Unchecked vehicle issues linked to rise in road accidents, say experts
ROAD traffic accidents remain one of the top five causes of death in Malaysia, with recent figures highlighting the urgency for improved road safety measures.
While human behaviour, road design and infrastructure play significant roles, one factor squarely within the control of motorists is the condition of their vehicles.
In a statement, Sirim Qas said timely maintenance is crucial, especially essential tasks like changing engine oil, can make a significant difference in ensuring vehicle safety and performance.
"Engine oil plays a vital role in lubricating internal engine components, reducing friction, and helping prevent overheating. Additionally, clean engine oil aids in preventing rust, lowering emissions, improving fuel efficiency, and protecting against early engine failure.
"When engine oil is not changed on time, its effectiveness diminishes, leading to increased wear and tear on your engine, which, over time, can compromise the car's overall performance and even contribute to accidents," the company said.
When your car speaks, listen closely
Sirim further urged motorists to pay attention to the signals their vehicles provide. Loud engine noises, reduced fuel efficiency and dashboard oil service notices are common indicators that it's time for an oil change.
"When your car sounds louder or guzzles more fuel, it's telling you something. Ignoring these signs can lead to costly repairs or worse, put you at risk while driving," Sirim said.
According to Sirim, neglecting oil maintenance can cause sludge buildup, corrosion and overheating, ultimately resulting in engine failure.
"If you find yourself visiting the petrol station more often than usual, it could be a sign that the consistency of your engine oil has degraded, forcing the engine to work harder and burn more fuel.
"In addition, the appearance of an oil service notice on your dashboard is a direct message from your vehicle that it is time for maintenance," the company added.
Rising awareness and proactive measures
Sirim further said vehicle maintenance in Malaysia has seen a positive shift, with the maintenance and repair sector generating RM31.8 billion in 2024, accounting for 10.6 per cent of the motor vehicle sub-sector's performance. However, experts caution that negligence still contributes to preventable accidents.
"It is safe to say Malaysians have been taking precautions, as vehicle negligence due to poor maintenance practices only adds to the risk. It is far more cost-effective and safer to address minor issues early than to deal with major repairs or, worse, a preventable accident," the company said.
Another growing concern is the rise of counterfeit engine oils, which can lead to poor lubrication, higher emissions, and faster engine wear.
To address this, Sirim Qas International has introduced its Certification Scheme for Genuine Product (Engine Oil for Motor Vehicles).
The scheme ensures that certified engine oils meet stringent international standards and are verified for authenticity.
Consumers can check products through the Sirim Qas Mobile App by scanning QR codes or looking for certified tamper-evident labels.
"Being a smart consumer means taking simple but crucial steps such as verifying product certification before an oil change or asking your workshop for proof of authenticity. These proactive measures not only protect your vehicle's engine performance but also ensure safety on the road.
'With counterfeit products in the market, verification is crucial. Our certification and mobile app empower drivers to make informed decisions and ensure the oil they use is safe and reliable.
"This certification ensures that engine oils meet stringent international standards for performance and authenticity, giving consumers confidence in the products they purchase," the company said.
