CBI veteran investigator honoured with President's Medal

Hyderabad: When Ch Venkata Narendra Deve joined the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Feb 9, 1989, he completed his training at the CBI Academy by taking home the All-Round Best Award.
Now, 36 years later, the additional superintendent of police in the CBI's anti-corruption branch, Hyderabad, has been honoured with the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service. Deve, who hails from Visakhapatnam, was earlier awarded the Indian Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2018.
Throughout his career, Deve has been part of teams that handle some of the most high-profile investigations in the country.

He was part of the team, which probed the helicopter crash that claimed the lives of Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy — who was then the chief minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh — and four others in September 2009.
He also played a key role in the AP high court-monitored Emaar Properties case from 2011, involving senior IAS officers and alleged losses to the state exchequer in a luxury villa and golf course project. In the Obulapuram mining case, he contributed significantly to the trial of mining baron Gali Janardhan Reddy.

Specialising in anti-corruption work, Deve has laid traps and investigated cases that exposed senior govt and public sector unit officials. His work record includes booking a commissioner of income tax in Mumbai for allegedly taking 1.7 crore, an income tax officer for accepting a 65 lakh bribe, and a chief engineer of South Central Railway for a 5 lakh payoff. He also investigated cases involving the regional chief of Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO) and the chairman and managing director of Dredging Corporation of India.
