PGA Championship announces Xander Schauffele's Champions Dinner menu. Here's what's for dinner
It's Xander Schauffele's time to host the PGA Championship Champions Dinner, and he's got quite the menu. Schauffele won his first major championship last year at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, beating Bryson DeChambeau with a birdie on the 72nd hole. Now, he gets to host the Champions Dinner at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Tuesday night, with the 2025 PGA Championship getting underway Thursday. Advertisement On Sunday night, the PGA Championship posted Schauffele's menu on social media, and it's packed with notable items. For appetizers, Schauffele is serving smoked goat cheese dates, pickled watermelon, clams casino shooters and steak and bleu cheese crostini. The main course is a wagyu New York strip with a host of sides, including blackened jumbo shrimp. And for dessert, X-man went with a banana split and strawberry shortcake. A bit of everything for the champions who will be in attendance on Tuesday night. This article originally appeared on Golfweek: PGA Championship releases Xander Schauffele's Champions Dinner menu

Quail Hollow Diary: Captains lead by example as Ryder Cup phoney war starts early
For a brief window early Thursday morning, the leaderboard was identical to a promo graphic for September's Ryder Cup. The two names up in lights atop it all were Luke Donald and Keegan Bradley, the respective captains for the Bethpage showdown. They'd stay close as the day wore on. Donald had the honour of hitting the tournament's opening shot at dawn and then turned in a sparkling, bogey-free 67 for an early clubhouse lead. Trying to keep his European counterpart all square, Bradley missed a tiddler for birdie on 17 and then smudged the card with his first bogey on 18. Europe one up, then. Was this a battle before the war? 'If it's tied 14-14, are you talking a playoff?' Donald laughed after his lowest opening round at a Major in 21 years. 'I'll grab the trophy and go back to Europe. 'Keegan is top 20 in the world. He can have one good week out here, win, which he's very capable of, and he's absolutely in the conversation of being a playing captain. I don't think that's quite in my future.' Mickelson's light prep leads to heavy numbers One former champion conspicuous by his absence all week was Phil Mickelson. He may be firmly in his LIV cartoon villain era these days but it's only four years ago that he sensationally won his second Wanamaker at the age of 51. He didn't show for the Champions Dinner and belatedly showed up at 7pm on the tournament eve for a very light one hour of practice. Clearly he could have done with a little more. He signed for an eight-over 79 which included seven bogeys and a hideous triple-bogey eight on the log 7th hole. Perfect mascot finds the fairway…slowly A huge chunk of the playing body of the PGA Tour call Florida home so reptiles on the course are a regular occurrence. But while North Carolina's alligators are well removed from this region, preferring the eastern coastal plains, there was a more fitting visitor on the fairways in the late morning. A snapping turtle was spotted making its way along the short stuff on the back nine. Usually pretty docile they're nonetheless not a creature to creep up on with powerful jaws and a wicked bite. This one felt a perfect mascot for the opening day here where the pace of play was as interminably slow as feared. Shakira and Zaha get Charlotte hips moving Players looking for more pre-round distractions had a few juicy options this week with Shakira kicking off her huge US arena tour in front of 50,000-plus at Charlotte's Bank of America Stadium. Having watched Padraig Harrington's unorthodox exercises on the putting greens, the Dubliner certainly agrees with the Colombian crooner that the hips don't lie. Alas the same downtown stadium was empty on Wednesday night even though there was a full round of Major League Soccer on. The city's team, Charlotte FC, were on the road in Orlando where manager Dean Smith, formerly of Aston Villa and Brentford, saw his team lose 3-1. Charlotte's consolation came from their star man, Wilfried Zaha, who moved here in January.

