should be open to sharing useful information and best technologies available to prevent cyber attacks. It is important that we continuously adapt to the latest developments.' Among those present were Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication deputy permanent secretary Syed Mohamad Fauzi Shahab, Centexs chief executive officer Dato Syeed Mohd Hussien Wan Abdul Rahman, Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation chief executive officer Dato Sudarnoto Osman and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Kuching Branch director Scott Kueh Sui Yek. Julaihi urges Sarawakians to embrace AI responsibly for sustainable future

Julaihi speaking during the event at Centexs today. KUCHING (April 27): Sarawakians must embrace artificial intelligence (AI) with responsibility and ethical awareness to ensure a sustainable and prosperous future, said Utility and Telecommunication Minister Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi. Julaihi stated that while AI offers vast potential to drive Sarawak's economic growth, there are also risks involved if the technology is not handled carefully. 'AI can easily be abused for malicious purposes, such as deepfakes or voice cloning to deceive or blackmail people,' he said at the launch of the MCMC-Microsoft AI Tech Skills for AI-enabled Economy programme at the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (Centexs) in Santubong here today. Given these concerns, Julaihi said the state government fully supports the country's recently launched Artificial Intelligence Governance and Ethics (AIGE) guidelines, describing them as a timely initiative to ensure AI is developed and used in a manner that respects human rights, protects privacy, and upholds public safety. He emphasised that responsible adoption of AI is crucial for Sarawak's vision under the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which aims to transform Sarawak into a high-income state by the end of this decade. 'Sarawak is on the right track. We have the leadership and the vision, but it is important that the benefits of progress are felt by all levels of society, including those in rural areas,' he said. Julaihi cited initiatives such as the Sarawak Rural Broadband Network (MySRBN) and the construction of 636 new telecommunication towers under the National Information Dissemination Centre (Nadi) project as key efforts in bridging the digital divide, providing better internet access to rural communities, and enabling them to participate in the digital economy. 'Our rural communities have the talent and the ambition. They just need the infrastructure to unlock their potential,' he said. He noted that Sarawak's strategic efforts to improve connectivity — such as the coastal highway network, new bridges, and improved utilities — are laying a strong foundation for a digitally connected future. On the other hand, the MCMC-Microsoft initiative, he added, will empower Sarawakians with knowledge of AI and its applications while promoting ethical and safe technology usage. To date, the programme has trained over 2,000 participants across the country, with AI governance and ethics as a key focus. 'Sarawak is ready for the future. Let us use AI responsibly, ensure inclusivity, and innovate for the benefit of all Sarawakians,' he said. Also present were Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication deputy permanent secretary Syed Mohamad Fauzi Shahab, Centexs chief executive officer Dato Syeed Mohd Hussien Wan Abdul Rahman, Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) chief executive officer Dato Sudarnoto Osman and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Kuching Branch director Scott Kueh Sui Yek. Others in attendance included Sarawak Artificial Intelligence Centre chief executive officer Prof Dr Patrick Then, Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) deputy general manager Dr Suhaila Jaffar, Social Security Organisation (Perkeso) Sarawak deputy director Farinah Japar and Biji-biji Initiative chief executive officer Rashvin Pal Singh.
