I sleep hot and on my side — the $1,000 Silk & Snow Hybrid mattress keeps me comfortable

When you think of the Great White North, mattresses probably don't come to mind. Since its launch in 2017, Silk & Snow has tried to change that with affordable beds fully made and manufactured in Canada. The company started with an all-foam mattress and has since expanded to offer more, including bed frames, organic mattresses, and even a couch. The Silk & Snow Hybrid is in the middle of the company's mattress offerings. It offers better support than the budget-friendly all-foam line and costs less than its organic beds. It's reasonably priced for a mattress with zoned pocket coils that supply targeted support where you need it most. The cooling cover fabric and gel-infused memory foam lend excellent temperature regulation to the Hybrid. It's offered in two firmness options: a medium-firm for back and stomach sleepers and the plush for side sleepers, which is the comfort level I tested. After sleeping on the Silk & Snow Hybrid for a month and putting it through several objective tests — comparing it to the 100+ models I've tried for our best mattress guide — the plush is a great competitively priced option for side sleepers seeking pressure relief without overheating. Back and stomach sleepers will want to consider the medium-firm version. Below, I'll cover what sets it apart, who should consider buying it, and what alternatives you might want instead. Construction The Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress combines CertiPUR-US-certified foams with zoned-support pocket coils to supply supportive pressure relief. All the materials are Canadian-sourced. The cover is made with an antimicrobial and proprietary cooling fabric to dissipate heat and wick away moisture. The top three foam layers consist of a plush 1-inch quilted memory foam layer, a 2-inch high-density cooling gel-infused memory foam for deep pressure point relief, and a 2-inch high-density transitional foam. Below the foam is the zoned-support pocket coil base with a firmer middle zone for proper spinal alignment. The coils are made of Canadian steel. An extra-firm foam perimeter surrounds the coils to prevent sagging. The Silk & Snow Hybrid is available in six standard sizes, ranging from twin to California King, and two firmnesses: Medium-Firm and Plush. I tested a queen with the Plush firmness, which costs $300 more than the Medium-Firm but also has two extra inches of plush foam for an overall thickness of 14 inches. Setup The Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress is delivered to your door in a mini fridge-sized box. At 110 pounds, it's hefty, so I suggest getting help removing the packaging and putting it on your bed frame. Notwithstanding the weight, the unboxing process is simple and quick. I just needed five minutes to remove the mattress from the box and the plastic it was vacuum-sealed in. Once free from the packaging, the Silk & Snow Hybrid quickly expanded to nearly full size. I noticed a mild odor initially, common with beds featuring foam, though the smell was gone a few hours later when I went to bed. Unfortunately, Silk & Snow doesn't offer in-home setup ("white-glove delivery"). The bed does have handles, which makes it easier to adjust once on the bed. Comfort Comfort preferences vary depending on your sleep position and body type. I'm a heavier fella with an athletic build, 6 feet and 225 pounds, if you simply must know. My favorite position is on my side, but I can sleep in any position. As with most side sleepers, I like my mattresses on the softer side, and the Silk & Snow Plush Hybrid delivered with a softer-than-average feel (4 out of 10). I tended to side sleep on the Silk & Snow and loved it. The zoned support helped keep my spine aligned while relieving pressure points. I didn't wake with noticeable soreness during the month I slept on the Plush Hybrid. However, my sleep quality scores didn't back up my comfort. As measured by my Garmin watch, I have an average sleep score of 60 out of 100. On the Silk & Snow, my average score was 59. I also noticed that I had trouble falling and staying asleep, possibly due to life circumstances. Back and stomach sleepers and heavier side sleepers might want to consider the Medium-Firm option, as I wasn't particularly comfortable when I tried to sleep on my stomach or back because I felt like I sank in too much, leaving my spine misaligned. The Plush is mainly a side-sleeper mattress. Heat dissipation The Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress did an outstanding job of staying cool. I used a laser thermometer to measure the surface temperature before lying down, right after getting up, and two minutes after. Of the mattresses I've tested, the average temperature when I get up is 89.5 degrees Fahrenheit. Yet, the Silk & Snow was much cooler at 87 degrees. However, it only dipped 10 degrees in the following two minutes, while most mattresses decrease by 12 degrees. While this is mildly concerning, it's arguably