Cork council gives go-ahead for 90 social housing units set to sell at 20% below market value

Plans for almost 90 new social housing units in Cork City have been approved, where homes will be on sale at 20% below open market value. City councillors approved two separate social housing schemes at their July meeting — one which will deliver 80 new social homes at Glyntown, Glanmire, and the other which will deliver eight new units near Ballincollig town centre. The Glyntown scheme, accessed via East Cliff Road, will include four three-storey buildings to provide a mix of 30 three-, two- and one-bedroom apartments, as well as two four-storey apartment blocks, to provide a mix of 48 three, two and one-bedroom apartments. The subdivision of the former Coach House on the site will provide two three-bedroom units over two floors, and the scheme also includes the provision of 101 parking spaces and 204 bike parking spaces. More than 600 residents signed one of the nine submissions made on the scheme, many raising concerns about the scale and density of the project. Councillors also approved plans for the construction of eight new social homes on the site of a vacant house in Ballincollig, at the junction of Inniscarra View and the main street, near the Poulavone roundabout. The existing house and shed on the corner site will be demolished to allow for the construction of one four-bed house, four two-bed townhouses, and three two-bed apartments, ranging in height from two to two-and-a-half storeys. Both schemes will be delivered by way of a project agreement with Cetti Limited. It comes as Cork City Council, in partnership with Galtymore Homes, announced details of the Carraig Dún affordable housing scheme in Killeens, near Blarney. The nine three-bedroom semi-detached homes will be available from €320,000, with its online applications portal due to open for eligible applicants early next month. Homes in such schemes are generally available for first-time buyers who do not have an interest in any other property, although exceptions may apply for 'Fresh Start' applicants. Income limits apply and potential applicants can get details of the qualifying criteria at The online application portal will open at 12 noon on August 6, and will close at midnight on August 27.
