Chaitar Vasava arrest: Congress MLA Anant Patel backs AAP leader, calls for ‘united protest' by tribal communities

The camaraderie between Congress MLA Anant Patel and AAP MLA Chaitar Vasava—both prominent tribal leaders in Gujarat—is well known. Now, following Vasava's arrest by the Narmada police, Patel has come out in support of him, urging tribal organisations and communities across the state to unite and protest. On Saturday, an alleged scuffle between Vasava and BJP leader Sanjay Vasava during a meeting at the taluka panchayat office ended up in the arrest in Gujarat's Narmada district on Saturday. Patel, who represents the Vansda constituency in Navsari, posted a video on social media on Monday, appealing to people to join a protest in solidarity with Dediapada MLA Vasava. In the purported video, Patel said, 'The tribal MLA Chaitarbhai Vasava is popular for taking up the issues of tribal (communities) against the state government and their officials to create pressure on the administration and get justice.' He alleged, 'The Narmada police illegally arrested Chaitar Vasava on Saturday. Just a few days ago, Chaitar Vasava and I had jointly carried out a successful protest against DGVCL officials, who were not giving jobs to tribal and OBC youths who were on the merit list and cleared written and practical exams conducted by DGVCL since January.' Accusing the ruling BJP of using the police for political ends, Patel said, 'The BJP uses the police department as their workers… We oppose the stance taken by the state government. We have decided to organise a protest march called Nyay Yatra in the coming days in support of the tribal MLA, and will gherao the Dediapada police station. We are seeking support from all tribal organisations across Gujarat, including political leaders, to back us in a march against the arrest of Chaitar Vasava. The tribal community has never bowed down and will not do so in the future.' Speaking to The Indian Express, Patel reiterated, 'We have called a meeting of all the leaders of tribal organisations in South Gujarat and Central Gujarat and are planning to carry out a protest in favour of Chaitar Vasava. We are supporting him as a tribal MLA and not as an AAP MLA. We are working on bringing all tribal leaders on a single platform in support of Vasava.'

Gujarat: AAP MLA arrested for allegedly assaulting taluka panchayat president

Ahmedabad: The Narmada police in Gujarat arrested Chaitar Vasava, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA from Dediapada, for allegedly attacking a taluka panchayat president belonging to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during a public meeting in his constituency on Saturday. Arvind Kejriwal, AAP's national convener, claimed the arrest his party's MLA was political.(Representational/PTI) A First Information Report (FIR) was filed against Vasava at Dediapada police station at 6 pm on Saturday, based on a complaint by Sanjay Vasava, president of the Dediapada taluka panchayat. The complainant alleged that Vasava physically attacked him with intent to cause death during the event organised under the Aapno Taluko Vibrant Taluko (ATVT) program, a Gujarat government initiative to discuss local development. He alleged that the MLA threw a mobile phone at him, causing head injuries, threatened him with glass shards, abused the woman president of Sagbara taluka panchayat, insulted people to disturb peace, and threw a glass causing property damage. The incident occurred after Vasava objected to his nominee's exclusion from a committee during the ATVT meeting, as per the FIR. Vasava disagreed with BJP members, including Sanjay Vasava. Authorities imposed Section 144 in Dediapada, prohibiting gatherings of more than four people. The MLA has been charged under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 109 (attempt to murder), Section 79 (insulting the modesty of a woman, 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt) and Section 351(3) (criminal intimidation), among others. The police sought five-days remand for Vasava from a magistrate court in Rajpipla on Sunday but it was turned down. Vasava's bail plea application was also rejected by the same court on Sunday. As a result, he was sent to judicial custody. Vasava is now likely to approach the sessions court in Rajpipla for his bail on Monday. Arvind Kejriwal, AAP's national convener, claimed the arrest was political. 'AAP MLA @Chaitar_Vasava has been arrested by BJP in Gujarat. The BJP is furious after losing to AAP in the Visavadar by-election. If they think that AAP will be scared by such arrests, then this is their biggest mistake,' Kejriwal said on X. 'The people of Gujarat are fed up with BJP's misrule, hooliganism and dictatorship. They will give a befitting reply to the BJP,' he added. There was no immediate reaction from BJP to Kejriwal's charges. In December 2023, Chaitar Vasava was arrested for allegedly threatening forest officers and firing shots in the air while attempting to address a dispute related to the cultivation of forest land by local tribals in Narmada district.

Gujarat AAP MLA Chaitar Vasava arrested in assault case

AAP MLA from Dediapada, Chaitar Vasava, was arrested by Narmada Police in connection with an assault case in Gujarat. The case was registered at Dediapada Police Station based on a complaint by BJP-backed Taluka Panchayat President Sanjay Vasavathe. The incident occurred during a coordination meeting at the Aapno Taluko Vibrant Taluko (Tribal Development Office) in Dediapada, where a heated exchange between the two leaders escalated into a physical altercation. Following the FIR, police took Chaitar Vasava into custody, leading to tensions between his supporters and law enforcement. Supporters of the AAP legislator gathered in large numbers outside the LCB office in Rajpipla, where Vasava was brought post-arrest. In response to the late-night unrest, Section 144 was imposed in Dediapada to prevent unlawful assembly. The Narmada Police appealed to the public to maintain peace, warning that violations of the order would invite legal action. The situation grew tense outside the LCB office as the crowd continued to swell. To manage the situation, police deployed SRP (State Reserve Police) teams at both the Rajpipla LCB office and Dediapada. According to sources, Chaitar Vasava is likely to be produced in court later today. Notably, Chaitar Vasava has recently been in the spotlight for exposing alleged irregularities in the MNREGA (rural employment scheme). His arrest has sparked strong reactions among AAP supporters, some of whom clashed with police when efforts were made to disperse the gathering. He comes from a tribal background and has been actively involved in local issues concerning Adivasi rights, forest land, and the environment. Vasava gained attention during the 2022 Gujarat Assembly elections when he defeated the BJP candidate, marking AAP's inroads into the tribal belts of the state. Known for his fiery speeches and activism, he has been vocal against displacement and forest encroachment policies.