more important that a mattress remain cool while you're on it, and this is where the Plush Hybrid excels. Also, subjectively, I felt comfortable on it, even though I tend to overheat on most mattresses. It's a superb bed for hot sleepers. Edge support When lying or sitting on the side of a mattress, you want to feel comfortable. Good edge support helps with this and makes getting into and out of bed easier. The Silk & Snow Plush Hybrid's edge support is better than average, thanks to the firm border foam. To test edge support, I sit on the side of the bed and measure how much it sags. On average, mattresses compact 3 to 4 inches, and this bed was 3.5 inches. I also lie on the side and roll until I fall off. If my body gets beyond a 45-degree angle with the bed, then the mattress has good edge support. I could get well beyond that with the Plush Hybrid. Plus, I felt comfortable on the edge, not like I would fall off at all. Taking these test results together, the Silk & Snow Plush Hybrid is a good choice for those who value edge support. Motion isolation I put my phone's vibrometer app on one side of a mattress and drop a 15-pound bowling ball on the other side to measure motion isolation. This is designed to mimic the vibrations you might feel as your sleep partner flops around in the night. The Silk & Snow registered a 6.2 on the vibrometer, which is better than all but a handful of the mattresses I've tested. The pocket coils seem to be doing their job. When my cat jumped on the bed at night, I couldn't feel her until she put her nose on my nose. Unfortunately, no amount of motion isolation can help with that. The impressive motion isolation and the above-average edge support make the Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress an excellent choice for couples. Trial period and warranty Silk & Snow's 365-night sleep trial is among the longest I've seen. You're encouraged to sleep on the mattress for at least 30 nights. If you find it isn't right for you, you can return it for a full refund. Per the return policy, the bed must be in donatable condition, free of stains, tears, and other soiling/odors. This is because the company donates 95% of its returned mattresses to people in need. The other 5% are recycled. You can test the Silk & Snow beds in 18 showrooms if you live in or near Canada. Unfortunately, they aren't in showrooms outside Canada. Silk & Snow mattresses are backed by a 15-year warranty. This covers flaws in workmanship and permanent indentations over 2 inches deep. Repairs or replacements are free in the first 10 years of the warranty. Afterward, you're on the hook for 75% of the original purchase price. The warranty is void if you use an improper foundation, move the mattress from the country of purchase, or if the law tag is missing. For the full details, visit the Silk & Snow warranty page. Cons to consider As a side sleeper who enjoys soft beds, I don't like that the Plush Silk & Snow Hybrid costs $300 more than the Medium-Firm version. I don't think I should have to pay more to be comfortable. Back and stomach sleepers should probably stick with the Medium-Firm as the Plush was much too soft for those sleep positions. Silk & Snow doesn't offer in-home setup, which is unfortunate because the Plush Hybrid weighs 110 pounds for the queen. You may want to enlist the help of friends and family to unbox your new bed. What are your alternatives? I chose to test the Plush Hybrid because it's the most affordable Silk & Snow mattress for side sleepers. However, the company has an all-foam mattress for under $600 for a queen. While we haven't tested it yet, Silk & Snow offers the bed in Firm (geared toward back and stomach sleepers) and Medium-Firm (ideal for back and some side sleepers) for $75 more. Silk & Snow's priciest option is its Organic Mattress, which swaps memory foam for all-natural, GOLS-certified latex. The queen runs $850 for Firm, $1,050 for Medium-Firm, and $1,650 for Plush. The increased prices account for thicker slabs of latex. I haven't tested this bed yet, but I love latex because it's incredibly responsive, quickly adjusting to your body's contours. At a similar price point, I also recommend the DreamCloud Premier. It has a medium firmness that will accommodate most sleepers. It dissipates heat well and is a great option for couples. Plus, it's backed by a lifetime warranty, and in-home setup (aka, white-glove delivery) is available for $199. Yet, the Premier lacks Silk & Snow's zoned support. Still, I slept incredibly well on it. Read my full DreamCloud Premier Mattress review. best mattresses. The bottom line I recommend the Silk & Snow Hybrid Plush mattress to side sleepers who want pressure relief and good heat dissipation. Thanks to its superior edge support and motion isolation, it's also a terrific solution for couples. For its $1,000 price, you get a long trial period and warranty. The Plush version is best for side sleepers who prefer a softer feel, but the $850 Medium-Firm will better serve stomach and back sleepers.

