Sweltering heat at Indera Mahkota clinic as air-conditioner breaks down again
KUANTAN: Faulty air-conditioning units at the Indera Mahkota Health Clinic have left patients and staff enduring sweltering conditions since last month. Several stand fans have been deployed in the patient waiting area to provide some relief, especially during the current hot weather. Semambu assemblyman Chan Chun Kuang said malfunctioning air-conditioner compressors caused the issue, forcing the clinic to rely entirely on stand fans. "I visited the clinic to inspect the faulty air-conditioning system. I was informed that repair work is expected to be completed by mid-August. The clinic has also requested that the repairs be expedited to minimise inconvenience to patients. For now, the public is encouraged to make appointments through MySejahtera to avoid long waiting times," he said in a Facebook post. Chan also suggested patients bring handheld fans to help cope with the heat while waiting for repairs. This is not the first time the clinic has faced such problems, after the centralised air-conditioning system experienced similar issues in June 2023. At that time, Chan contributed four industrial fans to improve comfort for staff and patients. New Straits Times has reached out to Pahang Health Committee chairman Datuk Razali Kassim on long-term measures to resolve the issue.

MCMC questions influencers over viral chicken bone stunt
The three influencers being questioned at the Iskandar Puteri police headquarters in Johor today. (MCMC pic) PETALING JAYA : The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has recorded statements from three influencers over a viral video showing them handing chicken bones to a homeless man. The video has sparked widespread outrage online. In a statement today, MCMC said the trio were questioned today at the Iskandar Puteri police headquarters in Johor. Police seized three mobile phones and the SIM cards to assist in the investigation. It said the case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities, an offence that provides for a fine of up to RM500,000, up to two years' imprisonment or both if convicted. MCMC previously said it was probing the video and warned that it took a serious view of content that exploited marginalised groups for entertainment. One of the influencers issued an apology yesterday over the video, which showed him and two others giving a packet of rice with chicken bones to a homeless man. He claimed the homeless man had agreed to participate in the video and that the trio later bought him a proper meal with two pieces of fried chicken. The video, which has since been deleted, drew a backlash from netizens and calls for an investigation, including from Semambu assemblyman Chan Chun Kuang. Several NGOs also criticised the act, calling it dehumanising and exploitative. Food4U founder Tony Lian said feeding the needy should come from compassion, not cruelty, while Make It Right Movement CEO Brian Lariche said poverty should never be turned into a social media gimmick.

International space port in Pahang expected to be completed in 3 to 5 years
KUANTAN: The development of the International Space Port in Pahang is expected to be completed as early as the next three to five years, said state Investment, Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation Committee chairman Datuk Mohamad Nizar Mohamad Najib. He said the facility, which will be the first international rocket launch site in Southeast Asia, is expected to create 2,350 job opportunities and generate economic spillover effects, particularly in the tourism and research sectors. 'I was informed that one of the optimal locations for development is along the Equator on the east coast, especially Pahang, and Sabah,' he said during the State Legislative Assembly sitting at Wisma Sri Pahang here today. He was responding to a supplementary question from Chan Chun Kuang (PH-Semambu) on the expected completion timeline and the job creation potential for the project. Mohamad Nizar said the Pahang State Development Corporation (PKNP) signed a Letter of Intent with China Great Wall Industry Corporation and Lestari Angkasa Sdn Bhd on April 15 to establish strategic cooperation in the development of the space technology sector in Malaysia. 'PKNP and Lestari Angkasa Sdn Bhd will also conduct a working visit to Wenchang Space City in Hainan, China, in May as part of a feasibility study and planning phase for the International Space Port project in Pahang,' he said in response to Chan's question on the current status of the project. Meanwhile, he said the state government is currently evaluating two proposals to develop an Aerospace City, covering the areas of Gebeng, Kuantan and Pekan. In December 2023, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang was reported as saying that Pahang and Sabah are among the states shortlisted as potential sites for the rocket launch facility.
