Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin Officially Call It Quits After 8 Years Together

Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin have officially broken up, according to new report from People. The ex-couple were engaged to be married and had been an item since 2017. Breakup rumors also surfaced last summer, but a rep for Johnson said they were "happily together" at the off-again couple Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin are officially off for good, according to a new report from People. The duo were previously engaged and first started dating eight years ago, in 2017. Of the split, one source said simply, "It feels final this time." The ex-couple were last seen together just two weeks ago in Malibu, California. Before that, they were photographed together in India (Martin's band Coldplay is currently on tour). Rumors of a split initially surfaced last August, but at the time, a rep for the Materialists actress insisted the couple was "happily together." "Sure, they've had issues and taken breaks in the past, but things are great now," a source later told People. "They both love their careers. They are balancing things the best they can." Johnson and Martin had been engaged for "years" when news of their pending nuptials broke last year, however they never actually tied the knot. The duo were in "no rush to get married," according to a source who spoke to People said at the time. Of course, any plans of a wedding have now been permanently postponed. Aside from her relationship with Martin, Johnson made headlines most recently for her appearance at Cannes Film Festival, during which she low-key announced her feature film directorial debut. "The girl that plays my daughter [in Cha Cha Real Smooth], Vanessa Burkhart, she is an autistic actress and musician and brilliant person, and we have been working with her on developing a script," Johnson told reporters, per Deadline. "She's written a script, and it's really special, and it's about a young woman with autism. I feel very protective of her and her story in her mind, she's just an unbelievable woman. I just don't think I could allow anyone else to direct it. So we'll see.' Read the original article on InStyle

‘Splitsville' Review: The ‘Climb' Sensations Covino & Marvin Are Back In Riotous Comedy Of Marital Woes With Dakota Johnson And Adria Arjona

In 2019 The Climb made a splash in Cannes like few independently made comedies ever could do as it won a prize in the Un Certain Regard section, drew major critical praise, got instant distribution from Sony Classics and put its creators and stars Michael Angelo Covino and Kyle Marvin on the map as filmmakers to watch. Six years later, they finally are back on the Croisette for tonight's Out of Competition premiere of a new comedy all about marriage in crisis, Splitsville, and I am happy to report they are firing on all cylinders with this truly hilarious look at two couples who are best friends but find their marriages suddenly are blowing up. In fact, I would say it is this film that will firmly establish them as true comedy heavyweights, whereas The Climb had several LOL moments but ran out of steam toward the end. Splitsville stays on course for all 100 minutes, and it has some pretty outrageous stuff along the way. More from Deadline 'Splitsville' Director Tears Up As Dakota Johnson Pic Gets Eight-Minute Ovation At Cannes Premiere Dakota Johnson Plans To Direct First Feature From Script By 'Cha Cha Real Smooth' Actress Vanessa Burghardt – Cannes 'Highest 2 Lowest' Review: Denzel Washington Finds A Great Role And A$AP Rocky Finds A New Career In Spike Lee's Entertaining Kidnap Drama - Cannes Film Festival RELATED: As it starts we meet Carey (Marvin) and his bride of 15 months, Ashley (Adria Arjona), happily singing off-key as they drive along a country road on their way to see best friends Paul (Covino) and his wife Julie (Dakota Johnson). Then Ashley offers a, uh, sexual favor to Paul right there in the driver's seat. Unfortunately tragedy occurs when their antics cause another weaving car to roll off the road, with the driver's wife thrown from the passenger seat. Horrified they jump out of their car, pull the dazed man out and try to revive the woman to no avail. Not exactly a setup for laughs, but to show where this movie might be going, a female cop turns up and asks Carey why his penis is out of his pants flopping in the wind. Whoops. This is just the beginning, and for a shell-shocked Ashley also the end as she chooses this moment to tell Carey she wants out of their short-lived marriage, and she's serious. He freaks out and, close to Paul and Julie's house, runs away through the field, eventually showing up in their backyard and explaining to his friends about the sudden breakup. RELATED: In pure Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice fashion, it isn't long before they are consoling him by saying the secret to their union is to have an 'open' marriage, advice these two free spirits offer freely, even climbing in the shower — fully clothed — while Carey washes up. Soon their marriage is on the rocks when, in an alone moment, Carey and Julie hook up. The trouble really starts when Carey, actually believing Paul might be fine with it, admits he had sex with his wife. Paul is not fine with it, and a brawl you have to see to believe commences between the two bros. This fight is one for the ages, beautifully choreographed and an instant classic. Covino, as he did on The Climb, again takes the director's chair for the script he co-wrote with Marvin, and he isn't afraid to also throw everything at the wall, again. This time, most of it sticks, with both couples trying out various partners to diminishing results. I had concerns this would all careen out of control and go way too far over the top, but they are able to keep it grounded due to a very smart and witty screenplay that also finds time to offer real truths about what makes a marriage work. Covino and Marvin are superb comic actors, not afraid to go for it when they want to but also keeping it real and relatable. They are aided greatly by Johnson and Arjona, who make you believe that deep down they are in love with these guys, but not ready to put up with craziness for the rest of their lives. In Johnson's case, she is a mother to son Russ (Simon Webster, a terrific kid actor), who she and her husband need to put first amidst all this madness. You could compare this style of adult film comedy favorably to likes of movies like the aforementioned Paul Mazursky classic, Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice and other gems of the grown-up '70s era of Hollywood studio comedies. Covino, though, points out his inspirations are more toward Charlie Chaplin and his idol, Jim Carrey. I don't think he and Marvin should underestimate the sophistication of what they have pulled off with Splitsville. In a business that downplays comedy where good ones are increasingly rare birds, this is an example of how to do it right. The supporting cast also is first-rate, if not given a lot of screen time, with romantic interests for Julie including Nicholas Braun as a mentalist hired for Russ' birthday party and a naked, guitar-playing Don Juan named Jackson (Charlie Gillespie). Producers are Covino, Marvin, Johnson, Ro Donnelly, Ryan Heller and Samantha Racanelli. Dakota Johnson Says Studio Bosses Don't Take Risks and ‘It's a Constant Fight,' Recalls Being Shocked at Her Movie Premieres: ‘That Is Not What I Thought We Were Making'