After testing 100 mattresses, I was skeptical this sub-$300 Zinus hybrid could keep me cool. I was wrong.

If you've ever shopped for mattresses or bed frames on Amazon, you've likely seen the name Zinus. The brand is a reputable choice for consumers who want quality materials without breaking the bank. As a mattress expert, I recommend Zinus when friends and family ask for cheap guest room mattress recommendations. I'm always looking for the best mattresses. The Zinus Cooling Comfort Support Hybrid Mattress appeared on my radar when I wanted to test a good cooling mattress for under $500. After sleeping on it for a month, I can say it delivers for hot sleepers, though it does have some drawbacks. Below, I will cover my experiences with the Zinus Cooling Comfort bed, who should buy it, and what alternatives you may want to consider instead. Construction The Zinus Cooling Comfort Support Hybrid Mattress combines affordability with comfort and support, offering an impressive array of quality materials for its sub-$300 price. The top three layers are made of CertiPUR-US-certified foams, ensuring the bed meets rigorous durability, content, and emissions standards. The top foam layer provides plush comfort. Below that, gel-infused memory foam offers pressure relief and cooling. Then, transition foam contours to your body and supplies support. The base is made of individually wrapped coils, which lend the mattress support, spinal alignment, durability, and airflow. The soft, breathable knitted cover is made of OEKO-TEX-certified fabric. The Zinus Cooling Comfort comes in five sizes, ranging from twin to California king, and five thicknesses, from 6 to 14 inches. I tested the 12-inch queen. While you can save a few bucks with one of the thinner mattresses, I don't recommend it. In my experience, beds thinner than 10 inches rarely provide enough support. Setup The Zinus Cooling Comfort mattress arrives vacuum-sealed in a box the size of a mini fridge. At 73 pounds, it's heavy, so I recommend having a friend help you unbox it. The directions make the process simple. I only needed five minutes to take the bed out of the box, remove the layers of plastic, and place it on my bed frame. When it was free from the packaging, the Zinus immediately doubled in thickness, but it took about 24 hours to reach its full size. I had a mild initial "new bed smell," but that was gone by bedtime several hours later. Unfortunately, in-home setup, aka "white-glove delivery," isn't available for this Amazon-exclusive mattress. However, I've recently noticed the ability to add-on to your delivery the option for someone to haul away your existing mattress for $105. Comfort Different body types and sleep positions have different comfort preferences. For reference, I'm athletically built, a little heavier: 6-foot, 225 pounds. I can sleep in any position but prefer sleeping on my side. That said, the Zinus Cooling Comfort, advertised as "medium-plush," should have been perfect for me. Yet, I found it was firmer than average (6 out of 10), and better suited for back and stomach sleepers. I generally slept on my side on the Zinus and felt comfortable enough, but the bed lacked the dynamic pressure relief that my body craves. I occasionally awoke with shoulder or neck soreness due to poor spinal alignment. I also had trouble falling back asleep after waking. Overall, my sleep on the Zinus was good but not great. During the month I tested it, my sleep quality score average, as measured by my Garmin watch, was 62 out of 100, just off my normal 63. While this description may sound negative, the comfort was impressive considering the Zinus's price. You aren't going to get a luxury experience for under $300. Heat dissipation The Zinus Cooling Comfort Support Hybrid Mattress showed outstanding heat dissipation when I used a laser thermometer to take three measurements: the surface temperature before lying down, right after getting up, and two minutes after. The surface temperature was 89 degrees Fahrenheit right after getting up, much lower than the other affordable mattresses I've tested. The heat dissipated quickly, dropping 13 degrees in two minutes, better than the 12-degree average. I overheat on most mattresses, but had