Chandler Jones, a former standout college football wide receiver who played briefly in the National Football League, was killed in a terrible car accident. He was a coach and player for the Canadian Football League's (CFL) Montreal Alouettes. Jones, who starred collegiately at San Jose State University, was killed last Sunday, June 22. Jones was killed last Sunday around 2 a. m. in Los Angeles and he reportedly died from blunt traumatic injuries, according to the medical examiner. Car accident.X. From the report: Officials with the California Highway Patrol said Jones was struck by the driver of a Toyota RAV4 on the eastbound lanes of the 90 Freeway, near the Centinela Avenue off-ramp, around 2 a.m. Sunday, June 22. Jones was pronounced dead at the scene. Jones grew up in LA and was a standout at Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance. He then went on to play college football at San Jose State. He continues to hold the university's record in receptions (248) and touchdown catches (31). He was the only player in the school's history to record at least 50 receptions in each of his four seasons with the Spartans. Advertisement The Montreal Alouettes released a statement. "We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of former assistant defensive backs coach Chandler Jones. He was a passionate and dedicated coach whose professionalism and commitment left a lasting impression on the organization," they said. San Jose State did, too. "It is with great sadness that we share the passing of alum, Chandler Jones '09. Jones was a standout player on Bishop's football team and still holds the record for longest kick-off return (97 yards) and longest fumble recovery (98 yards)," the school said. A pedestrian was struck and killed by a car early Friday morning on a connector road from the southbound 405 Freeway to the westbound 90 Freeway in Culver City. The California Highway Patrol and the Culver City Fire Department responded around 4:30 a.m. to the scene, and the victim was pronounced dead at 4:42 a.m. The transition road was closed as the investigation into the collision continued, slowing morning traffic along the 405 South. According to CNN affiliate KCAL, police say an investigation is underway after Jones was hit by a car at 2 a.m. on Sunday, before being pronounced dead at the scene. CNN Sports has reached out to the California Highway Patrol for comment. After starring at Bishop Montgomery High School, Jones enjoyed a record-breaking college career at San José State between 2010 and 2013. He finished with a program high of 248 receptions and 31 receiving touchdowns, before trying to forge a career in the NFL. He made the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad in 2014, before moving to the Canadian Football League with the Montreal Alouettes. After his playing career, Jones worked as a coach, notably back at San José State and with the Alouettes. 'Our thoughts are with Chandler's family and loved ones as they navigate this incredibly difficult time. We extend our heartfelt condolences and offer them our full support,' said Danny Maciocia, general manager of the Alouettes, in a statement Monday. Meanwhile, the San José State Spartans released a statement on social media saying that Jones would be 'forever in our hearts.' University of Arizona head football coach Brent Brennan, who formerly was the head coach at San José State, also took to social media to pay tribute to Jones.