Dakota Johnson is at the Cannes Film Festival for the first time with 'Splitsville,' a dark comedy from 'The Climb' director Michael Angelo Covino that debuts in the festival's Cannes Premiere section. Not only does Johnson star in the film but she also produced it through TeaTime Pictures, the production banner she co-founded six years ago with good friend Ro Donnelly. The two women joined Variety's Angelique Jackson in Cannes for a Kering Women in Talk ahead of their big premiere. 'So much of why I wanted to start a production company and make my own movies is because I want more from this industry,' Johnson said. 'I want more from my experience as an artist. I felt so thirsty for more conversation and more creativity and more collaboration. I found myself as an actor, a few times, showing up to the premiere of a movie to see it the first time and saying, 'Woah. That is not what I thought we were making.' That is such a weird thing to do.' 'The way that we build our sets is really vibe based. Energy based,' Johnson said. 'It's very much a no asshole policy. The other thing is that we really ensure that every person on the crew knows what we are making, so everybody feels a part of it. Working in movies… the hours are long and it's grueling. It's not comfortable. It's not nice. When you feel like you're genuinely invested in something, people are happier and they work better.' Johnson was a huge fan of 'The Climb,' the 2019 dark comedy from writers Covino and Kyle Marvin, and couldn't believe the movie did not find greater success. She signed on to produce 'Splitsville' in order to ensure the duo's next movie remained protected and true to their vision. 'Original ideas from new filmmakers are our deepest passion,' Donnelly said about the goal of TeaTime Pictures, which has also backed films like the Sundance hit 'Cha Cha Real Smooth.' It was on the set of that film where Johnson met the actor Vanessa Burghardt. Johnson revealed she is hoping to make her feature directorial debut with one of Burghardt's scripts. 'In 'Cha Cha Real Smooth,' the girl that plays my daughter… she is an autistic actress and musician. We have been working with her on developing scripts. She has written a script. It's really special. It's about a young woman with autism, and I feel very protective of her and her story and her mind. She is just an unbelievable woman. So that's kind of the thing i just don't think i could allow anyone else to direct it. So we will see.' Johnson later joked: 'I want to direct and I need to grow the fucking balls to do it…. actually no I don't. I'm not going to grow balls and no one can make me.' While TeaTime Pictures continues to grow and hits a new milestone as it gears up to debut a new movie at Cannes, Johnson and Donnelly said getting to this point has not been an easy road. 'It's been very challenging to get people to take us seriously,' Johnson said to much surprise from the audience. 'That was very sad and very lame. I think I have glamorized this industry my whole and have thought it's pure magic. To see behind the curtain in that way was just shitty. It was hard.' 'Some professionals who run studios don't feel the desire to make things that are different or risky or scary or dangerous or raw and real and human and messy,' Johnson added. 'That's also really hard. As an actor, that is what I am craving. As an audience member, that is what I'm craving. It's a constant fight. But we are fighters. We hustle. We really work so hard to tell the stories that we love.' 'Splitsville' is already backed by Neon and is likely to be released in theaters later this year. Dakota Johnson Plans To Direct First Feature From Script By ‘Cha Cha Real Smooth' Actress Vanessa Burghardt

Dakota Johnson plans to direct her first feature, from a script written by Cha Cha Real Smooth actress Vanessa Burghardt. Speaking at the Kering Women in Motion conversation event alongside her TeaTime Pictures producing partner Ro Donnelly on Monday at Cannes, Johnson said: 'The girl that plays my daughter [in Cha Cha Real Smooth], Vanessa Burkhart, she is an autistic actress and musician and brilliant person, and we have been working with her on developing a script. She's written a script, and it's really special, and it's about a young woman with autism. I feel very protective of her and her story in her mind, she's just an unbelievable woman. She admitted to extreme disappointment when that 'proof of concept' was not picked up as a television show, saying, 'It's a short film about queer friends living in Los Angeles and their relationships and their complications and their friendships and their sexuality and their identity, and nobody wanted to f–king make it. And I was like, 'Why? That's such a global conversation, and it should be talked about all the time,' but whatever. So it was a proof of concept that just is sitting there, proofing.' Johnson is at Cannes with the Michael Angelo Covino-directed Splitsville, which she co-produced and in which she stars as a woman in an open relationship who tries to help a male friend recover from a breakup. It will premiere at the French festival on Monday night. During the Kering Women in Motion conversation, Johnson also revealed that she has a 'no a__hole' policy at TeaTime Pictures. 'I love every person that works on the set. And the way that we we build our sets is really vibe-based, really energy-based.' In June she is set to appear in Celine Song's Materialists, in which Johnson's New York matchmaker character is caught between a new love interest (Pedro Pascal) and an old flame (Chris Evans). And next year, Johnson will star in new Colleen Hoover adaptation Verity, directed by Michael Showalter.
