New 3G pitch complete at Caerphilly sporting excellence hub
The previous surface at he Centre for Sporting Excellence in Ystrad Mynach had reached the end of its lifespan. The investment in the new facility is part of Caerphilly County Borough Council's Sport and Active Recreation Strategy. The renewed pitch enhances the overall quality of the site and strengthens its position as a Level 3 strategic facility for both club and community use. Chris Morgan, cabinet member for leisure, said: 'The improved pitch ensures we continue to provide the best possible environment for local clubs, schools and professional teams to thrive. "It shows how serious we are about delivering high quality, sustainable facilities across the county borough.' The centre is used by local sports clubs, school teams and college learners. Coleg y Cymoedd students regularly use it as part of their sporting and educational development, and Dragons RFC has renewed its long-term commitment to the site as its primary training base. Football festival brings together 120 young players
The final Girls' Primary Football Festival of the school year took place on June 20, at the Centre for Sporting Excellence in Caerphilly. It was held in honour of Wales Women's historic qualification for the UEFA Women's Euro competition and saw 120 girls from 12 primary schools across the borough take part. Councillor Chris Morgan, cabinet member for leisure, said: "This festival was a brilliant way to bring young people together to celebrate a huge milestone for women's football in Wales. "The enthusiasm and teamwork on show was fantastic, and events like this are a great example of how we can inspire the next generation to stay active and get involved in sport." Each school represented a different country, with pupils and staff dressing up in themed kits and waving flags. The day was supported by students from Coleg y Cymoedd who refereed and helped run the event. Trophies were awarded for Player of the Day, Save of the Day, and Goal of the Day, but every participant received a medal. The festival ended with a group photo and a cheer for Wales.

International rugby tournament to take place at Caerphilly venue

Caerphilly County Borough Council announced the venue for the prestigious international tournament, which will take place on July 5, 11, and 17. The Summer Series features mainly under-20 squads from all Six Nations unions: England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland, and Wales. Each team is allowed to include up to five under-23 players per matchday squad. The event provides a vital platform for the next generation of rugby stars to compete at an international level. Councillor Chris Morgan, cabinet member for leisure, said: "It's fantastic to see the Centre for Sporting Excellence hosting international fixtures of this scale. "Events like this put Caerphilly on the sporting map, showcasing our world-class facilities and commitment to both grassroots and elite sport. "We look forward to welcoming teams, supporters, and rugby fans to the borough this summer." The decision to bring the tournament to Ystrad Mynach reflects the centre's growing reputation as a hub for both community use and elite performance sport. All matches will be streamed live via the Six Nations U20 YouTube channel, with additional content shared across Six Nations Rugby social media channels.