no sweaty nights on the Zinus Cooling Comfort. These results suggest that it's the smart choice for hot sleepers on a budget, earning it a spot in our guide to the best cooling mattresses. Edge support Edge support helps you get into and out of bed and feel supported when sitting or lying on the side of the bed. The Zinus Cooling Comfort mattress's edge support is just average. I evaluated the edge support by measuring how far I could roll on the side of the mattress before falling and how much the edge sank when I sat on it. When I sat, the edge compressed about 4 inches, slightly more than average. When rolling off, I've found the beds with the best edge support allow me to get past a 45-degree angle before I fall. With the Zinus, I was right at 45 degrees. While it wasn't awful, you may want to look elsewhere if you need a bed with excellent edge support. Motion isolation To measure motion isolation, I placed my phone with a vibrometer app pulled up on one side of the bed and dropped a 15-pound bowling ball on the other. This mimics the vibrations caused by your sleeping partner moving in the night. The Zinus registered 7.5 on the vibrometer, worse than most mattresses across my testing. The individually wrapped pocket coils are supposed to help with motion isolation, but that wasn't the case here. I could also feel my wife distinctly when she joined me on the bed. As with most mattresses with poor motion isolation, the Zinus had pretty good bounce, which sexually active couples might appreciate. Overall, though, with the average edge support and subpar motion isolation, I wouldn't recommend the Zinus Cooling Comfort hybrid to couples. Trial period and warranty Amazon offers a 100-night trial period for the Zinus Cooling Comfort Support Hybrid Mattress. If you don't like the Zinus, you can return it within that window for a full refund, though the process isn't completely clear. Amazon states the item must be returned in "its original condition." It's unclear if this means unused. They also don't state if you're responsible for schlepping the mattress to an Amazon return location. At the time of publishing, Amazon and Zinus hadn't returned our inquiries. The mattress is covered by a 10-year warranty, but several catches exist. First, you must use a supportive foundation, though the warranty doesn't specify what that means. Also, the warranty is voided if you use an electric blanket or heating pad with the mattress or if you remove the Law Tag. If you avoid these loopholes and experience an indentation of over 1.5 inches or other defects of workmanship or materials, Zinus will replace your mattress or provide you with a pro-rated refund. Cons to consider The Zinus Cooling Comfort's biggest negative was its poor motion isolation. You don't want to feel your partner or pets moving in the night, as this can hurt your sleep quality. If you plan on sharing the bed with someone else, I'd consider upgrading to a larger size, especially considering the average edge support. This will give you a more usable sleep area and provide more distance from your partner to dampen motion. I was bummed that the mattress was firmer than advertised. I looked forward to a nice medium-plush feel to support my side sleeping, but it was much firmer and better suited for back and stomach sleepers. It's misleading in that people seeking a plush solution may be dissatisfied, and those after a firmer bed may dismiss this viable option from their search. Heavier individuals who sleep on their side may also like the Zinus Cooling Comfort Support Hybrid. However, if you're looking for a softer bed, consider one of the alternatives below. What are your alternatives? Zinus is one of the most popular mattress brands on Amazon, with countless affordable options. The Zinus 12-Inch Green Tea Cooling Gel Memory Foam Mattress is the top foam pick in our guide to the best cheap mattresses. It costs slightly more than the Cooling Comfort, but it's a better option for side sleepers and couples, thanks to its excellent motion isolation and edge support. Still, the Zinus Green Tea is a smidge firmer than average. If you like your mattress soft, consider the Siena Memory Foam Mattress. It's under $300 and has an average firmness, which