Alexander Bublik clinched his maiden Tour-level title on clay as he took down Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the Swiss Open final in Gstaad on Sunday. World No. 34 Bublik, the second-seeded Kazakh, defeated Argentine World No. 109 Cerundolo 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in two hours and eight minutes to bag his sixth ATP Tour singles title and second of the season. The 28-year-old Bublik bounced back from a first-round exit at Wimbledon as he beat Alexander Shevchenko, Francisco Comesana, Arthur Cazaux and Cerundolo to become the champion in the Swiss Alps. World No. 33 Shapovalov, seeded third, took down Govind Nanda, Tristan Schoolkate and Adam Walton on his way to the final. "This is my sixth title and I have played the greats of the game, but this final I will remember as one of the toughest I ever played," said Bublik. "It was complete torture." Cerundolo was playing in his first tour-level final since 2021 having dumped out top seed Casper Ruud in the last eight on Friday. Bublik will climb back into the top 30 on Monday after a resurgence which has seen him win 17 of 22 matches since the start of the Madrid Open in mid-April. GSTAAD: No. 2 seed Alexander Bublik and unseeded Juan Manuel Cerundolo advanced to the EFG Swiss Open Gstaad final with straight-sets victories on Saturday in Switzerland. SWISS OPEN Kazakhstan's Bublik defeated Frenchman Arthur Cazaux 6-1, 7-5 in 73 minutes. He hammered 12 aces, posted a 35-11 edge in winners and never faced a break point. Argentina's Cerundolo will play for his second ATP Tour title – and first since 2021 – after a 6-3, 6-3 semi-final win against Peru's Ignacio Buse. Cerundolo saved the only break point he faced in the 82-minute victory. -------------------------------------------- Unseeded Dutchman Jesper De Jong and No. 6 seed Luciano Darderi of Italy will play for the championship today in Bastad, Sweden. De Jong is chasing his first ATP Tour title after a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) win over No. 5 seed Camilo Ugo Carabelli of Argentina. He overcame a 5-4 deficit in the second set and won 83 percent of the points (34 of 41) behind his first save, including eight aces. Darderi outlasted No. 1 seed Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3) in two hours, 34 minutes. Darderi overcame a 4-2 deficit in the deciding set and spoiled a big weekend for the Cerundolo family, as brother Juan Manuel Cerundolo is in today's final in Gstaad, Switzerland. -------------------------------------------- MIFEL TENNIS OPEN Third-seeded Denis Shapovalov won his second title this season with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over seventh-seeded Aleksandar Kovacevic in Los Cabos, Mexico. The Canadian, ranked No. 33 in the world, added to his victory in Dallas in February with his fourth career title. No. 76 Kovacevic, an American who had ousted top-seeded Andrey Rublev of Russia in the semi-finals, is still looking for his first championship. Shapovalov had more aces (6-2) and winners (15-7), while Kovacevic had only one more unforced error (23-22). Shapovalov won 81 per cent of his first serve points (26 of 32) to 67 per cent for his opponent (22 of 33). Kovacevic had to work to save five of eight break point opportunities, while Shapovalov was 1-for-1 in saving break points. - REUTERS