Quail Hollow Diary: Orange is the new black as Scottie Scheffler sports jailhouse hues
The nature of these gatherings of the great and good of the sport is that storylines which could otherwise be screaming, bold-red headlines drop down to news in brief territory. This week marks one year since the world's No.1 golfer was thrown in a Louisville jail cell for a supposed turning infraction at the gates of Valhalla. The anniversary should arguably be a bigger deal. After all, the lasting image of the 2024 PGA was not Xander Schauffele raising silver but Scottie Scheffler in an orange prison jumpsuit. It's fair to say Scheffler wouldn't be renowned for his edginess but on the eve of his return to the tournament he broke out a burnt orange T-shirt for his Wednesday tune-up. The colour-matching to his mugshot attire was uncanny and surely no mere coincidence. Scottie Scheffler has worn burnt orange twice in the last year. First was a year ago this week at the Louisville Police Department. The second time is today. He's got to be messing with us — claire rogers (@kclairerogers) May 14, 2025 No fashion faux pas as McIlroy and Harrington raise standards Speaking of style trends, Tuesday night's Champions Dinner was a bit of a mixed bag, to say the least. Gathering the past winners at the whitewashed Southern-style clubhouse of Quail Hollow, all columns and Antebellumish verandas, the dress code was evidently not as strict as the Masters feast. Some dreadfully ill-fitting sports coats were on show and Martin Kaymer looked to be modelling a khaki trench-suit jacket. Jason Day brought typical individuality with a velour terracotta jacket paired with jeans. Thankfully, Rory McIlroy and Padraig Harrington tried to raise the standards, in smart, bold blues. Harrington was the only one of the 17 present to have the decency to wear a tie. Quenching the Quail Hollow thirst pricey business It's thirsty weather down in these rolling hills of south Charlotte. The fact that Quail Hollow was once a dairy farm makes sense in terms of four legs being a whole lot more suitable for the place than two. Traipsing up and down the holes calls for regular refreshment. Luckily the PGA continued to expand their Championship+ tickets which start at $76 which allow patrons free unlimited water, soft drinks and coffee at course concession stands. It does not include alcoholic drinks however. Those will set you back a nickel or two: a regular-sized domestic beer (watery Bud Light, basically) costs $14.50 or E13. A larger, fancier beer is north of $19. A strong cocktail? $24.50. We'll stick to waters, thanks. Read More Unburdened by Masters success, Rory McIlroy wants to enjoy the freedom No good Charlotte as Irish credentials fade Charlotte sits comfortably inside the top 20 rankings of American cities by their Irishness, with 8.4% of the population claiming ancestry. That doesn't mean the place is immune to crimes against Irishness though. A local with a Carolina drawl was desperately trying to get Padraig Harrington's attention near the putting green. His lack of success may have been down to one of the most offensive Yank takes on the Dubliner's first name we've heard: 'Hey Paad-rake…Paad-rake!?' The besmirching went beyond the confines of Quail Hollow when the Irish press pack decamped to Legion Brewing, a microbrewery near the media hotel. Their featured pour on Tuesday night: Slainte Nitro Stout, with hints of coffee and marshmallow. Ambassadors have been expelled for less.

Xander Schauffele dishes on PGA Championship champions dinner. What's his gift going to be?
Xander Schauffele dishes on PGA Championship champions dinner. What's his gift going to be? Golfweek has learned that past PGA champions receive a stipend of $3,000 to attend the dinner and are sent a 1099 for tax purposes. PHILADELPHIA – The Masters isn't the only major that has a champions dinner. Didn't know that? Don't feel bad; neither did 2020 PGA Championship winner Collin Morikawa when he was the guy who set the menu and picked up the tab in 2021. When asked if he was aware of this tournament tradition that week at Kiawah Island, Morikawa chuckled and said, 'No. But I'm glad it is.' Xander Schauffele has the honor this year. When asked on Wednesday during his pre-tournament press conference at the Truist Championship to share his menu for next Tuesday night's gathering, he said, 'Didn't go do anything unique. I'd say it was sort of middle of the road, a steak option, a fish option. I wanted everyone to be happy or to be able to eat whatever they'd like. I think the gift is pretty fitting for everyone. I think they'll enjoy it, and if they don't like it, they can re-gift it pretty easily.' So, what exactly is Schauffele gifting to the past PGA champions? A humidor and cigars. "Pretty on brand, I guess," he said with a smile. (Golfweek has learned that past champions also receive a stipend of $3,000 to attend the dinner and are sent a 1099 for tax purposes.) Much like at the more ballyhooed winners-only Champions Dinner held each year on the Tuesday of Masters week at Augusta National, the ticket to admission to Tuesday night's soiree at the PGA Championship, which dates back to 1965, is having hoisted the Wanamaker Trophy. But there is one difference: Spouses and family members of past champions are included. When did the PGA Championship champions dinner start? The PGA's dinner began in 1965 at Laurel Valley Golf Club in Ligonier, Pennsylvania, with the 1964 champ, Bobby Nichols, hosting on short notice. Then-PGA President Warren Cantrell approached Nichols ahead of the 1965 Championship. "I said that I would be honored," recalled Nichols. "I remember asking Warren if there was anything special he needed to say? He said I should just talk about the past year and his win. I asked Warren who was paying for the dinner? Do I pay for it as host? Cantrell said, 'Don't worry, we'll take care of it.' Sam Snead got pranked at first PGA champions dinner "I decided that I would have a little fun with Sam Snead," Nichols continued. "As we reached the close of the evening, I said, 'I want to thank you all for being here with us. It was the highlight of my life to be able to be among you past Champions and a real education to hear your stories of the ups and downs you shared. Before we part, we want to help the PGA by paying for this inaugural dinner. I think one of our past Champions should help us do that. We will be going retroactive to 1942, and that begins with Sam Snead.' At that moment, Snead stood up and yelled, 'B.S.!' and headed for the exit. 'The crowd was laughing hard and we all called for Sam to come back. 'We were just kidding, Sam,' I said. Sam did return to his seat. It was a wonderful evening. The only past Champion I don't recall being there was Ben Hogan. We had Gene Sarazen, Johnny Revolta, Paul Runyan, Denny Shute, Vic Ghezzi and everyone after that through Jack Nicklaus, who won in 1963. I was happy that I could be the first to host a PGA Champions Dinner." And next week, the honor is all Xander Schauffele's.