felt great sleeping on my side. Plus, it's great for hot sleepers and couples and comes with a 180-night sleep trial. Another great budget option is the Allswell Mattress, the best cheap hybrid I've tested. At roughly the same price, the Allswell is firmer than the Zinus Cooling Comfort and sleeps warmer. Yet, it's a better option for couples, thanks to its terrific motion isolation and edge support. Best of all, I slept great on it. Read our full Allswell Mattress review. best cheap mattresses. The bottom line The Zinus Cooling Comfort Support Hybrid is the best option for hot sleepers on a budget, thanks to its impressive heat dissipation. You'll be hard-pressed to find a higher-quality hybrid mattress under $300 featuring CertiPUR-US and OEKO TEX-certified materials. It's not without its drawbacks, however. Due to its poor motion isolation, below-average edge support, and firmer than advertised feel, I recommend it for budget-conscious stomach and back sleepers who sleep alone.

The numerical display is legible up close, but it's slightly dimmer when viewed off-center. Not the brightest, and there's no option to increase the display size for nearsighted sleepers. Use code WCLOFTIECLOCK to get the deal price for all colors except red. Read more: The Best Alarm Clocks Loftie Lamp Offering a modern twist on a classic silhouette, this chic bedside lamp boasts seemingly endless single and gradient color combinations. It can also double as a sunrise alarm clock and schedule bedtime reminders. Other things to know: App can be a little clunky. You can get similar features for cheaper using a smart bulb with most lamps. 60-day return policy, but there's an $8 shipping and 10% restocking fee on returns. One-year warranty. Use code WCLOFTIELAMP to get the deal price for the white color. Read more: Our Favorite Bedside Lamps Baloo Weighted Blanket (queen, 15 pounds) Other things to know: The cotton batting prevents the weight from enveloping you as closely as blankets without such filler. Compared with knit-style options, it can feel less breathable and even hot. Lifetime guarantee on materials and workmanship. Deal price is for the full/queen size. Read more: The Best Weighted Blankets Riley Four Layer Throw When it's too sweltering to sleep under a thicker throw, this breezy cotton blanket just might do the trick. It's one of the lightest throws we recommend, with a pleasant crinkly texture that feels cool on the skin. $110 $76 from Riley Home Other things to know: Listed size is 70 by 50 inches, but our test sample measured 78 by 58 inches out of the package. Use code WCSLEEP30 to get the deal price with free shipping. Read more: The Best Throw Blankets Chasing Paper Wallpaper With the most textile-like feel of the removable wallpapers we tested, this lightweight, fabric-based option is easy to install and restick. There are a decent range of styles and color palettes to choose from, and all come in the same crisp print quality with a tactile, woven finish. Other things to know: Adhesive is quite sticky and material is quite thin, so it can get floppy and increase the risk of the panel sticking to itself. Lighter-colored wallpapers may appear more muted when installed on dark-colored walls. More limited selection. No returns; exchanges 'for any items that are not completely satisfactory' within 14 days. Use codes WIRECUTTER20 and FREESHIP to get 20% off your purchase, plus free shipping. Example deal pricing is for the Cleo Stripe Vertical wallpaper (2 x 12 feet, peel and stick). Pro tip: We recommend opting for the premium rug pad with your purchase to make it softer underfoot and keep it in place. $189 $142 from Revival Use promo code WCTIDY25 for 25% off Other things to know: Best for dining rooms, living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, and kids' rooms. We originally stopped recommending this rug as a pick due to availability issues, but some stock is still available. Much like real fiddle leaves, the tops have a shiny finish that makes them look realistic from as little as a foot away—especially with light streaming through them. $50 $36 from Home Depot Other things to know: The underside of the leaves look completely flat and artificial. 