Pennsylvania man charged after dog left in hot truck dies
A man is facing charges after police said a dog left in a hot truck in a Pennsylvania parking lot died from heat stroke. Forty-three-year-old James William Smith of Tyrone was charged with a felony count of animal cruelty that resulted in death after his dog died on the way to the vet, CBS affiliate WTAJ reported. Allegheny Township police were wrapping up at the scene of a crash when bystanders told them that there was an English bulldog inside a truck in a parking lot off Plank Road, the TV station reported. Court documents obtained by WTAJ said that police found the dog lying on the seat, surrounded by feces, panting and unable to get up. Police got the dog out of the car and tried to render first aid while bystanders went into a nearby restaurant for ice, water and wet towels. Police said they identified Smith as the owner when he came out, WTAJ reported. Smith told police the dog was only in the truck for about 40 minutes. Officers put the dog in their cruiser and took it to the hospital. But when they got there, WTAJ reported that the staff told officers the dog had died from heat stroke. An officer from the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society arrived and told police that it was 81 degrees outside of the truck and 120 degrees inside, according to the TV station. Smith was arrested and taken to the Blair County Jail.

Person caught on camera tossing dog over fence at Pennsylvania shelter identified
A person caught on camera tossing a dog several feet over a fence at the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society has been identified. Logan Township police said 39-year-old Erin D. House of Williamsburg will be charged with animal cruelty and corruption of minors, CBS affiliate WTAJ reports. At the end of March, the no-kill shelter in Blair County shared a video on Facebook asking for help identifying the person caught on surveillance video tossing the dog over the fence and leaving. The video had over 700,000 views. The humane society wrote on Facebook that the suspect "TOSSED a senior Pitbull over our fence! Tossed her onto CONCRETE where she rolls down the sidewalk!!! It was probably a 5 feet drop, minimum! She spent the night outside ALONE! No food. No water. Nothing. What if she jumped the fence onto a 55mph road???" (Photo: Central Pennsylvania Humane Society/Facebook) Vet staff found the dog, later named Cherry, when they arrived eight hours later. The investigation revealed that Cherry recently had given birth to a puppy, which the humane society took into custody. The shelter also learned that Cherry, who must have experienced "a pretty significant landing" after she was thrown, dislocated her hip. The injury was "causing intense pain" and she had to have surgery. Cherry found a foster home where she could recover after her surgery, and after her foster mom fell "madly in love," she decided to adopt Cherry, the humane society said.

WATCH: Blair County animal shelter looking for person who abandoned dog
BLAIR COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — The Central Pennsylvania Humane Society (CPHS) wants to know who abandoned a dog at their shelter Thursday night. It was all caught on camera and the shelter shared the video on social media saying they were left feeling upset and mad. 'All of us here at CPHS are feeling all the emotions right now,' the post on the humane society's Facebook read. 'We desperately need help identifying this individual.' The disturbing video shows someone in a hoodie around 10:15 p.m. Thursday night getting out of a red vehicle with their dog on a leash. They proceed to walk around a bit before unhooking the dog and dropping it over the facility's fence. The CPHS said the dog was outside without any food or water until a vet found it Friday morning. 'It's awful convenient timing for a person who was very careful about what they did with keeping their headlights off when they pulled in and when they left so we could not find a license plate. Hood up so you can't see their face either. So, it's just been difficult to identify,' Shelter Manager Dylan Kotrick said. The humane society said the dog is doing okay and has been taking treats from the staff. They say if they can figure out who the person is they'll be pressing charges. As of 7 p.m. Friday, the CPHS said they had a lot of individuals come forward with a lot of information about the incident which was provided to the police. Anyone with information is asked to contact the shelter. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
