Farah Khan recalls having no set for Katrina Kaif's Sheila Ki Jawani, calls it ‘cheapest song of my life'

Filmmaker and choreographer Farah Khan has choreographed hit tracks like Pehla Nasha, Chaiyya Chaiyya, Ruk Ja O Dil Deewane, and more. In her recent vlog, Farah revealed that Katrina Kaif's Sheila Ki Jawani from Tees Maar Khan was her 'cheapest' song, as she didn't have any set for it. (Also Read: Farah Khan hints at her cook Dilip's exorbitant salary after he demands a hike: 'If I tell you how much he earns…') Farah visited actor Manasi Parekh's house. While talking about her upcoming film Shubhchintak, Manasi shared that a Gujarati film is made on a small budget of ₹5 crore. Farah was shocked to learn this. She then shared, 'When someone tells me that they made their song on a huge budget, it doesn't impress me. I believe that the lesser the budget you have, the better you think. The cheapest song of my life is Sheila Ki Jawani.' Farah's statement surprised actors Manasi and Swapnil. She added, 'We didn't have any set for it. All we had were these 10 dancers. We finished shooting the entire song in just three and a half shifts. It is the cheapest song I have done and the biggest hit of my career. One of the top three-four hits.' The actors then showed a glimpse of their movie to Farah, and she couldn't stop gushing about how different Mansi looked in it. She added, 'It doesn't look like a film made with ₹5 crore.' Sheila Ki Jawani is a popular song from the 2010 Bollywood film Tees Maar Khan, directed by Farah Khan. Sung by Sunidhi Chauhan and Vishal Dadlani, and composed by the music duo Vishal–Shekhar, the song features Katrina Kaif in a glamorous avatar. The song became an instant chartbuster. Meanwhile, Farah was most recently seen as a host on the reality cooking television show Celebrity MasterChef. Judged by chefs Vikas Khanna and Ranveer Brar, the show featured Abhijeet Sawant, Tejasswi Prakash, Archana Gautam, Nikki Tamboli, Gaurav Khanna, and Faisal Shaikh, among others, as participants competing for the title. Gaurav won the show along with a ₹20 lakh cash prize

Farah Khan Says Sheila Ki Jawani With Katrina Kaif Was ‘Low-Budget Masterpiece'

Last Updated: With Farah Khan's sharp choreography and Katrina Kaif's jaw-dropping performance, Sheila Ki Jawani set a benchmark for Bollywood dance numbers. Farah Khan is celebrated for delivering Bollywood hits—from Om Shanti Om to Happy New Year. But beyond her directorial skills, she has choreographed some of the most iconic dance numbers that still rule the dance floors. From the timeless Chaiyya Chaiyya to the high-energy Sheila Ki Jawani, her signature hook steps continue to captivate audiences. Alongside her long and successful journey in Bollywood, Farah Khan is now winning hearts with her YouTube series. In each episode, she visits a celebrity's home, engages in candid conversations, gives a sneak peek into their personal space and shares a fun cooking session. In her latest episode, Farah opened up about Sheila Ki Jawani, calling it one of the biggest hits of her career. She also revealed that the song was, surprisingly, the 'cheapest" she has ever choreographed. Farah shared, 'My cheapest song is Sheila Ki Jawani. If you watch the song, there was no set, just ten dancers and we wrapped up the shoot in three and a half hours. It's the cheapest song I've ever done — and also one of the biggest hits of my career, among my top three or four songs." With upbeat music composed by the Vishal-Shekhar duo and Sunidhi Chauhan's powerful vocals, the song gained instant popularity. And Katrina Kaif's bold screen presence, paired with Farah's sharp choreography, made Sheila Ki Jawani an unforgettable dance number from Tees Maar Khan. Directed by Farah Khan, the comedy film starred Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif in the lead roles. Farah even won the Filmfare Award for Best Choreography for the song. Earlier, in an interview with Zee News, Katrina Kaif had also opened up about her experience with Sheila Ki Jawani. She said, 'It was one of the raunchiest songs I have ever shot." She added, 'It was a learning experience for me. I don't take the song being called an item number as an offence. There is exposure in the song, but it's more about attitude and I was specific about that." Speaking about her character in the film, Katrina said, 'In the movie, Akshay plays the role of a conman and I play his love interest, a wannabe actress called Anya. She signs a B-grade film in which she is called Sheila." With Farah Khan's sharp choreography and Katrina Kaif's jaw-dropping performance, Sheila Ki Jawani set a benchmark for Bollywood dance numbers. Its popularity even prompted comparisons with Munni Badnaam Hui from Dabangg (2010). First Published:

‘Where will Shah Rukh stand': Shilpa Shirodkar recalls being dropped from ‘Chaiyya Chaiyya' song for her weight; why such rejections leave lasting scars

Rejection based on appearance is something many people face in different walks of life — whether in the workplace, on social platforms, or even within personal relationships. But when this rejection is tied to weight, it can leave lasting effects on self-worth and confidence, even years later. Shilpa Shirodkar, once a leading face of Hindi cinema in the 90s, recently recalled being dropped from one of Bollywood's most iconic songs, Chaiyya Chaiyya, reportedly because of her weight. Speaking to Siddharth Kannan earlier, she said, 'She (Farah Khan) just said that we will work some other time because they are looking for someone else. 'You are a little fatter'. Something like this… I don't even remember anymore. I know I missed it because I was fat. I will always feel bad that I didn't get Chaiyya Chaiyya, but God gave me much more, and he is still giving me.' Meanwhile, choreographer and director Farah Khan also addressed the moment, stating on her YouTube channel, 'I came to Shilpa to ask her for 'Chhaiya Chhaiya'. But something must have happened to her because at that time, she was at least 100 kgs. So I thought 'how will she get on the train?' And if she gets on, where will Shah Rukh stand?' When someone is rejected from an opportunity due to their weight, how does it impact their sense of self-worth? Neha Cadabam, Senior Psychologist and Executive Director at Cadabams Hospitals, tells 'Being turned down for an opportunity due to weight can have a lasting impact on an individual's self-worth, particularly in industries where appearance is often emphasized. Such rejections can reinforce harmful societal messages that equate physical appearance with value or capability. Over time, this may contribute to feelings of inadequacy, self-doubt, and even body shame.' View this post on Instagram A post shared by Shilpa Shirodkar Ranjit (@shilpashirodkar73) To cope, she says that it's important to separate one's identity and worth from such experiences. 'Acknowledging the hurt without letting it define one's self-image is crucial. Talking to a therapist can provide a safe space to process these feelings, challenge internalized narratives, and rebuild self-esteem.' Practices like self-compassion, connecting with body-positive communities, and surrounding oneself with affirming relationships can also help shift the focus from appearance to one's skills, values, and individuality. Is it common for people to carry the emotional weight of past rejections for years, and how can they move forward? Cadabam says, 'Yes, it is entirely human to carry the emotional residue of certain rejections, especially when they touch a sensitive nerve like body image or unfulfilled aspirations. These memories often stay with us not just because of the lost opportunity, but because of what they symbolise—feeling unseen, undervalued, or judged unfairly.' Healing doesn't mean forgetting, Cadabam stresses. 'It means allowing space to grieve what was lost, while gradually making peace with it. Therapy, journaling, and creative expression can offer ways to process these emotions.' How can people in positions of power be made more sensitive to how they communicate such decisions? Words from people in positions of authority carry weight, says Cadabam, not just in the decisions they communicate, but in the culture they help create. 'Sensitivity training and open conversations about bias in hiring or casting practices can help decision-makers reflect on how their language affects others. At a broader level, leaders in media and entertainment have a unique opportunity to challenge outdated norms and promote more inclusive representations of beauty and talent.'