'Real touch' claim seems to refer to the 'real' feel of a child's inflatable raft, rather than that of a tropical leaf. Likely made of plastic and polyester, not silk. Free shipping. Read more: Fake Plastic Trees and Artificial Plants We Don't Hate Roborock Q5 Max+ Robot Vacuum This quiet, speedy robovac is equipped with lidar and sensors to avoid hurdles, allowing it to course-correct faster and more accurately than others. As a result, it cleans better than any others we tested at its price, with a self-emptying bin that actually works. Other things to know: User-friendly app stores up to four maps and allows for spot-cleaning. The charging station empties debris into a disposable bag. Like almost all bots we tested, it struggles with debris near thresholds and baseboards. Standard one-year warranty, but few replacement parts. Use code RRSAP20241122045238IGQUD. It's even more powerful than our top pick, with an oscillating base to help spread the breeze around. No squeaky fan noise, brooding detective, or fedora included—sorry! $150 $118 from Lumens Other things to know: Sure, this may not be in-season, but this excellent fan doesn't drop this low very often, making it a great opportunity to save ahead of warm weather. More energy-intensive on its highest setting than our top pick, but ultimately won't add that much to your electric bill. Emits a sort of propeller-like whine on its highest setting. Michael Murtaugh/NYT Wirecutter For an effortlessly chic look, this slinky robe features a generous and flattering fit with in-seam pockets and three-quarter-length sleeves. The buttery-soft fabric feels cool on the skin, like a luxe T-shirt, and clings to curves more than more-structured robes. $75 $58 from Natori Use promo code WIRECUTTER Other things to know: May be too formfitting for some. We found slight shrinkage after washing (3.85%), but that didn't affect the coverage or the generous fit. Comes in sizes XS to 3X. Use code WIRECUTTER to get the deal price in dark gray or red. Extra-long sleeves can be rolled up or hemmed. Brooklinen phased out the previous version of this robe in late 2023; this pricier, updated design has a flat, kimono-style collar instead of a shawl collar. Use code WC27. Not only is it stylish and secure enough to wear around town or on outdoor adventures, but it's also one of the most durable and warm vests we tested. The recycled-polyester shell holds up well against wind and water, and the 800-fill-power down and multitude of baffles provide ample insulation. Like the women's style, this warm vest features 800-fill-power down and a tough, recycled ripstop nylon shell. It also has a drawcord hem at the hips to create a secure fit, which makes it great for layering over or under fleeces and jackets. Other things to know: Doesn't fit in its own pocket like some of the other vests we tested, but packs down small enough. Comes in women's sizes XXS-XXL and select men's sizes XS-XXL, which isn't as expansive a size range as we'd like. The women's style is on sale in green and mauve, and the men's style is on sale in green or yellow. Read more: The Best Insulated Vest Arc'teryx Thorium Hoody This durable coat is filled with 750-fill-power goose down, as well as synthetic insulation in areas that tend to see the most rain in a downpour (namely the cuffs, shoulders, and hood). This makes it warm enough that you won't need extra layers, and it's not too puffy, with a slightly fitted waist, gently curved hem, and silhouette that falls right at the hip. $500 $401 from REI Like the women's style, this jacket is warm and durable enough to last for years. It's filled with 750-fill-power goose down and has synthetic insulation in the cuffs, shoulders, and hood, offering the best of both worlds. $500 $401 from REI Other things to know: Can look droopy if you stuff the pockets. The shell material can get crinkly over the course of a season and the hood looks a little goofy, but these are minor complaints. Stuff sack compresses it down to roughly the size of a Chipotle burrito. Comes in women's sizes XXS-XXL and men's sizes XS-XXL. The women's style is on sale in tan and black, with more size availability in tan. The men's style is on sale in blue and black, with more size availability in blue.