Gujarat AAP MLA arrested for attempted murder

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Chaitar Vasava was arrested late on Saturday (July 5, 2025) night on charges of attempted murder after allegedly assaulting a taluka panchayat functionary during a heated altercation in Dediapada, Narmada district, police confirmed on Sunday (July 6, 2025). The clash erupted on Saturday (July 5, 2025) during a meeting in Vasava's constituency, Dediapada. According to the FIR filed at Dediapada police station, the MLA became enraged after his nominee was overlooked for appointment to the local-level coordination committee, 'Aapno Taluko Vibrant Taluko' (ATVT). According to the FIR filed at Dediapada police station, Mr. Vasava became agitated and verbally abused a woman panchayat president before physically attacking Dediapada taluka panchayat president Sanjay Vasava. The MLA allegedly hurled a mobile phone at him, causing head injuries, and then attempted to strike him with a glass. When the glass shattered, Mr. Vasava reportedly picked up the shards, threatened to kill the complainant, and chased him before he escaped. The FIR also accuses the MLA of damaging office property. Police charged Vasava under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including attempted murder, insulting a woman's modesty, voluntarily causing hurt, criminal intimidation, and property damage. Following the arrest, authorities imposed Section 144 in Dediapada to prevent unrest, restricting public gatherings. AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal condemned the arrest, calling it political vendetta by the BJP after AAP's recent victory in the Visavadar bypoll. In a post on X, Mr. Kejriwal accused the BJP of targeting Mr. Vasava out of frustration and warned that the people of Gujarat would respond to such tactics. 'After losing to AAP in the Visavadar by-election, BJP is rattled. If they think such arrests will scare AAP, it's their biggest mistake. The people of Gujarat are now fed up with BJP's misrule, BJP's hooliganism, and dictatorship, and the people of Gujarat will now give BJP an answer,' his post read. Security remains tight in the area as investigations continue.

MLA Chaitar Vasava's arrest, clear sign of BJP's desperation after defeat in Visavadar: Arvind Kejriwal

New Delhi [India], July 6 (ANI): AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal, Gujarat Prabhari Gopal Rai, Sah-Prabhari Durgesh Pathak, and state president Isudan Gadhvi have condemned the arrest of AAP MLA Chaitar Vasava calling it retribution for Vasava's relentless exposure of BJP's corruption. The AAP pointed out that the BJP first unleashed goons on the MLA, and when he went to file a police complaint, the Gujarat Police--acting under political pressure--booked and arrested him instead. AAP has declared it will not be intimidated by such tactics and vowed to continue exposing BJP's misdeeds before the people of Gujarat. AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal took to 'X' and wrote, 'BJP has arrested AAP MLA Chaitar Vasava in Gujarat. After losing the Visavadar by-election to AAP, the BJP is rattled. If they think such arrests will intimidate AAP, they are making a huge mistake. The people of Gujarat are fed up with BJP's misgovernance, goondaism, and dictatorship. Now, the people will give BJP a fitting reply.' Meanwhile, AAP Gujarat Prabhari Gopal Rai stated on 'X', 'The arrest of AAP MLA Chaitar Vasava by the BJP in Gujarat is shameful. Rattled by their defeat in the Visavadar by-election, the BJP is resorting to such desperate tactics. If they think AAP will be intimidated by this, they are gravely mistaken. The people of Gujarat are fed up with BJP's oppression, goondaism, and dictatorship -- and they will now deliver a strong and decisive reply.' On the other hand, senior AAP leader and Gujarat Sah-Prabhari Durgesh Pathak posted on 'X' stating, 'Whenever BJP is afraid, it brings the police forward. When AAP MLA Chaitar Vasava exposed the corruption of BJP leaders, a panicked BJP immediately pushed the police forward.' 'But remember -- leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party neither fear your dictatorship, nor bow down to your police threats. If you use the police to protect the corrupt, then the people will take to the streets and tear off your mask. Now the public understands your tricks -- we will neither fear, nor bow -- now we will only fight,' he asserted. Meanwhile, Gujarat State President Isudan Gadhvi stated, 'Since the BJP lost the Visavadar election, the party has completely lost its mind. Ever since their defeat, BJP leaders have been orchestrating attacks on our MLAs. Today, Chaitar Vasava had gone to attend a tehsil-level coordination meeting. There, he raised the issue of corruption and questioned the presence of people in the committee who were not officially nominated by the BJP. He exposed how BJP ministers embezzled crores of rupees meant for the poor and tribal community under the MNREGA scheme. He ensured that the minister's sons involved were sent to jail -- and this, BJP has not been able to tolerate.' Highlighting BJP's use of state machinery to silence voices, Isudan Gadhvi added, 'After exposing their corruption, BJP is now getting Chaitar Vasava attacked. When Chaitar Vasava himself went to the police station to file an FIR, not only did the police refuse to register his complaint, but acting on BJP's instructions, they lodged an FIR against him instead -- and even took him into custody. What is going on in Gujarat? Democracy is under full-blown attack.' Calling it an assault on tribal voices, Isudan Gadhvi said, 'This is not just about Chaitar Vasava's arrest. If an elected MLA is being silenced for raising the voice of tribals, it clearly reflects BJP's anti-tribal policies. And if this is the treatment meted out to MLAs, imagine what BJP must be doing to the common people. These are the issues we are going to raise.' (ANI)
