Sabah man arrested for assaulting teen daughter over dispute with ex-wife

KOTA KINABALU: A father has been arrested for allegedly hitting his teenage daughter because of a dispute with his ex-wife, leaving the girl bruised and traumatised. The 42-year-old suspect is said to have hit his 14-year-old daughter, who was under the care of her grandmother in Tawau, with an object on her left ear and body on Monday (July 14). Tawau deputy OCPD Supt Champin Piuh said the girl then contacted her mother, who lives here, to tell her about the incident. The mother lodged a police report here at 5.41pm the same day. Supt Champin said the suspect was arrested about three hours later in the district police headquarters compound. 'The motive is believed to be a disagreement between the suspect and his ex-wife over an accusation made in front of their daughter,' he told the media on Wednesday (July 16). He said police also seized the object believed to have been used during the assault. 'The victim sustained bruises on several parts of her body and has been traumatised by the incident,' he added. Further investigation found that the suspect had two offences on his criminal record for causing loss or damage to property, and fighting in a public place. Supt Champin said one of the offences also resulted in a conviction, but did not disclose which one. 'The assault case is now being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for child abuse, neglect and exposure to harm,' he added. He also reminded parents not to let domestic disputes lead to the abuse of children. 'Any form of physical or emotional abuse towards children can have long-term effects and legal consequences. 'Anyone with information about child abuse cases should report them to the police so that immediate investigation and action can be taken,' he said.

Tawau police arrest woman for extortion after fake massage service scam

TAWAU: Police have arrested a woman suspected of being involved in an extortion case, in which she allegedly offered fake massage services and later threatened to kill a client who attempted to cancel their appointment. The 21-year-old suspect was arrested by a team from the Criminal Investigation Division of the Tawau district police headquarters by the roadside in Kampung Titingan, Jalan Tawau Lama, at 12.25pm yesterday. Tawau deputy district police chief Superintendent Champin Piuh said the arrest followed a police report lodged by an Indonesian man who claimed he was deceived and threatened after dealing with the suspect to obtain a massage in an incident that occurred in Gerik, Perak, last February. He said the 41-year-old victim, who works in Klang, Selangor, was reportedly looking for a masseuse through an online search before contacting an unknown woman via the WhatsApp application. The woman allegedly requested an advance payment of RM100 before arranging a meeting with the victim at a hotel in Gerik. "However, the victim decided to cancel the appointment after becoming suspicious when the woman failed to show up at the agreed location," he said in a media statement issued here last night. Shortly after, the victim received a message from an unknown number threatening to harm or kill him if he failed to pay a 'penalty' of RM500 for cancelling the appointment. Fearing for his safety, the victim transferred the money to the provided bank account, only to later realise he had been scammed. He then lodged a police report. Following an investigation, police successfully traced and arrested the suspect, who is now being investigated under Section 385 of the Penal Code for extortion. Champin said the investigation is ongoing, including efforts to identify whether the suspect is part of a syndicate using similar tactics. "The public is advised not to be easily deceived by suspicious service offers promoted through online platforms," he added.

The suspects were eventually apprehended after police cornered their vehicle during the incident, which took place around 1.45pm on Sunday near the Batu 3 industrial area at Jalan Apas. Tawau deputy police chief Supt Champin Piuh said a team from the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division had been pursuing the suspects as part of Ops Tapis, a drug enforcement operation. The officers had earlier spotted a suspicious four-wheel-drive vehicle and attempted to intercept it. 'As the police attempted to stop the vehicle, the suspects became aggressive, ramming the police car and crashing into several civilian vehicles,' Champin said in a statement posted on the Tawau District Police Facebook yesterday. The suspects fled towards Jalan Apas, continuing to drive recklessly and hitting more vehicles along the route before being arrested. A search of the vehicle uncovered a fabric bag under the handbrake containing two transparent plastic packets of crystalline substances, believed to be syabu (methamphetamine), weighing about 5.13g, with an estimated street value of RM400. Subsequent tests revealed that both suspects, a 25-year-old local man and an 18-year-old foreigner, tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine. The case is being investigated under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Police are now searching for other individuals who may be involved. He said the public can relay information to the Tawau District Police Headquarters or contact the 24-hour hotline at 089-772121 or via the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol app.
