Govt elicits Ulema's support for Muharram harmony

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry on Thursday held an important meeting with leading religious scholars from across the country to discuss measures for maintaining peace, law and order, and interfaith harmony during Muharram, especially on Ashura. The meeting, chaired by Chairman of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad, brought together scholars from all schools of thought. Senior officials from the Ministry of Interior, FIA, Islamabad Police, and other law enforcement agencies were also present. During the meeting, Mohsin Naqvi praised the significant role that religious scholars play in preserving peace and stability during sensitive times. He said that their efforts are as crucial as those of the security forces and that scholars remain in constant contact with the administration, helping to resolve issues before they escalate. He added that he had personally witnessed many sensitive matters being resolved peacefully through the wisdom and efforts of religious scholars. The minister stressed the importance of mutual respect among different sects, stating, "We should neither abandon our own sect nor attack others." He called this a golden principle that should be spread throughout the country to promote unity. He also emphasized that Imam Hussain (A.S.) is a revered figure for all Muslims and that every believer shares an equal spiritual connection with him.

Pakistan to observe first of Muharram on Friday, Ashura on July 6

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's central moon sighting committee announced on Thursday it had sighted the crescent for the Islamic month of Muharram, which will be observed in the country from June 27. The sighting of the Muharram crescent marks the start of the new Islamic year 1447, a reference to the number of years passed since Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) migrated from Makkah to Madinah. Shia Muslims across Pakistan hold gatherings and organize processions during the month to pay homage to Imam Hussain, the prophet's grandson, who was martyred in the Battle of Karbala centuries ago on Muharram 10 or Day of Ashura. Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad, the chairman of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, told reporters in Quetta that the committee had received testimonies of the Muharram crescent's sighting from several parts of the country. 'Hence it has been decided with consensus that, god willing, the first of Muharram, 1447 Hijri, will fall on June 27, 2025, on the blessed day of Friday,' Azad said. 'And the day of Ashura, the 10th of Muharram, 1447 Hijri, will fall on July 6, 2025, on Sunday.' Militant groups have often targeted Muharram processions and imambargahs in Pakistan, killing hundreds of people in the past. The government takes stringent security measures during Muharram every year, especially on Ashura, to ensure protection for thousands of Shia pilgrims across the city. These measures include strict security checking, increased deployment of law enforcement personnel and suspension of cellular services. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has tasked the provincial government to crack down against elements spreading sectarian hatred on social media platforms.

'The moon of Muharram-ul-Haram has been sighted. Friday, June 27, will mark the first day of Muharram, while the 9th of Muharram will fall on Saturday, July 5, and Ashura — the 10th of Muharram — will be observed on Sunday, July 6,' he said. Earlier in the day, the Meteorological Department had noted that dusty conditions in Quetta could reduce the chances of moon visibility. It had projected that the moon would be visible between 8:10 PM and 9:00 PM, with an expected age of 28 hours and 38 minutes. Pakistan's national space agency, SUPARCO, had also released a forecast regarding the lunar month. It stated that the birth of the Muharram moon was expected on June 25 at 3:32 PM, and by sunset on June 26, the moon's age would be approximately 28 hours and 15 minutes. The agency noted that coastal areas of the country would have a 75-minute gap between sunset and moonset — conditions considered highly favourable for sighting the new crescent.
